Yesterday i dug out Grand Theft Auto the original, and it was so much more fun than GTA3 and Vice City in my opinion, and i played GTA3 and VC straight after playing GTA1. Vice Citys fun, but fore me is not up to the original's fun factor, sure it might be btter technologically, but i do not think its as playable.
I also dug out my N64 and my snes and played some games on them, and again i found them more fun than their modern day variants.
Is it just me?, or are all the recent~ish games getting really boring, Splinter Cell, Rainbow 6 3, and Halo i do not find fun IMHO, the last shooters i found fun was TimeSplitters 2 and Serious Sam 2.
Total agreement here... nothing beats classics! Secret of Mana is of course the greatest game of all time.

I do agree with this actually. I never feel motivated to complete a modern game (Playstation and above), but when I had my trusty MegaDrive, Master System and Amiga, I was totally dedicated to try finishing a game. I felt a sense of satisfaction when I did so, but these modern games, I dont feel that satisfaction. Maybe thats why Im not as dedicated, or maybe it's because I've gotten older and started to lose interest in games. Tough call.
Games are becomming to easy. just Take Wind waker for example, Gnondorf was the easiest boss in the whole game. i think they should put more thought into making it more difficult.
So why doesn't everyone just play SNES games? Think of the money you'll save!
Seriously, I don't think there's much credence to this argument. First of all, I know a lot of you grew up with the SNES, so it's got a lot more nostalgic value for you. Yes, it had a lot of great games, but it also had a lot of lousy games, too. Mortal kombat II was a big deal at the time, but if you play it now, it's more or less a joke, much like the more recent additions to the series. Anyone ever play Stunt Race FX? I thought that was pretty cool at the time, but by today's standards, the framerate makes this thing virtually unplayable. And there are a lot of instances like this, where you think a game was so cool, and then you go back and play it, and realize how bad it really is.
Now, sure, the SNES also had games which are still fun to play. I was disappointed by Mario Kart: Double Dash because it was significantly less fun than the SNES original. Sure, it looks a million times better, and technology has allowed the designers to do more with the game. However, that didn't translate into it being more fun, but that doesn't mean old games are necessarily more fun. For example, I think Animal Crossing is a great newer game. I like GTA: VC a lot. A lot of this is a matter of personal preference, but I think there are just as many classic games on my new systems as there were on my Atari 2600, which is to say, not very many.
There are many parts to the problem. So many things need to go right to make a great game: you have to start with a lot of knowledge of what has made other games great, plus the vision to see what features will appeal to people, plus, of course, the talent to do it all. You need time to develop the game, and most games today get rushed to market before they're ready, and console games do so without much capacity for fixing them once problems arise. Also, you need maketing money to bring your product to people's attention. Jagged Alliance 2 was a great game, but most people didn't know about it here in the U.S. just because Sir-Tech didn't get a good publishing deal, and now they're virtually out of business.
Anyway, all I'm saying is that new games aren't so bad. It's just that the bad ones are so fresh in our minds. In ten years, everyone will have forgotten about the Rebel Strikes of the world and say, "Man, do you remember TimeSplitters 2? That game was awesome. I miss shooting monkies in the face."
Defenestrator is actually correct. There were just as many bad games back in the "good old days" as today. In fact, the NES had an EXTREME amount of horribly designed games. Even many of the NES classics would be trashed if released today, simply because game design has improved so much.
When the SNES rolled around, the play control and level design began to improve greatly, so the SNES actually had a much better ratio of good games to bad games than the NES. But still, it had plenty of horrible games. Here are the two REAL reasons why people argue that games today are not "fun anymore".
1. You are getting older. Simple really, when you are younger you are more easily amused. Even when you go back and play the old games you may think they are better than they actually are because of the nostalgic value.
2. It's getting harder and harder to come up with fresh ideas. This is not the game designers faults, obviously. People who have been playing games for awhile want something new but it's getting harder and harder to deliver. You won't find young gamers complaining about "lack of innovation" for obvious reasons.
It has nothing to do with games getting "worse". Kids who grow up on the Gamecube will probably be saying how games are not "fun anymore" ten years from now. They will be bragging about classics such as Metroid Prime and Wind Waker.
99 percent chance that the above post is 100 percent correct.
Most recent games are just a bunch of crap covered up to look nice. Legend of Mana, the Final Fantasy series, Sonic the Hedgehog(Genesis), and the old Super Mario games are awesome.
Maybe we're all just getting too old for this shit!

Defenestrator, i totally disagree with you on the Mortal Kombat 2 thing. i played it yesterday, and i still think that game is kick ass.
anyway back on the subject.
My favourite games ever was the zelda series, i used to play them when i was like 3 or 4. The recent Zelda Wind Waker was no let down for me, it was actually the best game ive played since OOT and the 2d Classics.
also me and my bro who are twp big Mario Kart fans, found Mario Kart Double Dash one of the best in the series.
Here is my opinion: Gameplay isn't getting worse, and isn't getting much better. Gameplay can be bad, and gameplay can be good. Though, that isn't what sells games when they're first released. Crap games release with a big hit, and don't survive very long. Sure your old games may be good, but how many old games are their that you never bought, because you didn't spend that much money on games back then? Those are the crap games. Crap games are released these days, but it a couple of months, you'll forget they even existed.
Copy this to your hard drive. It will be worth alot when I'm famous.

