You also have to look after yourself, get too depressed and you're wino will try and commit suicide, get to smelly and you won't be allowed in certain places (even if you have membership, and may even have you're membership revoked)
You'll get money for doing missions and stuff.
The most rewarding of the missions are the illegal stuff, but they are also the most dangerous as the police patrol the town too and can lock you up for the night (not too bad though, you get fed and washed)
