Not really important, considering how long others have been here, but wanted to note that 10 years ago to this day was when I joined this lovely ol' ghost ship.

Been reminiscing today and wondering if the feeling of change in internet interaction quality is just in my head or individual habits. I want to blame social media for shutting down forum communities and the lust for indie fame for shutting down prolific production of crappy but fun experiments.

A few things:
• When we had so many submissions, it was an honor to be voted the GOTW.
• When administration transparency and spats over language were hot-button issues.
• When adding new features to the site was an exciting, interactive process.
• When we actually sort of made friends and knew (infamous) personalities instead of passively absorbing personal brand marketing and negative comments, just lurking and liking. Is it just me?

Was talking to non-click game developer today, and realized how many known indies had a place here. I blame you all for getting me hooked on game development. <3

I feel like I finally qualify as an oldbie.

Celebration ideas?

I have an idea for celebrating.

We could all go on the Daily Click and post about it on the forums!

EDIT: I started lurking this site in 2005 or so. Also Klik Island, Klik academy, and a few others I can't remember.
You could find all these community sites linked from the main Clickteam site, so I blame them for our death since I don't believe they link to any community sites anymore.

Congrats on oldbie status.

I honestly believe if there were loads of people still active on TDC I'd still be making stuff too. I never realised how important having a community was at the time and now I wish I'd made more stuff.

There's nothing like the like-minded to motivate you to work on stuff. I really sincerely miss those days.

This is probably my favorite website of all time. So much so that I once asked Club if I could buy it from him. He never responded.

Who is still paying to keep the site running?

I honestly expect to navigate to this URL one day and the site be down permanently. Kinda sad. A slow death instead of going out with a bang.

Clickteam own it now, right? Although they have their own website and forums.

You know, I did actually make quite a lot of stuff back then so I shouldn't be totally disappointed. It's just that I always had plans for more. I see Shab using Fusion 2.5 on steam quite often and James Whitehead still does stuff i think. Stratonauts?

What is Shab working on do you know? Last game he submitted is here, something for the iphone: http://www.create-games.com/download.asp?id=8858

And James site is here: http://bossbaddie.co.uk/
Hadn't heard of his new project Stratonauts though, I'll have to see if there are any videos anywhere.

Me and Clayton are still working on projects of course, the ipad/steam version of Splotches, and after that a few other side projects that are on hold until that's finished.

Congratulations on 10 years!

Clickteam's Jeff owns the domain, but I still pay for the cost of the server myself.

Honestly not sure where to go from here, if anyone has any suggestions, though!

I'm still around, as well, just extremely quiet! Rather miss the days of chaos, a million submissions, and team horse.

Set up a market for people to sell their submissions. Stripe is a great payment provider. There is so much potential in this site that the sky is the limit. The weird thing is I was just thinking about this today (hence being here) before reading this forum and then you go and ask the question.

"Indie" is such a large market that it's almost impossible for it to fail if the effort is put into it. If you show the initiative I'll supply technical ability and consultation.

...or you can just let it die slowly.

I think a big change that should be added to the current site is email updates when someone replies to a thread you've commented on. This would increase engagement. Of course have the ability unsubscribe from updates, and even turn the feature off completely.

Bing bang pow!

And I suppose the main reason the site is dying is because the old users are too busy to hang out here anymore, and we aren't gaining any new users since it's no longer linked from Clickteam like it was before. That's how I found it back in the day.

Maybe streamline the site right down to the bare bones, while archiving everything here. Fewer forums, maybe remove the arcade as it's very outdated. Have an articles/reviews page still, but don't allow people to post prior to approval. Definitely make it a responsive design, etc. The problem you have is motivating people to visit and comment - given that this site design is over 15 years old... I think it could do with a modern update

Just prevent comments on forum posts that are more than 2 months old. That should help things a bit.
Dropping the arcade is as easy as removing the link on the top bar I think.

The original site had a responsive design didn't it? Or at least it resized with your browser. The fixed width is annoying tbh.

Having email notifications when people reply to forum posts would be handy.

Just rolled past 11 years for me. It's funny to see what a failure I've become. I was collecting C grades in school at the time I signed up for an account, got into a good enough college in engineering, but unfortunately didn't try, and ended up graduating with a worthless IT degree. I've never had a job for more than a few months, and the jobs I did have involved heavy physical labour where I eventually had to resign due to wear-and-tear injuries. It's clear that I'll never have a career of any sort. Making a (100% free) game and getting eSports ad revenue or community donations is actually my only hope of ever getting out of poverty, aside from the lottery and blackjack.

Also I've had no gf ever.

As for the direction of the site, I've been saying for ten years now that only Clickteam can save it with a 3D program.

Well Christ that's a depressing comment.

May I ask why your IT degree is worthless? I know people in IT who are doing very well. Perhaps you should move to a new city with better IT job opportunities. Either that or go back to school for Computer Science instead, especially if you already have some programming experience.

