Dear Daily Clickers!
I have been woundering about a question lately, and I have still not got a good answer. Maybe some of you have one answer.
You see: Along with some other creatures, human have been granted a sense known to us as "hearing". We human has proved this hearing is caused by waves in the air called "sound". So my question is: How can our ancestors at the beginning of life know about these waves so we could have evolved a sense based on it? How could we adapt ourself to something we actually didn't know it was existing?
Please, does anyone know any good answers in this question? In that case, please post it under this thread.

you don't adapt to something because you know about it, you adapt because everything that isn't mutated in favour will just die out, leaving the mutant to reproduce and take over.

It would be hard not to adapt to something which people are bomarded with from every direction. The same could be said about any sense we have, such as sight or smell. Just because the individual doesn't understand the scientific concept doesn't mean they don't recognise it.
Really, it's stuff like this that weakens the theory of evolution. But I guess mentioning stuff like that would start a flame war. If it's any consolation to both sides, I say that Adam and Eve were both monkey-humanoids .
Sound is little more than vibrations in the air. It's quite easy for some creatures to adapt to after a while. I mean, ears are just some sensors that sense how strongly the air is vibrating. If the air around you had been vibrating for millions of years in different patterns, I'm sure someone would have figured out how to tell the difference. Even deaf people can sense air vibrations, though not as well as some others. It's far simpler than some of the other strangeness of evolution/mutation.
The real question is... how did we develop something as complex as sight? I mean, seeing black and white is one thing... but our eyes can tell more than just the intensity of light. It can tell patterns and judge different colors of light and even process stuff like depth and perception. Heck, it even bothers to flip the recieved images automatically.
And what about walking on two feet? Why is it that humans are some of the only creatures who have bothered to try it? Is it because humans have horribly mutated forelegs that don't allow them to walk on them?

I think the theory of evolution is flawed. My brother's gf said a similar thing. If we had such low-intelligence, where did the information for our evolution come from?
We are very complex creatures, so for us to evolve from one-celled organisms seems impossible.
Thing is, there's insufficient data to prove that it's flawed and there's insufficient data to prove that it's real. It's the biggest debate in the scientific community.
Personally, I think the first group of 'true' humans (Adam and Eve) were flawed in the sense that they wanted more and more and couldn't be satisfied with what they have. This endless greed brought down to their descendants... us. And thus, we started an arms race for power, which meant that we either went for knowledge or brute strength. But these days, knowledge beats brute strength, and thus, human's natural lust for power leads us to develop more powerful minds and search for intellect.
If the theory of evolution is true, then we'll gain progressively smarter, especially if we have smart parents. Unfortunately, this is even more a base for racism, and Darwin's theory was a major supporter for fascism.
Besides, my "Endless Greed" theory kinda explains the metaphors in some religious tracts. Thus, I have proven that evolution does not mean that the Creation Theory is fake. It just shows that God 'created' humans by making them flawed from the rest of the animals.
I'm gonna get sooo flamed for this .

There's no reason that creationism and evolution cannot co-exist...
According to the bible, for all you Christians, God created all forms of life on Earth; but if you take a literal interpretation of biblical stories, Noah had to cram two of every species onto a boat. Now, we know that he didn't have the time or the resources to track down every single one (or two) of the billions of species present on the Earth today. Therefore, some sort of evolution had to have occured. There, prooving evolution with religion. Who feels clever? I sure do.
Anyone seen that documentary on Noah's Ark? According to it Noah lived at the bottom of some lake which was dry till it was flooded when the ice (back in the ice age) melted and poured into it. So, fact is, Noah just took two of the species of the creatures that were in his area. I dunno... maybe it made him feel like he was saving the world.

joNickArt- Nikodemus, Neither people nor animals have to understand a sense to be able to use it. Almost all animals have the 5 normal senses and they use them without thinking about it, simply because they have no self-awareness.
Muz, if we forget how/why life began or how/why we got ears, the question about how we can use them is not so difficult to grasp. We receive and interpretate the sound waves as sounds in our mind, now, if we hear a sound and see it leads to death of someone even animals can conclude that that sound is connected to death eg the sound of a predatorous animal like a tiger or whatever. So next time we hear the sound we will run to avoid death. The same can be said about seeing and other senses.
A thing that stroke me. We are by far not the only ones or first one to walk on 2 legs. Many dinosaurs for instance walked only on 2 legs. The same can be said about some lizards and other reptiles who can at times run on only 2 legs for added speed. All birds must be said to walk on 2 legs right? I know most of them dont walk a lot except of course for the ostrich. The kangaroo only use 2 legs for jumping. The purpose of only using 2 lems for transportation are always based upon we use the other 2 lems to something else, we free 2 of our lems from walking so to speak. In the birds case, the other 2 legs became wings which then (for most) became the preferred means of transportation. For dinosaurs and humans it meant we could use the other 2 legs (arms) to other work. Meat eaters could grap a hold of prey, we could use our arms to create objects that could aid us, like tools. The monkeys on the other hand could be said to have 4 arms and no legs, except for some apes like the gorilla. Thats because arms are more suitable when climbing trees.
As to the question about if the world was created or evolution did it. Personally I think there must be some sort of a god, but he may not excactly have created everything and the established religions may not at all be right. As to christianity isnt it puzzling that it was the woman (eva) that was greedy (or dumb) enough to let the snake persuade her to eat an apple from a forbidden tree? Does that not sound (sex) discriminating to you? Why was it not Adam?
i think evolution to an extent. i think the whole "we come from volcanoes" is a very realistic theory. also the whole monkey evolution thingy is a little wrong, id love to believe it but it happened way too fast. or some monkey ate some uranium and evolved quickly lol. see thing about evolution is it happens when its needed; and why did monkies need to evolve? if humans wernt around they would be top dog on earth. i just think there is much more to it than basic "oh why dont we evolve today?" "why yes Ester... lets!"
and why are our brains bigger than needed, at maximum we use 10% of our brains whilst other animals and stuff use 90%?
but back to senses; there are other things out there which we cant detect with our senses like radiation and some chemicals and sounds. youd be saying the same thing about not being able to hear the 'vibrations things make' (sound) but you can feel background radation like a GM Detector can. also you cant see other rays of light and energy other than visible light colours. You cannot see Infrared, or gamma, or X-Rays because you simply dont need too.
I learned that we do not hear by sound waves!!!! We actually have little men in our heads that whisper everything that we hear to us. Now the question of "How do they hear it?" comes to mind and i tell you that doesn't matter. You just remember that there are little people, gremlins if you will, controlling our every move!! OH GOD WE ARE ALL DOOMED!

