Flanville 2 just assigned numbers to each new user and that was the "floor" that their room was on.
House system, storing their inventory, or anything else that needs to be persistent will need to be stored somewhere. You can store it on the server or store it on the user's machine. Storing locally might be the easiest for you.
To store remotely you will have to build more than just a simple relay server, and I don't recommend tackling that if you don't already have a lot of experience developing networked applications.
