Hmm.. thinking about all the talk about TDC... what is The Daily Click? And more importantly, what should it be?
I've always seen it as a newbie launching place. From everything that seems to have occurred, from every new feature we're getting and the new visitors that come to the site, I think that's the right word for it. I think that's why it's really outlasted all the other klik sites. There's always enough newbies to replace the oldbies, fresh new faces to replace the grumpy old men like Radix and Hayo (no offense)
I think it is time, though, for bigger sites to exist. Those sites can't just go "We're the opposite of TDC"; that's failed too many times. There has to be something different - something for the hardcore game maker, some proper "klik rating board", something else that has a roofle den, where the denizens can piont and laugh at TDC. TDC can't really do what it's not meant to do, but I'm sure a lot of people could.
Gamebuilder and Toastface look like good startups, but both need something new that TDC don't have. As it is, people aren't going to Toastface because it's little more than a public blog. GameBuilder is a good site, but it doesn't have enough activity or enough new features. 1500 GBPs is a fricking lot of money, but strangely enough, not that many people are entering.
So, anyone have any suggestions for this site or any other upcoming sites? I'd like to see a site handle a klik awards ceremony every year. That would be fun, and not much work, since you only need to do it once a year
Disclaimer: Any sarcasm in my posts will not be mentioned as that would ruin the purpose. It is assumed that the reader is intelligent enough to tell the difference between what is sarcasm and what is not.
if we get more 3 or 4 people, we could do this. actually it's your idea i could buy the web space and the domain, someone could code a cool site, and than we keep going with the administration.

"GameBuilder is a good site, but it doesn't have enough activity or enough new features"
Perhaps because it only opened a couple of months ago? And GBP on Gamebuilder are gamebuilder points, only the 1st place wins money. If TDC is going to improve, DavidN and Muz's admin statuses should go to people that are capable. DavidN is capable, but doesn't spend the time here anymore, and Muz... well no offense, but you can't even post a news post correctly.
Edit: Oh, and by the way, all though we struggle sometimes to find news, we always try and get news items that aren't as widely known to the click community, unlike TDC which basically just makes news posts about the site's contents.
Why don't we establish a hall of fame here? Also, there could be a new public news section where anyone can post one announcement per week. Then we enhance the forum system so that it has more of the features of other forums (like embedding links into words as opposed to typing or pasting the full link). We could put in the Vitalize! Arcade we talked about earlier. We could allow people to be fans of members like we can favorite projects. We should be able to search members by date, number of fans, activity, and DC points, search projects by amount of favorites and progress, games, reviews, and articles by views, downloads/ratings, and number of comments. We should be able to look at the download list and see the number of comments and reviews it has. And we need more coders.

Muz, I have a hard time agreeing with what you said, but I can't really put it into words... To a certain extent, every site has its n00bs. TDC does everything right, and I don't see what could be done differently or added that would make it any better. This topic seems to remind me alot of the "TDC is dying" threads... Unnecessary and without a real point.
Also... "hardcore" is another one of those terms which I dislike. It goes with web 2.0.
I kind of see where you're going... but I don't think that it's needed, nor will it go anywhere.
TDC is showing it's age imo. I used to love visiting this site but there aren't any activities anymore. I never attended the competitions TDC had but they were still fun to see. TDC needs a complete make-over to attract new people. It's not rocket-science, every website that has been online for more than 5 years always does a change every once a year to regather the attention of newcomers, but TDC hasn't had any dramatical changes for about 4-5 years...

Yes, exactly what I think. Muz always makes these topics, and they usually end up as flame wars. Id perhaps like to see him make a game. you know, like "Create-games" LOL.
There's ony so much a click gaming site can do. Hall of Fame, Yearly Click awards, and maybe a code repository... that would be cool. This may sound stodgy, but a made-over TDC wouldn't attract my attention. If anything, it would repel me. I don't want to get used to the new layout. Really, it could be said that clicking community sites are mainly for n00bs. When you are an experienced user, you stay behind to help. Yea, it may not be as fun, but that's probably what you're stuck with, no matter what site you're on.
Keep in mind that TDC isn't the community, it's only part of the community. Yes, we're kind of in our own little world here, but that's the way it's always been. There are other sites in the community that gather news, GB as Adam said is an example. Klik-Me was a great news source as well until it fizzled.

I think a fly in a spider's web could do better, but where did I say I could to start with?

