Dark Scary voice> Welcome to the 2009 TDC-KLIKCAST HALLOWEEN 09 COMPO! Thats right folks it is official compo time, take a break from that 2-year project you are working on! We are looking for scary games this month!
The genre can range from the bloody castlevania or zombie slasher action games to the Mood setting terrifying slow pacing of a rpg haunted house game. The game does not have to have a billion levels either and we are not looking for hours of gameplay. If you can get your point across and scare the heck out of the people playing the game you know you did a good job. On a second note if you dont have a scary idea then build your game around a halloween theme and you will receive points for the scare factor right there!
Judging will be done by myself and like te TDC-Mini compo ALL the entries will be reviewed on the next special halloween klikcast and a prize can be won
for the winner! Runners up will receive 2000 and 1000 dc points respectfully and all the games also will get their own front page Haloween 09 compo button so that years from now people can still easily check out your games.
Once you finish your game upload it to the daily click site with the first line stating this was made for the halloween 09 compo so I can add you to the list of games to review. I will also be looking for the reactions of the people that downloaded your game so not only scare me but scare the heck out of everyone here. Final entries must be received by October 16th. That is just over 1 month.
Have fun, enjoy and get ready to turn on your dark scary side. -Lights off!-
Examples of some scary games submitted to the tdc over the years:
I think I'm gonna join this compo. Just have to come up with some ideas... I'm liking the more atmospheric, slower paced kind of game personally. Have to see what develops!
There are 10 types of people in the world: Those who understand binary and those who don't.
I think Im gonna have to enter this. ;D Of course I might not have it done. I have highschool soccer like everyday this week and next week but I'll try my bro Rikus.
Would it be acceptable to build on someone else's engine?
I was thinking of doing something using Andos' brilliant shadow caster.
I've been modifying it to shade the walls as well as the floor (doesn't cast shadows on the walls properly yet though).
Ok, so the atmospheric game idea didn't really turn up anything original... Luckily I got Sim City 4 the other day, for old times sake, and it's inspired me to make something I haven't really tried before: A sim game. And so I've set about making Simetery. A graveyard simulator! Should be fun.

Nothing will be confirmed until the game is uploaded to the site on the download page. So take your time do whatever make the game or dont, once you put it on the site it will be added to the list of entries, even if you post it on the due date

"So I heard you cant see" (working on title..!)
It's kinda early, and it won't be a very big game but I will hopefully finish it.
It really is hard to make a scary game in MMF..!
It's not, it's more like Sim City, Theme Park, etc... Except less, y'know, ridiculously deep x) But then I do only have a month... I might finish what I can and get it into a playable state for the compo and then continue to develop it after. I'll see how it goes!

Callebo, that looks great! BTW, any chance you'll make it where the shadows of the tombstones and trees turn as the flashlight shines on them, because that would really make a mood setter!

Hey, great idea!.. But I think that is beyond my cunning
I think it would be cooler to disguise the game as a normal cooking sim, and have it attempt to murder the player in various ways starting halfway in. I've written down some fun things, like slicing off your fingers by accident, or spilling a burning pot on yourself, or sticking your hand in an oven, or electrocuting yourself while plugging in a microwave, or standing in front of the window too long only to notice a red dot on your head and 5 seconds later get it blown off. Or of course, just have a maniac with a chainsaw burst through the door and knock you down and eviscerate you if you attempt to leave the level
(i just updated that download if you want to check it out....)
(edit: and if you do, seriously, trying dying as santa. Its the most hilarious death sequence)
Hmm, I think perhaps changing the colour of the outlines to something else. Maybe a yellow-white colour to emulate moonlight or something? I don't know, that might be a bit too harsh contrast wise with the rest of the graphics...

Kind of of me but I have to say that the bottom one really looks good. Like everything had an aura of blood/horror, good for a halloween game imho.
Keep it up! Like the style, the character looks both cute and terrified, a win/win combo.
Durr, I hate to break hearts, but I've decided that even though the idea of a violent halloween cooking game is totally awesome, I'll not be the one to see it to fruition. Gotta invest all me time in the current project: http://create-games.com/project.asp?view=main&id=1617 Oh yeah, and that thing where I do homework and graduate.
I was gonna enter too, I had a shooter started already, it wasn't that bad even. But I really wanna work on the fall stuff for Motherworld while it's actually still fall. So all my mmf2 will be devoted it.
Hopefully, the other guys games are being worked on. I'd hate to be the only one with a demo or something. Anyway. Here's a pic of the start of the training level.
Hopefully, I'll have more next week.

Hmm, I'm thinking of joining this, though it'll be quite a challenge to h-wip something up in less than a week, especially since I'm already participating in the VGNG-compo.
I think I'm going to have to pull out of getting a working release for the compo deadline. Starting back at uni has taken a chunk out of my time. Also the other day my drink got spiked on a night out, I presumably took a fall even though I don't remember anything, and now I have six stitches in my forehead. Although that's very Halloween, it's kind of taken the wind out of my sails creativity wise. I will be working on Simetery though, just don't expect an entry from me D:

I may have to withdraw my submission. I don't know if I can fix a bug that impares a major feature in my game. I'll try a few different options I've come up with. Whether or not I do get it in, the game will be done by November at the least.

