Those genres used to have a purpose in the old days (old days = before the retarded thumbs system that has been killing the community since). You clicked on them for a top list of that genre. Now it's just one big top list with shit games that will never be knocked off by new, good ones.
You wouldn't even need sub categories Shab. It would simplify everything to group all like games into a single category. For example, both Lolo and Tetris are puzzle games, but completely different. It wouldn't be way out there to put both on the "puzzle games" list. It's not necessary to say that Lolo is a top-down game and Tetris isn't. Simon's Quest and Zelda are both adventure games but couldn't be more different than each other. Throw them both on the adventure list! Who cares if one's a platformer and the other's not?
I mean you COULD have sub categories, but all that'd do is make a lot more work for you guys and muddy it up with too many lists. I'd rather see 100 games sorted in 10 categories of 10 games each than 100 games sorted out in 20 categories of 5 games each.

DXF Games, coming next: Hasslevania 2- This Space for Rent!
yes, but lots of times I wanted to DL a Verticle shooter (Raiden Style) and not a horizontal one (Gradius). Same goes for action, what if I didn't want a platformer in there?
Hmm.. here's what I think:
Abandonware/Demo/Engine/Tutorial
Action/Arcade
Adventure
Application (+ Miscellaneous?)
Bat and Ball/Pinball
Beat 'Em Up
Racing
Platform
Puzzle
Strategy
Retro/Shmup
Role Playing Game (RPG)
Sport
I'm not so sure about retro is a genre, but if you made a pacman or tetris game, where else would it be? IMHO, Platform should be it's own category, especially since there's so many games that are no more than platformers (e.g. Eternal Daughter, Mario, Sonic). You know, the type of game where there's no real quest or so, you just jump around and 'fight' things. If you feel that your game is more of say.. a RPG with a platformer engine, then you can pick it as RPG instead.
Actually, I thought of sub-categories too, but I thought that we'd just end up adding more redundant sub-cats later on to cover what we missed earlier. In the end, we'd end up with the same mess.

well, a few more people thought like i did then i thought. But, seriously, the downloads do need an overhaul. Some of the links (especially tutorials) don't work anymore! And some of the double catagories should be condensed. I agree with most what everybody else has said.
All platforming problems can be mostly solved here:

I think that's what admins do. That's also what the Alert Admin button is for. If everyone pressed that button whenever there's a broken link, there wouldn't be any broken links

Actually, they're more for something you'd send a quick message to an admin about. Half of them are from people whining about others voting thumbs down their games. I think little things like broken links and inappropriate language are worth reporting.