I wanted a game on SNES for about 7 years and finally got (Unirally). It wasn't as expected. Still good though. Well, I played it and played it and now all the memories of it when I used to play it at my friends house have gone.
Games were so much better when we were younger because they simply amused us easier. When we look back and see these fun games we're not remembering the game quality, we're remembering the memories. And if we try to remember them better by playing the game we will realize the games aren't that good and we will just destroy the memory.
We're not gonna be back in primary school at a sleep over playing 4 player Mario Party, Bond, or Mario Kart 64. We're here today studying for a bloody exam that's on tomorrow. Younger kids these have so much fun on all the new systems (X-Box, Game Cube or PS2) and when they get to our age they will look back at the awesome memories.
But remember, some old games will always be bloody brilliant, whether they’re on the TV screen or in our hearts.
I loved Mario 1.
I don't understand where they got the ideas, but it doesn't matter.
Apparently, from a quote from Nintendo, Mario's moustache is only there
so you can see his nose! Thats one question down.

-Above post is ancient and probably irrelevant-
An old account of mine, recently cleared out. It's a blast to the past, the age was marked as 14 when I found it. If you know where to look, you can track me. Au revoir.
I think a real problem with games developers today is they are trying as hard as possible to make their games look sweet. And they do look sweet but they just arent fun. Unreal 2 is a good example of the graphics over gameplay debate as are many other games. I'd rather play the origional Doom than any FPS released in the last year.
A real problem thats bringing on this Graphics over Gameplay debate is the the way developers now work. They used to be a bunch of mates working on a tiny budget and making whatever they wanted. Now we've got Millions of dollars being injected into most games by Publishers who want a specific game. They don't give developers much freedom in what they want to make and thus take a certain amount of inspiration from the finished product.
Graphics too were not as advanced so it wasn't expected of developers to make their games look as superb as is expected now. So they made them fun.
Command & Conquer: Generals vs Red Alert 2
RA2 was good coz it had this soul thing. It was the most well-made game I've ever seen, from installation to the final level(s). But in terms of gameplay, Generals is better.
SWAT 3 vs SWAT 2
I'm still going with SWAT 2. The best police sim I've ever played. SWAT 3 was a crappy, sell-out game.
Dungeon Keeper 2 vs 1
DK 2, anyone who's played both would agree.
Worms 3D vs Worms World Party
Worms 3D had a smaller area to fight over and was FPS-like. But the physics and the cuteness remains the same, so I'd take Worms 3D over WWP (or any of the other Worms titles) any day. Besides, the jetpacks and 3D wind in W3D really helped increase the challenge.
Warcraft 3 vs Warcraft 2
WC3 any day. WC2 inspired all those crappy RTS games out there. It was just 'build quickly and attack', though it's the first of its kind. Heck, there was almost no difference between Human and Orc and using spells was too slow. I can't understand why anyone would like it (besides hype & 'fitting in').
Mortal Kombat: Deadly Alliance vs MK 2
MK 2 was horribly unbalanced, had crappy cut-out graphics, and easy as hell to abuse. DA was actually kinda fun, in a button-mashing way. I'd go for DA any day.
Fallout Tactics vs Fallout 2
Fallout 2 was real buggy and had a poor combat system. Fallout Tactics had the best combat system I've ever seen. Fallout 2 had one of the best RPG gaming I've ever seen. Fallout Tactics had practically none. I'd say it's a tie. Now if only Fallout 3 had the engine and the storyline... (and maybe the same creators as FO2)
Simcity 4 vs Simcity 3000
Hmm... annoyingly taxing 3D graphics. But cities now actually look like cities, instead of the old SC series where people would put houses behind some buildings. I'd heartily agree that SC 4 is the best of the series so far... if your comp has the power for it.

So, to make a long story short, I think it's because game makers today mostly make games for profit, and not for playing. They're missing 'soul'.
Some sequels have obviously been made by people who've never even played the original. They just toss out the game without listening to player's comments. Then they toss out other even crappier games. Yet, they have an army of hardcore fanatics who don't even mind the fact that their games are not even fun anymore and are just plain repetitive (*points at FF*).
But to compare games, yeah, there's about as many good games today as there once were. Have you seen a shelf full of the old Sega Genesis games? I've come across a whole bunch of em in a sale, and I honestly think that there's as much crappiness back then as there is today. It's just that some of you never had the chance to see the old crap.
But since Interplay went public, I don't think we'll be seeing much more "By gamers, for gamers" work anymore. IMHO, Electronic Arts, Sierra and Interplay made the best games ever, but sadly, only EA is keeping to its good old standards (if you put aside Sierra's HL 2).
This is why I hate capitalism.

Blackness confirmed, You have 'SOUL'
Games used to rely on playability and addictiveness, so everyone would go to
the arcade full of money. So now it's cheap thrills all the way.