muz, we walk on 2 feet because the chimps started standing on 2 feet to see over the tall grass, and watch out for predators.
i for one can perfectly accept the evolution theory. it makes perfect sense, provided you do a little background reading, and i'd rather not place the reason for my existance is the hands of some devine power. as far as i'm concerned, it's all one very large set of coincedences.
For me it sounds logical that the first living organism's evolution program was already programmed in their DNA so they from the beginningh knew what they would be when "they grew up". Could that be right?
Hmm... perhaps most people need to do some background reading or something as Pete said. I read the New Scientist every now and then so in a nutshell this is my knowledge:
The Earth is about 5 billion years old (I think). Pretty much as soon as it became habitable, around 4 billion years ago, simple single celled life appeared - bacteria. Question 1 - where did they come from? Then, for 3 billion years, not much happened. Bacteria sat around multiplying and stuff. Suddenly (as far as sudden goes over 3 billion years), multi-celled creatures appeared. This meant certain cells could specialise - before, bacteria had to do everything in one cell. In a multi celled animal a little hair or something could twitch and propel the creature along.
Then, by chance, something like a light sensative cell might mutate. This would only be able to sense if the area is light or dark, but still holds an advantage - if it is dark, e.g. hiding in a cave, then it is safer. The theory of evolution then goes that since light sensing creatures can hide in caves or dark places (remember this is just an example), then more of the light sensative ones survive - blind ones wandering around in the open get eaten. Then another mutation might allow a creature to see rough shapes. Gradually it develops in to something as complex and useful as the eye.
Evolution seems all to make sense to me. The problem of where the ear comes from is a similar story - sensing vibrations, sensing loud and quiet, sensing high and low, simple ears, more advanced ears etc. This is not "weakening the theory of evolution" as Muz said, but it's the very stuff it's made of.
Direct answer: when you are being hunted with a deaf man, you are more likly to run from a noise than said deaf man, thats survival of the fitest in lay-mans for you.
and by the way: pretty much every thing with hearing evolved from a single species... in the same way that everything with wings came from a single species, so its not amazing that so many different creatures have it. you should listen in science lessons.
Muz: the best theory for why we have 2 feet is that some monkeys( well monkey types) mutated the ability and this allowed them many things, the most useful being it taking less energy to walk (dont ask me how that works) which allowed a female monkey type to have more children in her lifetime. plus with hands came the ability to make tools, the one reason we arent extinct.
Teapot: you make it sound like the victorians were single celled organisms, lets do a little math, a single generation is generally about 25 years... maybe more maybe less... who knows. since the common callender started there have been 600 generations. not much has changed there. but since the begining of life? suffice to say its a lot....mamals, sort of started as it were a bit over 65 million years ago, thats 2.6 million generations. i dont have any reference books with an approximate age of terrestrial life but if its taken 65million years to get from rat type things to use, it would have taken *quite* a bit more to get from single cells to all the different things that there are now.
Kirby: dont you just love logic?
Jay: if humans didnt evolve, then you'd possibly still have neanderthals. other than that, my bet is on the rats. they got them shifty eyes...
2: voice box prolly came after hearing, to alert other hearing animals of our species that they are about to get killed (more survival)
joNickArt: MUTATION fool!
Tigs: if your right, then there have been 120 million generations (if 1billion is 1000,000,000 which i guess is what you think of it as, although it should be 1,000,000,000,000)
dont hate me if any of what ive said sounds like im being mean to you, its entirely unintended
Twas brillig, and the slivey toves
Did gyre and gimble in the wabe,
All mimsy were the borogroves,
And the momewraths outgrabe.
I often think like that, seriously! "Hmmm... what if the universe is nothing but a mere dustball in a house on a small planet in a even bigger universe, which is only a mere underwear of a creature who changes his underwear alot, and lives on a sligthly bigger planet in a even larger universe, and so on, and so on...
I've gotta stop thinking. It's bad for my head.
The content above makes absolutely no sense. But I guess you've already figured that out.
The universe itslef exists in a way we either
dont know about or couldnt comprehend.
we can only find things out by finding evidence and then guessing from that evidence.
any evidence on how we came to be would be really hard to find because of the inhospitality of the universe and the size of it.
there is a lot of evidence on earth of how we used to be millions of years ago in fossils but anybody thinking that these fossils of apemen are early humans are only using educated guesses. they could be wrong but we take the best guess as the answer until it is proven wrong.
there are a lot of theories out there but there are so many possibilities as to what humans started out as.
Unfortunatly God, if there is such an entity doesnt appear to be answering our questions or mabye he is but we arent listening?
i just dont know.
