At first, of course, I was skeptical - how could a GFactory game recreate Metal Gear Solid? Would this just be another pathetic fangame?

As you can tell from the score, the answer is 'Not quite', but the game feels very strange. The presentation is spot on - it imitates Hideo Kojima's 'electronic' style very well.

Once in the game, it's apparent that it's very similar to the 'real' VR Missions. Your objective is to get to a red square 'exit' on the playfield while avoiding guards. Now, this would be all very well, but the engine isn't perfect. Sometimes, guards can see you through walls, or spot you when it's not obvious that they should be able to. This engine would be very difficult to program correctly in GFactory (perhaps aided by the Pathfinder object), and it's certainly beyond my capability, but a game like this really needs a better engine.

The in-game graphics are decent enough, although the top-down style is reminiscent of World Cup Italia '90, for those old enough to remember it.

Other strange things in the game include the way that you can press Space to restart the level at any time, rather than just on the Restart menu, F2 to start a new game has been disabled (I can't think of any good reason for this), and there's a minigame "Shine" provided, which, while well programmed, has nothing to do with the game itself.

It's a challenge trying to hide from the guards, but as I've said the bugs in the engine prevent this game from scoring higher. Also, this might seem like nit-picking, but the tutorial is littered with spelling mistakes. The game is worth downloading to see for yourself, though.
