The Lost Ant 2: Revenge of the Red Army Reviewed by Lazarus 6/10/04 Zimtower (Invader Zim rocks !) made the original 'The Lost Ant' a while back, and he took along time making its sequal. I had high expectations when I saw its name on the downloads list, because, even though Zimtower's graphics were never that great, they were at least fun, and I expected the graphics to have improved since he's been around for a while. But I was sadly disipointed. The graphics were just taken from the orignial. It used the default platform movement. And the Red Ant hot spots were all off. This game also suggests that this is a game about Soviet ants. Presentation: The title screen was just plain blank. I can't say much about the intro screens, either. It was basicly just a gradient backround (or a soild coloured backround) with an ant talking in plain texts (which weren't well written). Notes to the Author: The presentation would be improved if you added a menu! Gameplay: Well, once again, a custom movement is needed! The default movement is so buggy that when I played it, I had to scream and beat myself with the keyboard. But the game itself is pretty fun, and it makes up for the bad engine...for a while. Eventually, I got sort of board with it, because every level was similar. You basicly have to get to point A to point B while collecting lives (there are to many lives everywhere, making it even easier) and fighting bosses. You can't kill the baddies without getting hurt. Notes to the Author: Check out all of the engine examples and tutorials on this site! You need an engine badly!! Also, give your enimies AI, instead of a path movement! Graphics: Akkk! Oh God! Oh God! Please no! The graphics are so basic it scares me. The ants are black (or red) circles mashed together, without depth or shading. The red ant's hotspots are all off, so they jump around on their path movement. The Red Queen Boss is just an enlarged version of the red ants, only with a crown. Also, Zimtower says his sister did a few graphics, and there better then his, but I can't tell the diffrence. All of the graphics look the same. Notes to Author: Add more shading, change the hot spots, and the action points, and I think it would be a heck of a lot better. Sound and Music: The sound and music in TLA2 are taken from the Gfactory midi/sound librarys, excluding a few. Notes to Author If you can't write music, then ask some of the DCer's on the forums to make you some. Lastiblity/Overall: I can't call this lastable. I beat it in under 10 minutes. The Red Queen Boss takes to long to beat, so that makes some people run screaming from the computer. Overall, The Lost Ant 2 looks like it was made by someone really young, but it's fun, and I still think its worth a download. Look out for Lost Ant 3, hope its better.
