OMG... how could you people not mention Age of Wonders? Both AoW 1 and 2 were about as good. 1 had a lot of RPG-style gameplay, but 2 was much faster to play multiplayer.

X-Com 1, 2, and 3 were superb at the turn-based gameplay. 3 had the best engine, but the worst atmosphere.

If you want a multiplayer version of X-Com, then a turn-based version of Fallout Tactics works about as well. Personally, I think Fallout Tactics was released just to show off the brand new combat engine, but it still worked well.

Another superb turn-based game is Dominions (2). It's a bit under-rated, but well worth the price. The learning curve is really steep but it's great once you get the hang of it. You might also wanna check out Conquest of Elysium II by the same team.

There's also Titans of Steel: Warring Suns. One of the very best turn-based combat engines I've ever seen, but unfortunately it has nothing except combat. Once you max out your squad, there's little else to keep you from going back.

The best RPG turn-based engine would be the one in Temple of Elemental Evil. It's buggy as hell and pretty lame but the game is the only one besides Baldur's Gate that really brings out the fun in AD&D onto a computer game. What other games can you find that puts in almost every (useful) low-level spell in the AD&D spellbook in a game and has giant frogs that can actually eat you? And it has better special effects than almost every RPG out there. Finally, a fun game where you can dress people up, just like in The Sims .

They are making an UFO 2 which will feature updated graphics (3d) and things that they can show off on fancy new pc's.

Never got the original UFO. I'll probably buy this new one.

What's X-Com 3 called? I didn't know there was one.

X-Com 3 = X-Com: Apocalypse, if I'm not mistaken. You never heard of it??? It's got one of the best battle engines in the X-Com series, and a good base system as well.

Only prob is that you feel like your fighting a bunch of giant termites in a retro 60s world, instead evil scary aliens. There's just absolutely no scare factor, not even with the giant colorful aliens shooting missiles at you.

Disciples II (Anyone else here played it?)
Heroes Of Might And Magic 3
Yugioh! Power Of Chaos (really!)

A note about Yugioh... I haven't seen the series (which everyone says is horrible), but the PC game I have is great. It's pretty close to Magic: The Gathering, but a bit easier and better rules if you like matches that don't last for hours.

Yeah, I've played Disciples II before. It's fun at first, but later on, it just gets repetitive. If you want a good mix of RPG and strategy, I'd go for Dominions II, Conquest of Elysium II, or good ol' Warcraft III.

Medieval: Total War counts as a turn-based game? In that case, it's also one of my choices. Never before have I seen a game with that much realism.

Oh, and I just got UFO Aftermath. It's lighter compared to X-Com, but it's just as fun. Heck, I kinda prefer it to X-Com just because they don't make the humans look so pathetic. The humans actually get fighter planes and "normal" guns instead of having to rely on laser/plasma.
