I use Filezilla. Works great.
Make sure you download the client and not the server. They also make a FTP server.

I'm having trouble connecting to the server. This same message repeats over and over
Status: Waiting to retry...
Status: Connecting to 74.81.66.50:2082...
Status: Connection established, waiting for welcome message...
Error: Connection timed out
Error: Could not connect to server

Make sure you specify the correct port.
2082 is your admin panel port. Your host prolly uses port 21 for ftp, or something else. Check your host's documentation.
So the ip should be 74.81.66.50 <-without the colon and port.
And the port should be whatever you have set as your ftp port.

If you use Firefox I recommend FireFTP. http://fireftp.mozdev.org/

Windows Explorer is actually a lot better than any other FTP software I've ever tried.
Just create a shortcut with the target:
C:\Windows\explorer.exe ftp://username:password@url
Then you can browse and drag & drop files, exactly as if it were a normal folder.

I actually recommend sketchys method. Or if you're a linux user, just create a remote server link (basically same as windows explorer method). This is good if you work at a single workstation. I however move from computer to computer, so I have a portable FileZilla installation on a drive that I store all my stuff on. If you are a portable user, I recommend software from PortableApps.com

Yeah that works too. However it's never been reliable for larger files for me. Also it's slower.
