He was an embarrassment to Australia. But he was also a hero. He has saved the lives of countless cameramen who would've fallen into crocodile-ridden swamps otherwise and he's also helped crocodiles give birth. And for that.. he shall always be remembered.

I'm from Australia and I first heard about it this afternoon during school, at about... 3pm. One of the teachers came into our Geo class, holding her laptop, and started to talk about this email that had been going around the school network - Steve Irwin had died in a freak accident. I'm amazed at the power of the internet\television\radio\phone as a means of communicating information. This event only happened during the morning.
To me, being Australian, it doesn't affect me directly all that much. Sure it's sad, as any death is; in our country he was looked upon as almost a joke, however nobody could have wished for this. I think he was more important to people in America, and I even heard that he was better known over there than John Howard. He will still be missed by me, not to mention he had a wife and two kids.
Didn't really believe it when I first saw it. I'm not really that surprised. There was one episode where a spitting cobra spit venom on him, he wore goggles to protect his eyes, but wiped his eyes against his shirt, which had venom spit on it. I guess after seeing him poke crocodiles and other creatures, it's a miracle he lasted as long as he did and I guess he misjudged the range of that stinger when filming the stingray. RIP.

Never watched him ever. It's a sad thought that a guy died. Lots of people die everyday though, and I had no connection to Steve Irwin so it doesn't really affect me.
What's really weird is that my 4 yr old daughter went to the DVD rack the other day and pulled out Croc Hunter Collision Course to watch. We hadn't watched that one in 2 or 3 years. Then this happens today, it's really sad.
He may have been viewed as a joke in Aus, but I think he kept up his persona knowing that he was seen as a lovable goofball who tempted death on a regular basis. I feel the most for his wife and two little kids. I know personally my family and I enjoyed his shows many times.
Oh, and to think that he wasn't even in his element too. Nobody would stand a chance against a ray's tailwhip while underwater. At least on land he could've had a shot at avoiding a lunging snake.

Lol yeah, I saw this before going to school this morning, and his wikipedia page, and all pages related to sting rays had already been edited. I'm a wikipedia idiot
