Hi guys,
Just wanted to know if you guys know any good options for playing music in MMF. I have ALWAYS used midi, but kinda need to get away from it. What would you say is the best option for 1. Creating a music file, 2. Putting it in MMF?
Like I have heard of ogg files, but I'm not sure how to use them with MFF. Any tipsare appreciated
dont make me divide by zero...

I always used to use midi files too, however for my new game I'm using oggs instead. What I'm doing is creating songs using Mod Plug Tracker (ususally for mod files), then converting them to mp3s. THEN using a free mp3 -> ogg converter I found on the web to make them into oggs.
Oggs are good because like wav files you can embed them into your application, and use the same sound fuctions like pause / resume sample, repeat sample X amount of times, etc.
And what's cool is if you have pre-existing midi files you can open them up with ModPlug tracker, fiddle around with the instruments and arrangements, convert to mp3, then to ogg, then use those to have good-sounding versions of your old stuff.

They are treated exactly the same way as .wav files.

Sweet! Thanks Del Duio I think i'll go with your method. Glad I can convert my midi files aswell, excited just thinking about it lol.

It's cool but be aware that sometimes the imported midi files get a bit screwy with some instruments. For example I've had piano turn into a bass drum and you can imagne how weird that is. The good news is that you can follow the tracker sheet and all the instruments and notes are there, you'd just have to replace them manually after the fact.
This might not happen to you, but wanted to give you a heads up.

I use ModPlug Tracker and there should be an option in the toolbar menu to export to mp3 somewhere. I don't have it on me right now but there IS an option there.

Yep, under the file tab in the menu bar it has all the export methods, but the "Export as MP3" is greyed out
dont make me divide by zero...

Zeph, you probably don't have an mp3 encoder installed. Try grabbing Lame and putting lame_enc.dll in your Modplug directory.
You don't need to get away from midi at all, though, just use a DAW that supports midi natively and get some nice virtual instruments. Learning to write mods is a whole new discipline you can probably live without

I use Modplug tracker to make mods since MMF2 plays them without any extensions.

No no, baaaaaaaaaaad. The way you're doing it you're getting the artifacts of both MP3 and Ogg Vorbis (Vorbis is the actual codec, ogg is the container)
Export to wave, then you can convert it to Ogg Vorbis with either Audacity or foobar2000. Both are free although foobar2000 requires a separate download of the Ogg Vorbis codec.

I'm always concerned with file size, so if I a WAV file is too big I convert it to MP3. I have heard excellent testimonials on OGG files, and I'm strongly considering learning Audacity to make them.
What would you recommend as a suitable sampling rate for sound files? When converting, how much does sampling rate or other variables factor into file conversions? Can you make decent conversions to the OGG file format without a noticeable loss of quality?
