If you've ever played the game Popcorn, you'll know what I mean by adding lots of goodies.
I reckon a really cool idea would be to have 360 degree breakout. Basically all of the blocks are in the middle of the screen and you have a paddle that can travel in a circle (or oval) around the outside.
You may want to keep it to maybe just a semi circle to make it more easy, but either way...it's a interesting twist.

"Say you're hanging from a huge cliff at the top of mt. everest and a guy comes along and says he'll save you, and proceeds to throw religious pamphlets at you while simultaniously giving a sermon." - Dustin G
In my old breakout game there were combo breaks, bosses, shooting down spaceships and other such BS. It also had an "active loss system", where you would lose a life when the ball hit the bottom of the screen, but it would bounce back up. Hmm, lemme se if I can find it, nope, I'll dig on my home computer later to find it.
Good breakout games should have predictable bounces. The ball bounces a particular way depending on where on the paddle it hits, then bounces realistically off other surfaces (angle of reflection = angle of refraction.)
"Omg. Where did they get the idea to not use army guys? Are they taking drugs?" --Tim Schafer on originality in videogames
I know! What you do is, you take the game, get a r0x0r artist, get an indepentent band to make the music, and make a story about seven gems scattered around random worlds. Then, after a year, add a few touches and sell it for money and try to get away with it.
Ok, seriously, a story mode should be something like this;
The fabled Crystal Ball has been stolen by the evil Brickman. Without the crystal ball, the harmony between ball and bat is non-existant. You must go across four realms and collect the four gems of Een-o-wah. When th four gems are brought together, the portal to Brickman's lair opens up, and you must defeat him be r0x0ring his b0x0rs.
How's that? Also, add special quirks like powerups. Like, for instance, the 'light ball' whose sheer light destroys any bricks in its path. Another powerup could be the 'magnetic ball' which stays in line with the bat for some time. There could also be trick powerups like a 'cursed bat' which moves to the right when you press left, etc., and the 'slime bat' which slows down bat movement.
Maybe if you did something like Kirby's Blockball...That was the most original Break out clone I had ever played...
Anyway, if you added bosses, collectibles, cool powerups, bonus games, and a story, I'd play it!
Fine Garbage since 2003.
