Ugh. I tried to use the DirectSound Object in my game, and it makes it run horrifically slow! Rather annoying since I REALLY wanted to use the reverb/echo effect in some parts and not others. Is there anything I can do about this?

Windows sound recorder comes with an option to add those effects in, you just might need to make a couple version of each sound you want to add effects to.

Does changing the "Auto reverb" option affect it?
I had a hard time programming the object, if you go here: http://www.tigerworks.co.uk/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=188&PN=1 and look at the source, you'll see it does no constant processing. It must be DirectX or something. Do you have the latest version of DirectX? (9.0b I think)

Yeah I have the latest version.
I did disable the reverb, I don't want there to be reverb except when needed...

have you tried messing with the Direct X option in application properties...I know it's obvious to try that, but you always overlook the obvious
As a boy, I wanted to be a train. I didn’t realize this was unusual—that other kids played with trains, not as them.

Did you try turning the Auto Reverb option ON?
For some reason, many people also reported it didn't work properly with Auto Reverb off. If you look in the object source again, you'll see that option is a simple matter of a flag in a parameter, which is why I think it's a DirectX bug.
