ok, so I added level loading into the main application.
everything loads fine, but for some reason when I add the tiles
into the background as obstacles, my character falls right
through the tiles...

Tell your character to stop when he collides with the background.

Also, make sure the "Handle background collisions even in invisible playfield" option is checked in Level Setup.

And if you're using TGF, create a backdrop object with Obstacle set to yes, and move this offscreen - it's strange but TGF doesn't detect backdrops if there isn't an obstacle already on the level.

well I obviously added the back drop detection...
I did the handle background collisions even in invisible playfield as well, and it shouldn't be an issue anyways, because there's nothing really outside of the invisible playfield...
I'm also using mmf 1.5