I wouldn't count on making it big with a game at this point until you have a steady day job.

@markno2
Hey markno2 my life has been very similar to yours in the last 11 years. Right now I'm taking a month or two off to get myself back together again. I am however still trying to get to the point of selling my games. If you're still interested in game development maybe we can work together someday. I'm still in early development when it comes to "Night of the Living Grapes" my current project but I will need help in the near future. If you're interested send me a message.

Urbanmonk, that quote is not depressing at all. I'm far more depressed by having no gf. It's a worthless degree because I didn't get any skills, only "introductions" to programming and databases. It's inferior to computer science and software engineering, so I really have no hope of getting employed.

Carnivorous id, I'm sad to hear about your 11 years, but good to see there's still hope. I'm too lazy to work on my own projects, let alone help others. What do you need help with?

@markno2
All I've been focusing on is getting as many areas drawn as I can. The only thing working is the main characters ability to walk around the level. After I get more of the animations finished I'll be hard at work on a demo. Even though that's a ways off. So, when it comes down to it I'll need help building the game/demo. My coding skills are limited but if all else fails I'm hoping that a decent demo will get the project funded enough to pay for more help.

No hope? Nah bro. I would go back to school for CompSci then if I were you. It's not as difficult as engineering but still pays really well. Unless that's not your thing. You could try to learn a trade instead. I have a buddy of mine who is making good money detailing cars, and another who cuts grass for a living.

As for getting a girlfriend you might meet one going to school, or start hitting the gym, basically anywhere that attracts a lot of people that you could meet. You could try one of those many dating apps perhaps? Instagram/Facebook/ect are also useful. You can meet girls that are friends of your friends that way. Ask your friends if they know anyone. Hit them up on messenger. Make your profile interesting, good pics, ect.

But of course I don't know your exact situation so I'm only commenting from my personal experience.

Gosh 10 years ago to the day I went for a hike over the moors, on the descent I found a dog trapped in an overflow ditch. My phone battery had died so I used my belt (I think) as a makeshift lead and instead of getting the bus home I now had to walk another 2 miles home with the dog. Buses wouldn't let me on with a dog. That was exciting!

UrbanMonk! I'm still making Stratonauts. I took a year off working on stuff to sort out some various aches and pains from working at my desk all day but looking to get back to it soon. In the time off I've made a list of like 5-6 totally viable projects so I reckon I'm going to get those pains back )) lifes changing and all that though. After Big Sky I finally decided to get into property development. I tried working at a 3rd party sony dev studio but much happier doing my own thing. Which is code for I'm annoying to work with

It's so good that this place is still around. I even bought a little netbook so I could play the archive of klik games I gathered over the years. What a place. THE place for freeware development yo.

Whats happened in the mean time. Umm.. I had a lot of fun with games, with publishers. We were invited to E3 once which was wild. At the time I was talking a lot with the VR team at Valve but I thought it best to stick working for myself, and now all my VR contacts there have left! Eep! Peak E3 was going to some Sony boss party at some champagne bar and feeling very out of place. I fell asleep on a settee because it was so hot and busy. But now I'm happy self-releasing small games. It's been like 5 years since I did anything though. I reckon everything is different and scary now.

The producer of our console port abandoned games entirely to work as a policeman! I once posted a picture of a Vita dev kit and got in trouble! The Switch is the best games platform I've ever used!

Still using Fusion or have you moved on to a different development tool? I haven't actually seen the project yet, have any videos/screenshots?

Same here. I have like 2 projects that are 95% done, but I've been too busy to finish that last bit up.

Love your stuff though! Excited to see klikers doing cool things! It's pretty cool that we have a lot of dudes that used to hang out here successful in the game industry.

It's so good that this place is still around. I even bought a little netbook so I could play the archive of klik games I gathered over the years. What a place. THE place for freeware development yo.

Yep! Used to recommend this site to people looking for free games. And they were usually high quality too!

VR is exciting stuff! So far I've had the Oculus DK2, CV1, Vive, and the PSVR. The Vive is hands down the best currently, and with DOOMVR, Fallout 4 VR it's a pretty exciting time to own one! Love VR! Highly recommend.

That's pretty cool, hanging with some of the industry peeps! Not many people can say that they've been invited to E3 as an independent game dev!

The producer of our console port abandoned games entirely to work as a policeman! I once posted a picture of a Vita dev kit and got in trouble! The Switch is the best games platform I've ever used!

Well that's no good! Who would you recommend for porting fusion games to other platforms? Know anyone?
It's a shame the Vita wasn't supported by Sony more. I feel like it would have been fine if they had put more effort into it like Nintendo did with the 3DS. I haven't bought the switch yet, but some of my friends let me try it and it's pretty amazing! I can't justify buying it right now though since I have most of it's games on my Wii U.
