this place sucks but don't tell anyone, it's our little secret, ok?
i hear its as stable as mac (maybe more) and it has all the shiny happy little flashy effects all over the place. cant u even install it on your comp, run windows then restart into linux mode or something??? thats what i heard....anyways the last i checked it was around 900mb download so no thanks...i'll stick with my blue screen errors and illegal operations...
My dad always installs a new version of linux (either RedHat or some other version (can't remember any of them) on his computer every few months. Eventually it does nothing useful so he erases it. Repeat.
Well to say that Linux is gods gift to computers would be to exaggerate.
Its still quite difficult to install (well some versions are) and there is a stackering high number of different releases (Red Hat etc.). So which one to use???
And you can of course kiss most of your applications goodbuy. They dont work. So find some other ones. Or try emulation mode (slow?). Well allright I can get another office program but then what about my 200 Word documents???
Linux is a operating system like any other with excactly the same problems. System craches, bugs etc.
Im not saying its worse than Microsoft Windows ... on the other hand its really not better.
Ive never tried it myself (but do of course know persons who have) because I never saw any apperant advantages.
Both Windows 2000 and Windows Xp appears to be very stable. No more blue screen. So Im not going to change anytime soon...
If you knew, I would have to kill you...

i agree, XP is very stable. any crashes i have are because of third party software. no more blue screens of death, either.
Hmmm, "Stable as Mac." They forced us to use Macs sometimes at college, and 'stable' isn't a word I'd use to describe MacOS. Yeah, and I agree Windows XP is generally quite stable.
1. i have red hat 8.0 (and i plan to get some other too just too see what they're like)
2. the download is 650 * 5 (5 cd's) but it's more than worth it (and you can always order the cd's if you have 56k)
3. >>Cybermaze: how can you say all that bad if you've never tried it?
4. if you say that XP is stable... you haven't seen much outside of Bill Gates world!
5. >>dave_c: partly correct; you can have both windows and linux installed at the same time. All you need is a boot loader (GRUB,LILO or whatever) that allows you to choose which system to boot.
6. linux is nothing like windows or macos, it's a UNIX; a multi-user system with privilege hierarchy, remote login protocols, unique web hosting abilities and so much more!

it's old so don't trust the numbers, but it's the most important things you need to know

Linux is good except it has two huge flaws which cause me not to use it.
1. It is much less user friendly than Windows. Windows XP's user interface is extremely refined, the interface that RedHat uses is not that good.
2. Not enough software support. I can't play games on Linux and I can't use Multimedia Fusion on Linux. I can't even view certain websites properly without IE. Don't get started on emulation, it is way to buggy and slow for my taste.
I would be willing to put up with number 1, but number 2 is a really big flaw in my opinion. XP is plenty stable, maybe not as stable as Linux but it is still very stable (I have only had it freeze up once). For me, I see no good reason to move to Linux. For a business it might make sense because MS charges such high fees per computer.
"3. >>Cybermaze: how can you say all that bad if you've never tried it?"
Please read my post:"Ive never tried it myself (but do of course know persons who have)".
And its people I see as equally good or better at operating a computer than I am.
It depends of course of what you use your computer to do.
But both programs and games are much more available on Windows than Linux. And Im satisfied with the stability I get with both Windows 2000 as well as Xp. Crashes are unheard of. Xp has freezed but it is clearly due to a third party freeware program I use. I can just deactivate it.
did you really expect your windows programs to work under linux???????
games and stuff is not the world of linux....
1. it's illegal to make any money on linux sofware
2. if someone decide to make a piece of software they'll do it just because they think it would be useful, not just to make cash

the only reason to why you dont think there's less software for linux is that you'll never find it in ads or stores

