presumably because a signature is taken as just that, so that instead of writing your name after every post it is written for you. and it's true that on some forums sigs can get huge, although that's mostly due to images etc which we don't have here.
and if everyone had a picture in their signature long topics would take ages to load. Well the first time you visit or if you've just deleted your temporary internet files.
