baka means stupid/idiotic. urusai means noisy. gaijin is just a shortened/slang (albeit widely-used) version of gaikokujin which literally means "outside country person". I doubt you'd ever hear that line from a Japanese person, though. Unless you made them listen to ICQ_startup_horn.wav for a week, or something.
A lot of people are interested in Japan, anime, culture, etc. I'm interested to see how many of them are also interested in learning the language.

Yes, speaking is hard without a conversation partner. Skype is an option.
As far as the symbols go, you could practice them on your own. Try writing your name in katakana, then your friends' names.
