Once upon I time, I grew up with a SNES and N64 but for some reason, didn't play The Legend of Zelda until I got Twilight Princess with my Wii. Twilight Princess made me realise I had been missing out! I have since gone back to play Ocarina of Time (and the 3DS version)and have started playing the NES ones on the Nintendo eShop. I also have played Skyward Sword and have the HD remake of Wind Waker pre-ordered.
While I am working my way towards playing through the back catalogue of Zelda games I missed out on, a sequel to A Link to the Past has been announced for 3DS. Has anyone played the original? Should this be my next endeavour to seek out a copy of and play? (I am possibly thinking of waiting until it is available on the Wii U eShop so I can play it on the GamePad, otherwise it's on the Wii Virtual Console).
I have heard many good thinks about ALttP. I am also yet to play Links Awakening, Oracle of Seasons/ Ages, Majora's Mask and Wind Waker. Do you guys have a classic Zelda you like and think I should prioritize playing?
Wind Waker is a close second to Twilight Princess in my (probably unorthodox) book.
I'm in the extreme minority by not being a huge fan of LTTP, but it's still a great game, and you should play it. I think Minish Cap is my favorite 2D Zelda.
You know, just play all of them. Best games out there.

I've only played the first three, of which "A Link to the Past" is easily the best - but to honest, I always preferred the "Soul Blazer" / "Illusion of Gaia" / "Terranigma" series.
If I had to rank Zelda games, I'd do it like this:
Link's Awakening
Oracle of Ages/Oracle of Seasons
Wind Waker/Majora's Mask
Skyward Sword (even though I haven't finished it)
Spirit Tracks
Phantom Hourglass
Those are games I like. Then there are Zelda games I don't have any real love for, although I'm sure I enjoy them to some extent:
Legend of Zelda
Link to the Past/Ocarina of Time (I only ever get as far as the Ganon battle and then the world takes it from me)
When I say that the world takes Ocarina of Time from me, I mean that the first time I got to the Ganon battle, I either lost the file or had to return the game I borrowed (Gamecube) and the second time I got to Ganon (3DS), I lost the game card.
NES Zelda: Open-endedness, a ton of secrets, many cool tools to use, the first game of its kind. The main attraction for me is just how many different ways you can play this game. Want to try it swordless? Want to grab everything possible? Want to pick up red medicines instead of the heart containers (hint: DON'T), Want to do the dungeons out of order?
Zelda 2: Completely different and the hardest Zelda game by far IMO. Introduced the magic system and the one-and-done XP leveling system no others have taken on since. The combat is the main attraction of Z2 and it's still a blast to play even if you can't get past the 3rd temple.
Link to the Past: Think of an improved NES Zelda and that's this puppy. Now toss in more elaborate dungeons and a dark world element and you have what many people consider the best Zelda game still.
Honorable mention: Orcana of Time. For what it is, it's really good, however I just could never really get into the 3D Zelda games much. Besides Windwaker, which would likely be my #4 choice for the art style alone.
