The Daily Click ::. Downloads ::. Review Review: Coal Demo
Coal is still in the works, so in the meantime there's only this demo to play. This demo, however, is awesome. The menu is pretty basic- it's basically composed of 2 buttons that say "Load" and "New game". I would asume this is just a place holder for the real menu once the game is completed. As of the demo menu, don't let it fool you- this game is definitely more than meets the eye. The gameplay sounds simple- you can Double jump, wall slide, walk around, and collect coins and keys. But if you're think easy, you're wrong. With alot of strategy involved, Coal puts up a fierce challenge to anyone who dares to play it. You must avoid Guns, Patrol guards, Mines, and Spikes while trying to get all of the keys to advance to the next level. This is particularly a pain, but through all frustration, Coal is as addicting as it is hard, with maybe only 1 or 2 ways to complete each level. While I was more focused on the game than I was the graphics, to put it simply, the graphics palette is monochrome- black and white, with proper usage of alpha channels. I'm not saying this is a bad thing, because, in fact, it really suits the name and the game. As for spriting, every sprite looked like it was intended for one particular game, Instead of a "Prefab graphics meets Ripped sprites" kind of ordeal. In other words, the graphics are excellent. Now the music is something that I can relate to. A catchy, techno beat that, in my opinion, doesn't get old even after 20 loops. As for the sounds, they paired with the game very well indeed. I found it entertaining to hear those guards scream as they caught fire. XD (Sorry if that sounds cruel, but really.) As this is only a demo, it doesn't last very long, and I just wish there was more levels to play. But concerning you'll be dying more than 50 throughout it, it'll be quite a while before you complete it. I would say the full game would take about a day or two to complete. Its mind bending challenges, its awesome graphics, and not to mention its catchy beat, for a demo, Coal is absolutly amazing. As a matter of fact, I've played through the demo three times now. In my opinion, this game is brilliant.
