Project Overview

A remake of one of my early Klick 'n' Play games, Space Commander!

The original game was made back in 1998 by the young games studio Radon Enterprises. Spanning 40 levels, the game was super-tough and super-crudely put together, being one of my earliest ever games for the PC.

This re-imaging will feature more up-to-date gameplay mechanics and an all-round spruce-up!

Long time no see!

Well, it's been a while. Since the last Devlog i've been busy at work involved with the new management restructuring (including a promotion for me - yay!), looking after my gorgeous little girl and moving house. It's been so busy i've had little time for anything else, including work on Space Commander.

This past week though i revisited the code. Having so much time away from the project was beneficial in certain respects. Firstly, i got to see the game more from the viewpoint of someone not involved with it's coding/design (especially since i couldn't remember everything about it!) and i was pleasantly surprised with how much i thought it was cool to play. Saying that though, i felt that it was too difficult for the first chapter and although i was going to make it artificially easier for newer players by adding easier difficulty settings and quicker health refreshment rates, i think it would have taken something away from the gameplay.

So i tweaked it some.

The enemy ships are now easier to destroy, taking less shots from the player to blow them up. This not only makes the games slightly easier but also increases the speed and pace of the game. Since i was originally aiming for the game to play faster, more arcade like but with some story to back it up (cut-scenes, for example) i felt that after the tweaking it made for a better game. It also means that in later levels i can afford to add more ships per wave in later levels, adding to the scale of battles and making the game more exciting to play. Boss ships would no also seem "boss-like" as the gap in strength between their armour and the smaller craft will increase further.

Win-win all round then!
Arcade game!

With the limited amount of time my new daughter allows, i have been focusing my efforts on a small side project - the Space Commander Arcade game!

Interestingly, the Arcade game focuses on the player battling from the Soran's point of view. One benefit of that for Space Commander is that i have had to improve the effects of the Stag fighter itself: before they were lacking in presentation and special effects. As a result of the changes, the Stag fighter now enjoys an evil green engine exhaust and a rather cool flash effect when they fire their primary weapons. Overall, it has been a worthwhile venture!

To see more of the arcade game, i decided to create a Projects page to keep things seperate and this can be found here: http://www.create-games.com/project.asp?view=main&id=1845

PLANET SOR
(4th planet, Sorus System)

Atmosphere:
Methane (53%)
Nitrogen (30%)
Oxygen (16%)
Carbon Monoxide (0.4%)
Water vapour (0.6%)

Discovered in 2145, the planet Sor is the homeworld of the Sorans. The ghostly green hue is due to the atmosphere being high in methane, whilst the terrain is covered in large mountains and trenches. With almost zero water above the planet's surface, the Sorans evolved below ground where large caverns pocket the planet's mantle and house vast lakes of water.

In 2143 the Sorans stumbled upon Earth and, upon underestimating human technology, attempted to invade the planet and set-up a second home. Though driven away, the humans had no idea where the threat had come from until shot-down Soran pilots were captured 2 years later and the information about the Soran homeworld extracted from them.

Now, the planet Sor is seen as the hub of all that threatens the Human race and the surrounding star systems and the threat must be neutralised.
