The best old-school console RPG is Live A Live for the SNES. It is more original and fun than Final Fantasy ever was. One of the characters (the Ninja) could sneak by real foes and fight the ghosts to level up, or slaughter the people and walk around without anyone to bother you. The Gundam strategy and action games are also really good (Encounters in Space is one of the best action games I've played, and Gather Beat 2 is one of the few strategy games I enjoy that I've beaten fairly). Streets of Rage is one cool beat 'em up (one of the few games with good sound and music on the Genesis, besides Shinobi 3, which also rocks). Deus Ex is also my favorite computer RPG. I've played it longer than any other game I own. It's so much more difficult on my slow computer than on my friend's computer. It's the only FPS-type game I'm good at.