I dont think theres less software to Linux than Windows. I DO think theres less. And the software that IS there is mostly made by amateurs or semiprofessionals.
no i don't... i believe the guys at clickteam think it's a useful piece of software, and it is, BUT if clickteam didn't make any money, they would have to close down; they depend on money, they depend on that the software they make is bought because they need the money to keep going
it is illegal if it's GNU licensed (and everything is)
the world of linux (and any UNIX) is the internet - the real world

linux is the most stable OS there is.. but until I dont have a bunch of software that works for linux right here on my table I wont upgrade my comp to linux.. Aali: is there any software like Jamagic for Linux?
Linux eh...yes...stability is good...I remember the DOS days.
Windows 98 does have issues, but i'm not enough of a computer person to want or need something else...Muggus's two cents!
If it's not broken, why fix it!

linux has a pretty damn flashy style to it overall, its prettier than windows... and lets be honest, who here actually likes bill gates??? if linux could run anything that windows could of course i would use it...but it can't so at the moment windows is BETTER than linux BUT, i reckon in say, 5 or 10 years time...LINUX and its open source idea could possibly overthrow microsoft...think about it...any competition in the past bill gates has just baught out, but he cant buy out linux.
no ones like micro$oft, their money hungry bastards...BRING ON THE FREE OS, FREE OFFICE TOOLS, FREE...other stuff etc etc.
it should be noted tho...i have win98...and i hear xp is 1000 times better...my computer is SHIT...yep
you're all talking like windows can run anything and that makes it superior to linux, but windows can't run anything that's not made for running under windows so they're equal on that point (linux is really better actually cos it can run stuff made for other UNIX:es like BSD)

dave_c_version1:"no ones like micro$oft, their money hungry bastards...BRING ON THE FREE OS, FREE OFFICE TOOLS, FREE...other stuff etc etc."
Sure, lets all work for free in the future!!! No more paying if I want a car, I just ask the car maker for one. And of course I will build houses for free, anyone want a new house???
Let me put it this way: If you walk into a store and grab some random software, their is a 95 percent chance that its for Windows. Even most Linux people dual boot with Windows because they pretty much have too.
listen aali mate, bill gates has enough money to end world hunger for like, 50 years or something and he still feels the need to re-release the same old buggy software with a different name for unfairly high prices...look at microsoft office, isn't that like $300???
Ok, people can sell programs for linux, technically, the program IS their code, so they can copywrite it and sell it, however, if it deals with the main kernel (changing or modifying) then it cannot be sold as the kernel is OPEN SOURCE. Of course, nowadays some companies are not charging for linux but the actual download (I'm looking in your direction Red Hat). While linux does have far fewer programs I do find some to be invaluable, like the one that lets me watch DVD's through my CD-Rom That's a damned useful program, and all the base unix networking commands are also extremely helpful, but now I'm just rambling on so I'll stop.

yeh yeh i was just crapping on but to make a better point of what i was saying... microsoft are pretty much a monopoly in the industry, so how can they justify selling Mircrosoft Publisher!?!?!?!, that program is a disgrace to everything ever, its buggy as hell, laggy and the worst thing of all is that there is nothing u can do in publisher that u cant do in microsoft word...RIP OFF

If you think Word can do the as publisher then you havent looked properly in both programs.
Publisher can do so much more than Word.
Word is for letters, stories etc.
Publisher is for ... well ... publishing.
You can place text and pictures etc. freely on your page and link text frames so the text automatically spans over the text frames. Text can not only be left/right/center aligned. It can also be aligned to fill the with of every line by adjusting the space between letters and words dynamically.
On top of that (and much more) Publisher can produce CMYK plates. Profesional copying is made by applying plates on the paper each with their part of the CMYK colors. Publisher can work with PostScript fonts (profesionals use these) and much much more.
what windows users usually say: "get a real computer!" well my computer is real.. its also 450mhz... and I dont have any money..
What Im trying to say is that if a)"you have a shitty computer" or b)"you use your computer to the limit" you'll start having problems with windows.. it doesnt matter its windows 2000 XP or NT... only then you'll start looking at linux with good eyes.
Well, I play games which do push your computer to the limit and XP works fine. Of course I can't say how well it works on a 450 MHZ computer. I don't think I could stand using a computer that slow on Linux or Windows.
