Yes, you can tell the difference, but that's not the point.
The point is that mp3 sounds good enough, and is vastly more convenient to share and carry around - last time I checked, the best portable analogue media player you could buy was a cassette walkman .
It's like a full roast dinner is going to taste better than a microwave meal - everybody knows; nobody cares; so just stop banging on about it, as if it makes you some kind of musical connoisseur.
Moving on...
Most of the stuff I listen to is either a female soloist, or band with a female lead singer. Generally stuff with a little bit of a rock or country/folk edge though, rather than pure pop or RnB. I also tend to like Scandinavian singer-songwriter types, who always seem to have really beautifully clear voices - eg. Lene Marlin, Lisa Miskovsky, Emiliana Torrini, etc.
Beyond that, I don't really have a favourite genre - I just pick and choose from all different kinds of music.
In terms of dance music though, the late '90s were defnitely a golden era - so much amazing trance and happy hardcore (you look at most "classic dance" compilations now, and about half the tunes are from 1998-2000).
Demetori <3. Ignore the background . . . the music is from Touhou games, but Demetori isn't the original composer, they just make awesome versions of songs from a bunch of games etc.
Mainstream (I guess?) 90s rock/punk rock/punk. Not really a genre preference, but I vastly prefer 90s stuff over pretty much anything today. I'll post two videos since I really don't listen to music all that often and I really just prefer a select few bands etc.

Izal (http://www.dooyoo.co.uk/household-products/izal-toilet-paper/) is also considered good enough by some and is also commonly used outside the home. Would I want to use it in my own home (or ever again) ? Hell no! I very rarely listen to music on the move, so I am rather biased haha!
I am no musical connoisseur (by a long shot) but I am an electronics connoisseur/pro/cowboy (take your pick), with my room at my parents being ram packed with audio electronics - and I have designed quite a few of my own amplifiers and built them - my best buddy is using a talk box we built together, he built the box I did the electronics . I guess my main point is people using digital class D et al amplifiers in the home (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Switching_amplifier#Uses). Only reason they exist is because they are cheap to design and build (very power efficient so only a tiny PSU is needed along with hardly any cooling).
I have been tempted to do a little study on cassette, reel to reel, vinyl, MP3, CD with a spectrum analyser / Digital Storage Oscilloscope. Anyway enough technical guff from me.

Especially electronic music, not that much into metal. I like some Riot and Judas Priest though.
The only genre I really dislike is black/death metal, which is the only genre my country is known for.

Roncho if you cannot hear the difference between a youtube vid/MP3 (which usually exhibits terrible compression artefacts especially on symbols as symbols are quite broadband) and CD or a record - I do not know what to say! . I do use an MP3 player in the car sometimes (encoded myself from real albums on CD/Records) but that's about it. I usually listen to music on my hifi whilst working and I have got somewhat accustomed to its quality.
I do love the fact on youtube I can check out or reference pretty much any track I fancy mind!
