Recently Nintendo has been cutting down on Fan Games and has already shut down a few Fan Games based websites, some have managed to get back online while others are still shut down. A petition has already been started to bring back Fan Games and already a shit load of Signatures have been signed, i myself signed it so get in there and sign it: http://www.petitiononline.com/adb142/
WORD UP, P-UNIT!
I can't say I see what's so unreasonable about this. Nintendo owns the rights to their characters and they don't need their name tarnished by half-assed crappy fangames.
The most unreasonable part about it is many people worked on a Fan Game for countless and countless hours and all of the sudden there game that they put so much effort into is now taken down, even there whole website. i dont see anything reasonable in that at all.
Check out: www.oot2d.com one of the actual Good looking fan games, oh wait thats been taken off the web to. If Nintendo does go through with it, who knows maybe the other Big companys will follow and if so even some of the games here at TDC could be taken down Sonic DIY, Pacmanworlds e.t.c
If your smart enough to know how to find and download these fan games, then your easily smart enough to know they are fan games and not created by nintendo itself, so I dont know how thats tarnishing them. I say as long as you aint making profit off them then let them be allowed.

Show me the power child,
I'd like to say,
That I'm down on my knees today,
Gives me the butterflies,
Gives me away,
'Til I'm up on my feet again,
I'm feeling outshined.
hmmm...most fan games are crap, but then again, there's still a few good ones and some joke fangames....Then again, the guy said "P-unit" and "word up" whatever they mean(probably a language spoken by a foreign planet.....what the heck, I'll vote.
Also, if you're good enough to make a DECENT fan game, then why not replace the graphics and tweak the gameplay and actually make a DECENT ORIGINAL game?
@Tigerworks: why don't you change the characters and names in a fan fiction and sell it as an original? Or why not change the subject and sell some original artwork? People make fangames, because they liked the original and want to make a tribute to it, and if they are good at making games they aren't stupid for not making a great original instead of their awsome LoZ: Twilight of Evil game.
I, personally, would go by your advice, Tigerworks, but not everyone is like me. (which is why there are fangames )

I have mixed feelings about this, really. On one hand, it's their right, and anything that gets rid of the bulk of the awful fangames is a good thing. I think fangames stifle creativity, in that someone who is inspired by say Castlevania are more likely to make a fangame that can never live up to Castlevania, rather than a clone that would leave room for some innovation (as opposed to bad copies of features).
On the other hand, there are plenty of good fangames which may now be lost, and without fanmade remakes plenty of older games could dissapear forever.
