I think it's really annoying when downloads don't have screenshots, and/or a working download link. Couldn't it be made somehow so you can't submit stuff without at least 1 screenie and a working link ?
The working link thing would be more or less impossible unless someone actually tested it, but I agree with the screenshot thing. Not necessarily that submissions shouldn't be allowed without one, but maybe the ability for someone other than the author to add screenshots.
yeah.. maybe the link thing could be made so that if an admin spots a download that doesn't work, he warns the owner about it telling him to get the download working, or else get the download removed.
can this tell the difference between a 404 and a file that actually exists ? and what if people post a link to a page that has links to a multifile archive ?

it requires a direct link to the file to work, which people should provide anyway. but it can tell the difference between a file and a 404.
it can be good without screenshots. like theres some new game with no screenies and about 10 people saying "its crap" and its magically got no downloads. but then you do download it and its really a virtual cheque for a nice £100
I can understand why some people don't post their screenshots, mainly because direct linking won't work and you'll get the dreaded red cross box appearing.
But these poor unfortunate souls should at least post a link to a page with screenshots of their game on it.
Remember kiddies, a picture paints 1000 words.
So you either write a 1000 word description of your game, or post some pictures of the game. Both is preferable, but I doubt most will read your boring 1000 word description when you have a screenshot that says the exact thing.

giving the submitters an alternate link seems a good idea.
If they have a website with little space left or a fussy site that doesnt allow direct linking or even one that doesnt allow picture files at all, an alternative seems a good idea.
and explaining to them on the submitting page that screenshots increase downloads would help too.
