The Daily Click ::. Downloads ::. Review Review: Objective Escape
Objective Escape sounds like an OK game. "Help a nation-conquering robot to escape!" Alrighty then, I will. Upon running the game, you go straight into a mission start screen. "Mission 1 Eliminate all hostile", it proudly proclaims. That's nice, but how do I do that? What is this game anyway? These questions (and more) will NOT be answered in this lifetime. Thankfully, it's fairly obvious, since it is a platform game. It's still no excuse for leaving out controls, or any kind of introduction whatsoever. I click Continue... ...and I'm in the game. My robot(!) shuffles(!) along the platforms. Improvement No. 1: When you're looking at a human shape at that angle, you will almost always see two legs, but this is purely cosmetic so I don't mind too much. I test out the controls, ready for the 'hostile'. Shift... does nothing? Oh, wait, it works, sometimes. I hold it down and I shoot bullets. Improvement No. 2: Get rid of those Every events and use 'Restrict Actions' instead! Now, what if I need to jump to a higher level in case the enemy spots me? Let's try Control. I'm right - I fly into the air, and sink(!) into a platform. Oh dear... the Platform Movement isn't THAT bad! Improvement No. 3: If you're making a Custom Movement, use Fast Loops or about 8 detectors like Zeb. This bug alone caused a lot of my irritation with this game. All it takes is a little more time (or using one of the many custom platform engines on the Clickteam Forum File Archives) and this game will be a lot better to play. Enemy AI is nothing more than the basic Platform movement with a few extra things, which don't actually work too well. The enemies at the bottom of the screen can't jump onto the top, for example, and on the second and third level the jumping-over-gaps movement looks odd, but it's acceptable. The other two levels are much the same, and that's the problem with this game. It is far too short (not a problem at the moment, since you wouldn't be able to take any more levels ) and there is little that is different. Now for the point-by-point dissection... Presentation: There is no introduction of any kind. You wouldn't know the game's name if it wasn't for the titlebar... the Mission screens and Game Over screens could be much better, too. All they are is a blue background with yellow text, and one or two Windows buttons. There needs to be a lot more decoration. 1/10 Gameplay: There isn't a lot to it, but what is there is buggy and/or easy to fix. The enemy AI is acceptable, it is just the player that needs sorting out. 4/10 Graphics: There aren't a lot of them - since there are only the player and enemy characters, platforms, background and bullet. They vary in quality, also. The background is just a grey scrawl, but the robots are OK. If everything could be drawn in the same style as the robot the graphics rating would be higher. 3/10 Sound and Music: Or simply 'Sound', if you will. There is no music, and the sound is firing the gun. The only reason why it got a point is because it actually had sound in it. Please, don't neglect the sound! Background music wouldn't go amiss, either. 1/10 Lastability: This game is very short, and has little replay value. Solutions: add more levels, add different paths, add secret games and locations. As it is, you'll play it once, maybe twice, and delete it. 3/10 Overall: This is not a terrible game. It can be fixed. However, it takes time, and it doesn't seem like a lot of time has been spent on it. 3/10 Here's hoping that the next game takes into account what I said in the review.
