Alright, I have tried over and over to make the best sprites I can but it's not damn happening (though I have one good set I'm saving for something else). I am looking for volunteers to work on a Flash game to be released to Newgrounds (no ad integration, because sorting out the money would be a hassle).

Sorry for the short post but all I really need are examples of people's art, then I'll contact whoever I think fits the game's premise.

So to start it off, give me the best you can on your own interpretation of Cave Story sprites. Mix in whatever else you need.

Thank ya
Wiese

What programs do you use for art?

Normally just the built-in MMF image editor.

mmf built in editor is actually pretty good for making pixel art, but for extra touches you should try to use photoshop, or similar.
I use mmf editor mostly, and painter, esspecially for bigger stuff, photoshop only for animations and effects, and alpha stuffs.
If you want to improve your graphics i recommend buying a tablet pen. preferably wacom.
Or well finding a good artist willing to work with you, which is not easy...
But good luck anyway.

Nonsense. The MMF editor sucks badly. It can't even compete with graphics apps from 15 years ago (not even on pixelart).

It lacks many of the most basic features:
* multiple / non-rectangular selections (and therefore a magic wand tool)
* filters (not even HSL/RGB/BC/etc)
* color replacer tool
* layers
* decent handling of alpha channels
Plus the workspace is very cramped, and the keyboard shortcuts are awkward.

I know people will argue that good artists can make quality pixelart even in MS Paint, but using a decent tool will make it much quicker and easier.

You really should give this a try:
http://www.oldversion.com/download_Paint_Shop_Pro_5.0.html
It has a much better interface than other freeware apps like GIMP or GraphicsGale, but it still has all the features you'll ever need for pixelart (and probably everything else too) - including all those I just listed. Ignore the splash screen - it never expires. btw: It includes a really good gif animator.

Also, a graphics tablet is completely pointless for pixelart.

I wouldn't say that a graphic tablet is pointless for pixelart... it can help quite a lot, and certainly it's much faster than using a mouse.

I disagree. Tablets are great for natural media and vector graphics, but when you're manipulating individual pixels there is no advantage whatsoever to using them (and yes, I do have one).
Anyway, I think we're a bit off topic... Sorry Matt, and good luck finding an artist.

Well put. A different argument might be to say if you had that at your disposal, why would you limit yourself to pushing around individual pixels? There is the aspect of going for a specific style, but unfortunately most people go with pixel art because they think that's the only way to do it.

You also forgot to mention that Photoshop also has an automation feature, which will allow you to perform an action then repeat that option on command or to an entire folder.

For 2D animation, there really isn't anything compared to After Effects, although it's far from perfect, it's the best tool I've used thus far.

@AndyUK Well, meh, I like that style.

It's alright for going off topic guys, but I'm still looking for someone to help me with this.

That's why I said most people, and that was my mistake because I also meant to say that the rest of them go with it for the particular style.

You should probably give a brief summary about your game if you ever plan on getting someone's attention. As an artist, I know I wouldn't want to make a bunch of art for a game that's based on a bad idea. Remember you're trying convince people that your game is worth spending a lot of time and effort on. You are very right about that Yumi.

Though I have the attention of a good artist on deviantart, I'll see if me and him can work together.

Ah, but the idea isn't the best part of a game, ideas are a dime a dozen. It's the execution that really matters. But of course, you're actually 90% right, who the hell wants to work on an idea they don't like? But, of course, that doesn't necessarily make it a bad idea.
