One thing I just have to keep doing is highscore-driven mini-games. Climbing Clive is the newest game in that line-up.

The idea couldn't be any simpler: jump over bad guys and...well, that's pretty much it! Place platforms onto play area so that you are able to climb over the "rascals" rolling from the right side of the screen.

To make it a bit more complicated, each level has unique conditions that you need to be aware of and learn to master: gravity, jump strenght, rascal speed, rascal size, Clive's speed, platform size and amount, among others, can change drastically between levels. Each level consists of 3-20 rascals, and once they all have been cleared, the level is completed. It starts very easy but gets harder all the time, and the later levels will already require quite good clicking reactions..

Controls
W-A-S-D for moving around and jumping
Mouse for dropping platforms
Space for destroying all dropped platforms
Backspace for showing/hiding stats and level information

The game features also stunning accouncing by jneumann1!

I especially like how I'm just "The announcer guy". That makes me feel McSpecial.

Fun concept. Music was good (was it original?) and the announcements upon clearing a level were funny, reminded me of crazy taxi or cheesy engrish phrases from the 16 bit arcade days. The movement seemed a little buggy. It was especially evident when you had the very low jump because since he only jumped about 10 pixels if the movement was off by 1 pixel it created a problem where if I was on the edge of a platform I couldn't jump or move. The realistic backdrops with cartoony characters reminded me of super buster bros. Also the giant rollin guys were creative and the presentation was really good. With a little polishing it'd be amazing.

@OldManClayton, try to re-download, it should work now.

@JustinC, thanks for the comments. Music is original, though I have used it in one previous project. I try to improve the movement to address the issue you experienced.

Thanks. 4781 is a pretty nice score! Let's see who beats it first...

The scores can be checked from the game or from web here: http://www.mjkgames.com/smf/index.php?page=scoresclive1

Amazing how you manage to squeeze out so much juice from such a simple concept.

The platform engine could have been a little more user friendly. For example it could help the player's sprite to get onto platforms in situations were it gets stuck on the side and another jump is required to get on top. The levels looks a little bit rough too...

Otherwise; your use of sfx is brilliant, and I could imagine that this game, as a whole, would have become popular as a flash game.

Which means you should Java-fy it and put it on arcade sites!

Posted by MJK 13th January, 2009

That's a good idea, maybe I'll do some lite Java-version out of this.

Hey John, check the "options" and make sure you haven't changed the score submission settings...One reason might also be that the server has been down at the exact moment when the game tried to submit your score, so..better luck next time
