Play as Scurvy Sanchez again, in the demo of the third Scurvy Sanchez game.

In a storm, Sanchez's ship hits ground, and he's thrown into the forests of Isle Reinal. This demo features:

One level, Leafy Labyrinth, with 5 coins to collect
Sweet scrolling Mode 7 backgrounds
10 Save files, including date of last save, although that's kinda redundant considering there's only one level
Map screen, also redundant for the above reason, but it's pretty
Captain mode, with increased difficulty
Record yourself playing, and let the comp play back (not 100%)
Original graphics by me and Nothingok
Original tunes by Dave Matthews
Heartshaped healthcounter, ok now I'm getting a little desperate so I'll stop there lol

The game over screen contains some flashing colors, so avoid it if you're sensitive to that kinda stuff.

A great thanks to Phizzy for his help

So what you're basically saying is, you better be a decent player or you'll end up with a siezure? =P Ok, downloading now...

I don't think the flashing is too bad, it's just a precaution. And please comment on what you think =)

hmmm... im not sure, i liked the presentation, 3d menu effects etc but not sure why it moved so slow, whether it was because i had the settings high i dont know.

Posted by Phredreeke 17th April, 2005

well, the initial setting (anims on, detail 4) works fine on my 1.6 ghz comp. if it's slow, then try turning off anims or setting detail level higher (read the textfile for more info).

yay!

Posted by DaVince 17th April, 2005

Augh! The slowiness for unneccesary Mode7 effects! Only use them when neccesary, because they are ugly in the levels!

Posted by axel 17th April, 2005

slooooooow mooootttiooooonnnnnnnnn!!!!!!!! you should do a lo-res mode for those who don't have as good PCs :P

Posted by Phredreeke 17th April, 2005

I did! Just turn off animations in the options menu :P

Posted by Phredreeke 17th April, 2005

People, before complaining that it runs too slow, read the text file!

It lagged quite a bit. I think it's because of the Mode7 effects. I don't think Mode7 is hardware accelerated. Can't be my pc, I've got a AMD 64 3200+ and a Geforce 6600GT. My tip is, spend more time on the backgrounds, because this is just plain ugly. I recommend you make tree's of different size and use paralax scrolling on them. Good luck on the full version of the game!

Yeah. I agree!

Posted by AsparagusTrevor 17th April, 2005

Really doesn't need the Mode7 stuff ingame, it doesn't look good and it's perspective is wrong anyway, simple parralax would be fine. I couldn't really tell anything from the game itself, even when I had everything turned down the screen looked like it was vibrating. I'm sure it should be an enjoyable game behind the major lag problem, the other Scurvy Sanchez games were fun.

Posted by clwe 17th April, 2005

Right. Even after dropping the quality to minimum and turning animations off, there was still significant lag. I also had the screen vibrating on me - maybe because it was lagging every few frames. I couldn't really get a good feel of the game because of all the slowdown. The mode 7 object is definitely what's causing the problem - at larger sizes, even the most fearsome PC tends to wither =P

I havent read any other comments okay? The graphics are good and colourful and its nice to see you've used the 'mode 7' object to try and add something to the game, however this causes more problems though. As with the first game the engine is a little basic and the bees are sometimes impossible to avoid, can you even kill them? It is very jerky too which did my head in whilst playing, the background moves with the character movement rather than the scrolling so it dont look right. I think you have some work to do if you want this to become better than scurvy sanchez 2 was. Mode 7 may not be right for this game.

Good thing you have 25 health then, eh? Try different values, remember low value means more detail. When using high values on my 1.6 ghz comp, the screen appears to vibrate. When using very low (1) values, it lags. Is there anyone who liked the scrolling? What about the seisure inducing game over screen?

BTW, anyone wanna join the team?

Posted by axel 18th April, 2005

sorry about that phedreeke, i really should pay more attention :P But some instructions would be great, what r u supposed to do?? where are you and what are those Sanchez coins lying around??

Posted by Phredreeke 18th April, 2005

The coins are to buy power ups. There are none yet though XP Regarding Sanchez's quest on Isle Reinal... I don't wanna spoil too much, but... SERGEI'S BACK! XP

I think also, you should get rid of the Mode7 background. Even on the highest setting in options, the game runs fairly sluggishly. The engines quite good :)

Posted by axel 18th April, 2005

yea, coz it really doesn't look that good anyway. It just messes up the gameplay.

Posted by AndyUK 18th April, 2005

i fell through the floor after jumping one time. The low detail does seem really jerky. Dunno why.

Posted by axel 19th April, 2005

hmm...Sometimes you can't see if it's a wall in front of you, or if you can walk through it... :P

Posted by Phredreeke 19th April, 2005

heh heh heh... I hid a coin that way ;)

When I have problems NO ONE CARES http://create-games.com/forum_post.asp?id=105176

Posted by AsparagusTrevor 19th April, 2005

Well we're saying if you use the Mode 7 effects nobody's gonna want to play a highly sluggish game, but it's up to you whether you keep them in or not. It's gonna alienate a lot of people, seeing my PC for example can run Doom 3 in high settings but can't run a simple platform game like this, I doubt a lot of people have a powerful enough PC to run this at a decent frame-rate. Like I say, it's up to you. Regarding your DirectSound problem, I don't see why people should have to warn about the DirectSound thing because you have a problem with it, I reckon you're probably the only one and people actually did give suggestions how you could sort it, so there.

Posted by Phredreeke 20th April, 2005

Nah... I was just in a random fit and since apparantly no one's comp, except me and Phizzy, can run it, the mode 7 fx is likely to go. I'd like it if people posted what detail value they used though. and if they tried anims off

Posted by Phredreeke 20th April, 2005

Mode 7 backgrounds goes bye bye! (the intro and menu mode 7 fx is staying) And I'm adding a custom pause

Here's a pic of the new background http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y55/Phredreeke/newbkg.png

Made a KA devlog entry: http://klikacademy.com/viewdevlog.php?id=692

Posted by AsparagusTrevor 20th April, 2005

Looks much better. Is that backdrop still parallax?

Posted by Phredreeke 21st April, 2005

It's parallax. I'll start working on the beach level when I get home. (but before, I should add the sword! I knew I forgot something)

Posted by KevinHaag 22nd April, 2005

This demo kind of sucked. Keep at it though... You should be able to make it better if you work at it harder.

Posted by Phredreeke 28th April, 2005

A new demo will be coming soon (with new mode7-less parallax backgrounds)
