I think it's just the fact that theres nothing new to play. Plants vs. Zombies and Limbo are doing well and they're 2D. I know alot of online players who play League of Legends, YoVille, and an endless amounts of puzzle games. Most of those I've talked to enjoyed Gungirl 2, Survivor: The Living Dead, The Block Fairy, and Illuminator. I'll talk to some of the people in my gaming community to see if I can increase downloads here. I don't know how much it will help though considering how few games have been uploaded to the site recently.
The slowness seems familiar... Almost like we forget that it happens every year because we're not sure whether we imagined it being slow before or not.
Yea I would agree. The same thing happened last year in August, which is why I started a competition on the forum here. A few weeks later, slowly, things got back to normal speed.
I'm sad about GOTM though if that is true. It was always a hope to win a GOTW, and then became much harder with the GOTM...and now it may never happen. If nothing else though, it provided a great catologue of games to go through if you wanted to find some good games you may not have played before.
I am also sad about GOTM on it's way out, not good news Is there no way we could make it more automatic so that the admins no longer have to set up polls?
I think some admins are kinda playing a wait and see game if this "thing we are not supposed to talk about blah blah" will become a reality any time soon. Others are just to busy with real life things. I think we will see the site to continue going downhill update wise anyway and with that a further decline in activity, until something changes. I have my own reasons not to do anything about it but thats not worth going into here.
So there you go, positive vibes all around

Haven't really had much actual free time for years (since I made that Chaos Wave thing), and even when I do, I spend it designing a game.

Yeah, every site has its slow months, I would presume.
That, and it would seem that a lot of the veterans are working on massive game projects that would take months, if not years, to finish. Not many of those people are willing to make a smaller game on the side. For precisely that reason, I took a break from my FQ project at the start of this month to work on something else.
Now that I think about... I can't remember if there was ever a time since I returned and uploaded Jade Phoenix that people weren't complaining about a slow TDC. But the topic's definitely not new, that's for sure.
As for the App: Yeah, what did happen to that? <.< It looked pretty awesome. D: And what about the Arcade? That was supposed to be our savior, was it not?
Can we try a console wars competition?
I would like it if you admin guys took my previous attempts as a basis and made it better and stuff.
Loads of people seemed to love the idea before.
The competition insta-fix idea reminds me of that tired old definition of insanity. Doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results.
But that doesn't mean we should not do a competition. On the contrary! The more the merrier. To a degree. Which we haven't reached yet.
What about a different kind of competition? Instead of asking people to make an entire game, perhaps we could have some kind of Concept Contest where the person who invents the best gameplay element, level gimmick, enemy, boss, etc, is the one who wins. In addition, we could have someone sponsor the contest and bring the winner's concept to life in a small game to see how well it works.
For example, say we have a Boss contest. In that case, contestants submit drawings and ideas for boss battles, including the boss's appearance, the layout of the arena, attack patterns, ways of damaging it, and so on. Just something that people could think up on a whim rather than dedicating months of effort towards.
Take a look at HorrendousGames' Humanoid Character Design Compo. It got a fair number of participants from the community, and I think it was due to the ease at which people could create and submit entries. If it had gotten some advertisement on the front page, I'll bet even more people would've jumped in. :3 Kinda makes me wonder if I should have a Monster Design contest for FableQuest. The art style is simple enough. ;
Another idea: VS battles, much like the one from the latest Klikcast episode. Members play one of the more recent game submissions and see who can rack up the highest score, or, in games without scores, who can speed through it in the fastest time. As I've learned in the past, sometimes you need to take a break from making games in order to play a few games.

Hear Hear, a lot of people seems to have Flash game "Make a quick 20 pounds and annoy everyone with adverts" fever or Engine fever. That said I am still designing an engine and it has only been a few or more years...
I like that idea, Strife. And if we did something like that, we could also have a Christmas Compo. We need to have one of those.
I have some little stupid thing I made that we could use for a competition-ish diversion, but I have to wait until I get the yay/nay from the person I made it for before TDC can have it.
Perhaps you could ask CT for any freebies as prizes. Surely they must be willing to spur on the community for the odd copy of MMF, Flash exporter or whatever.
What do points make? Prizes. And everyone loves a "Brucie Bonus"
thats not to say all competitions will fail like the Super awesome team competition. The time limit for that was just too tight given the fact we are humans with lives and such.

Actually, making crap games isn't a bad idea if you want a community. The community was much more active when people were making a lot of simple things, rather than working on epic projects. I've been working on epic projects since KNP, and haven't released any

Given my current financial situation, I would totally jump into a competition if money was involved. And of course, winners could also have the option of donating said money to TDC instead of it's not up their alley.
I think another mini-game competition is in order.
It was easier to make stuff for because there weren't many stipulations on what your game had to be.
