The Daily Click ::. Downloads ::. Review Review: Pop!
At last, a good game to review. Hasn't happened in a while, and it's good because I'm almost out of good insults. In fact, I ran out ages ago - could you tell? This game certainly gives a good impression from the moment you start it up. There's a Taito-like sequence where the title comes up, and jazzy puzzle game music playing in the background. I'm not entirely sure what happens 20 seconds after that, but it doesn't look as if it's meant to happen. (That got you to download it, didn't it.) Like all good puzzle games, the idea is ludicrously simple. You control a Breakout-like paddle at the bottom of the screen, but this one has a square of four colours in it. Balls of varying hues drop from the ceiling, and your objective is to align the paddle and square by using the arrow keys along with Z and X - which takes a little getting used to - to pop the balls and gain points. The game starts off slowly and speeds up later on, as you might expect. Once you've dropped a certain number of balls - and you lot can stop sniggering at the back - the game is over. Now, the choice of colours in puzzle games (and other games as well, of course, but puzzle games use colour more often) is crucial to me, as I am colour blind. This choice isn't too good, as it includes blue and purple - or to me, maybe blue and maybe some different shade of blue. It might seem picky, this, but a significant number of people are colour blind, so it's not really something that can be ignored. Still, can't please everyone. Simple is always good, but this might just be _too_ simple - the longevity of popping coloured balls isn't incredibly long. Otherwise, it's a well put together little game.
