I want to start doing some synth pop style music for my games and for general enjoyment. I have a PSR-292 keyboard, but I would really like a proper synth.
I was wondering if anyone on here has a synth, and what they think of it? I am thinking of an Akai Miniak or a MicroKORG as they are quite small and would sit on my desk nice. I know I could do a soft synth, but I am also after a smallish midi controller so a 2 or 3 octave synth would be ideal 
I am currently leaning towards the microKORG at the moment, even if the Akai do have an extra oscillator. Anyone have any recommnedations?
Also what software do people use? I am thinking of buying Sonar X1 essentials, as my friend uses Sonar, and I was quite impressed. I used to use Evolution Midi years ago, but that was quite basic and I would like to add tracks of real recorded audio too.

You could get a dedicated controller and use softsynths but that's obviously no fun. I've been using a completely awesome Casio CZ for about a year and I'm still getting mileage out of it (with a USB interface for midi and recording; Total expenditure: piss all).
I'm sort of a lifelong Cubase user, OEM version of 4 most recently, but I'm making a serious stab at getting to grips with Reaper which is real good, cheap, no bloat or terrible copy protection (hello Steinberg), blazing fast and stuff.

Cheers, the Casios look nice. I would love a truely analogue Moog but they go for stupid money. There is some fairly ropey Casios on ebay but there is some nice ones on Gumtree - a bit cautious of that though heard a lot of Gumtree horror stories. Reaper looks good, but with Sonar I could exchange projects easy with my friend so thats a big bonus for me.
Could do with a decent USB audio interface as well, thinking of the Alesis IO2 Express. Does everything, guitar, phantom power microphones etc for a decent price.
Seeing as you have been here almost as long as me, any idea what happened to Junkman? He was making music on here years ago...

Cheers guys, the audio interface (midi plus guitar preamps, condenser microphones and line in) I am getting (the alesis mentioned above) comes with Cubase LE so hopefully that will be good enough (I have no idea about Cubase, only ever used Sonar at my friends and Logic at college years ago, I think it was Logic 5 - before Steve Jobbs & Co brought them out and made it Apple only).
I went to the local music shop and had a play on a microKORG. I really like it .
I will wait till the Christmas and the 'Sales' crazyness before going out shopping