No offence taken IF you change my rating to "Grumpy old man". Speaking of Radix and click sites, Radix had a pretty solid concept for a more grownup version of TDC, but it never really got off the ground somehow. I myself like TDC and don't intend to make it to higher grounds or anything. Most elite clickers hate me anyway and I dislike the way they make games. I seem to be the Willie Nelson of click now.
Perhaps it's coz i ain't been a member for long, but i have no problems with this site. Though if i was to suggest improvements, they would be;
1. A new colour scheme every so-many months, just to frreshen it up a bit. And drop Mitch, or atleast that picture of him - make him a proper character, give him a personality and let him make funny comments. Try and give the site a little more humour (but obviously don't offend anyone!)
2. More compos, and more dedication from the site for them. Pablo is doing a fantastic job, yet his compo is being run through the Boards section. Make it headline news for this site and lets have more prizes, no matter how small or crappy. Everyone likes winning something, especially if it's promoted well and looks attractive. More coverage means more interest means more competition means a sweeter victory!
3. KlikCast = fantastico! Let's expand on this ideas though, let's have short video stories on the front page every few days. These could be reviews made and posted in by some extra 'Review Admins' or maybe a 'demo of the week'. How about a video of the latest GOTW? More media would bring the site up to modern day standards!
4. And new T-shirts please! Remember Sky 1's GamesWorld? Remember the GamesWorld jacket? No? Well a video is included at the bottom of this reply. Why not have a special T-shirt for GOTW winners? Make a new design/colour every 6 months or so to vary it a bit and keep interest fresh. Doesn't have to be expensive, just unique and something to aim for!
These are just a few ideas and a tip of what's cooking in my brain. And also, we gotta sort out the finance of this site coz i noticed the limit of donated funds is drawing closer. I donate every month but i cannot afford to run this site and i doubt anyone else can either, especially since most guys on here seem to still be in education.
why dont the admins just post ANYTHING on the news page that has to do with click or indie games?
this was a topic before i think but if we accept ANY game even non-click games, why arent we just another indie game site? we should stay focused on promoting click since we ARE pretty much the only mainly active click site, but why not post more news about whats going on in the indie scene. grab some news from other sites like tigsource, indiegames, etc.
not to mention the much needed site overhaul in php. instead of suggesting fixes for certain areas and implementing them as they come. do a complete overhaul. redo everything and implement it as a completely new infrastructure.
i agree that admins that arent active should be removed of their powers so more capable people can take over and help the site continue at a steady pace. or at least add more admins. redistribute the power if you will.
All very good points. Here is the catch, The Daily Click was build from the ground up. The site features you have now were not here 5 years ago, the site has indeed evolved lots over the years.
From earning dc points to in the future making the site in full php it will happen but it is going to take a while. Club is really into his regular paying job now and does not have lots of time right now. We did discuss lots of cool new features for the site but he needs to clear some time to do them.
Be sure to follow us on the twitters for the latest and greatest: @dailyclick
ok, here is another fact about TDC. The site is rather slow for me and pages open slow despite the fact that this site isn't that graphical (it's mostly gradient or solid colors ). There are also lots of unworking games that are still shown. Their links are not working and the pictures of the games don't show up. Why don't the admins just do a simple cleanup instead to speed up the site?
Mitch sux, so i think we should either make him not suck (ie. give him character, some cool lines, let him comment on news items/write articles etc) or kill him off and replace him with something cooler! I would prefere option 1, for the record - make him funny!
1) OMC - I know about how to change skins i changed mine a LOOOOOONG time ago, I'm talking about maybe changing the default skin for people who don't, or making more skins.
2) Admins - I think it is a good idea to change Mitch, I mean, we can keep him, but I do think it would be nice to have a new one, but admins have been doing a good job with the site lately, with all the new things being added.
Oh, and the idea about the Tourey being more then just in the forums is a good idea! maybe it could be the Official/Annual TDC competition for teh greatness prize of awsumness!
Your just jealous that you're not as awesome as me.

Eh, I dunno, the age of TDC does show, but it just doesn't look right to change anything. The gradients in the logo, the GOTW text, and the rest of the site are a part of TDC. Maybe being here for over half a decade makes me used to it, but I wouldn't want it differently.

I understand that people are sentimental about Mitch, yet how do you expect anything to change if you keep everything the same? If we want to attract more people into TDC's community then we need to improve things and bring the site up to todays standards. Not everyone in this world wants to remain in 2003!
I like things the way they are but i can see the community going slowly downhill in the future if we keep everything the same as it is now. Evolution, my friends!

I think not. It's still here, is it not? Why should it be any different in the future?
I say, let's quit wasting abundant amounts of time worrying about it dying and just make games and play games. After all, that's what this site it about. It's obviously not dying, since there are people here to worry about it dying. If it does, we'll worry about it then. It does no good to sit here and fret.
Waste your time making games instead! I know I'd rather play a cool game then read dismal predictions.
Perhaps i'm just business orientated in my thinking, yet i think it is very short-sighted to say "everything's fine now, so everything will stay the same in the future!" One day this site may find that more popular competition comes along, and then where would it be? Maybe i'm thinking all too doom-and-gloom, but i think it's true.
And for the record, i love this site and want time to stand still so it never has to change!

Sorry, but I couldn't help laughing a teeny bit at that.
Anyway, I never said it would stay fine. But honestly, honestly, it can be worried about if and when it ever does start to die, and it does no good to worry about it now. Competition?
This is a website! Does it really matter all that much?

Wasn't really intending to do anything more than pass the text file around to try and get some input and enthusiasm, but forgot to really distribute it.
I think Flava got one version of it, and some of the points were integrated into his early changes to TDC.
Hah! The long lost enigMAN is crawling in the forums! Hi!
I don't really understand what makes people think this is just a n00b site, I love TDC because I feel it offers a platform for everyone, novice to experienced.
And I agree that "Pablo's" TOUREY should have had a bit more frontpaging.
BTW, the xmassy lights and stuff up top hides Mitch and the logo, is it suppossed to do that? Same with the santa-hats, blocks the avatars. ?

I like TDC the way it is now. The new rating system, the projects feature, and everything else is all good because of Clubby's hard work. I say he needs a round of applause! =D