Sad to read that some people are withdrawing their entries.
Hopefully there will still be a few games.
I will definitely deliver a 1 level demo with a boss fight on the 16th. It most probably won't be as polished as I would like, but at least it'll be something I guess.
Okay, I better get my lazy ass back to work on the game...
Whew. Here's my entry, made in TGF. I just submitted it, so it hasn't been approved for the download page yet. If anyone plays it early and finds any bugs or spelling errors, please let me know. I made a good chunk of the game while I was half asleep and I'm paranoid that I missed something in my mad rush to get it done.
Also, please let me know if you have any trouble with the download link. The website that it was going to be hosted at was hit with some major technical difficulties that still haven't been resolved, so I had to find a new place to host it on super-short notice.
Anyway, the game is Super Spooky Haunted House Duck Fight. A brand new Trick or Treat adventure game set in the world of Duck Fight.
In an attempt to be more atmospheric, the pace of the game is pretty slow. You can inspect almost everything you come across, there are at least two different endings, a few secrets, and a few Easter eggs. I also tried to make it hard to discover every bit of dialog with just one playthrough.
Thanks to everyone who submitted! So far I have been very impressed! Keep them coming! It is going to be a hard judge period! Remember your comments and star ratings will be added to the overall score so be sure to play these games and leave a comment!

Hi Eternal Man, for sure. All the results with the reviews can be checked out on the latest klikcast but here are all the results. And thanks again for all the submissions, I had so much fun playing and reviewing these games!
Super Spooky Haunted House Duck Fight
In Super Spooky Haunted House Duck Fight you start out playing
as a kid who is just annoying his neighbors by trick or treating
at a very late hour. All is good with our hero until his candy bag
gets stolen by a angry duck.
Before your candy even gets stolen the game starts out by you fooling
around by ringing the door bells and trying to get candy which is a nice
touch. The game has a spooky mood to it and the beginning does draw you
in awaiting what horrible thing will happen.
The graphics are a bit simple overall but it’s more of a stylish choice
and it does not distract from the overall game. The main problem with the game
is that it’s too short. Once your candy gets stolen you move to the forest were
right away you have to fight the dug that stole your candy. When you defeat him
the game is over. It would have been cool to fight off some ghosts in the forest
maybe check out the cemetery in search of your candy before you would get to the
duck.
Overall a fun spooky little game that I would still check out, it is just too short.

To Darken My World
In to darken my world you actually have to take out the light and create darkness, this alone brings
up some cool game play elements. In the game you have to find and shoot out these light posts, once you destroyed
all the light posts the level itself actually becomes dark, which makes sense but it was a nice surprise. So once
everything is dark you just need to find some lighted dots to continue on to the next level. The game gets harder
as you continue on, and the main character you play looks pretty cool. It’s a shame that he does not have some sort
of animation. The game play itself can be a bit uneven as sometimes you jump into certain death because of the spikes.
When you take the time and learn how to play this, to darken my world is actually a good game that just needs
some level design fixed here and there.
In Quarantine created by Adan, you have to fight of zombies while earning
cash so you can buy even bigger weapons to quickly kill even more zombies.
It’s a cool system and it works. The game has a cool tutorial that explains
how you can buy weapons and such and the control system is pretty simple but
can be glitchy at times. The game has a create weapon system were you can fire
with your mouse and your heroes arm moves perfectly were you want him to shoot.
The game ads some great little bits into the mix not only do you just shoot
zombies but there are even some small puzzles to solve and you are even thrown
into a back of a truck.
The graphics could be a bit more fleshed out and there is only 1 type of
zombie to kill there is a huge amount of content to explore here and the sound
effects are easy on the ear. The only other thing that bothers me is that there
is no musical score to keep the adrenaline pumping.
Overall a solid zombie killing game experience that gives you a bit extra when
you least expect it.

Pac Trip
Pac trip eats a magic mushroom and is thrown into a alien world filled with all sorts of crazy stuff. I had a great
time playing this action shooter actually. The graphics fit the game just fine and it’s great fun blasting at
aliens and other nasties. The great thing about this game is that it continues to give you new enemies and
new weapons as you got further in the game, and I loved that. The controls were very easy and big thumbs up for
the music and sound effects, very well picked and they fitted perfectly with this type of game.
My only gripe is that once you hit a enemies you die instantly. It would be better to lose a life and continue on.
The game is a bit unforgiving that way, even more so later in the game. Also, and I hope this game will get more updates,
is to include more levels with bosses, which would really make this game a instant classic shooter in my opinion.
Who does not want control pacman while kicking some mayor Alien ass?
I was very impressed with this action game, very well made and some of the weapons made me laugh. Well done Sir!

So I heard you can't see
In this game you fall into a dark hole, when you wake up you
are surrounded by a increasing darkness and strange noises.
Now it’s up to you and your trust lantern to kill the creepy monsters
and very creepy ghost girls once and for all!
Now I have to applaud Callebo for actually making me jump out of my seat
somewhere in the game some creepy images pop up while you are playing and
it ups the creepiness factor by 100%, well done sir.
The graphics are well done and I loved killing the bad guys with my lantern,
also the music and sound effects really help create a scary mood that I just loved.
What would make this game even better would have been a online high score system
so I could compete with other adventures out there. Also what would have been nice is
if different sections of the cemetery would open up the longer you played.
However, the game does get increasingly harder and it also gets darker with
plenty of different enemies to defeat, this is a Halloween game not to be missed. Well done!

The Almost Heaven Crisis
When you start up the game you are literally thrown into what seems to be a huge battle against the zombies.
You start off alone in the snow and your first order of business is to find a human camp and a computer inside it.
Using the computer you can buy some weapons, health and all sort of goodies, which you will need. Because once it
gets dark all hell breaks loose.
The vibe of the game reminds of a lot of that of the Silent Hill series, very eerie and while you are walking around
you just know something bad is going to happen. I love these type of games and I wish more of them would be made.
You can take advantage of the day time to pile up on food, you need to keep eating since you will die if you don’t.
The graphics while a bit tiny do the trick just fine and add to the style of the game, the sound effects are really
well made to with the wind blowing in your ears during the day and once it gets dark the music really turns scary,
upping the mood.
When you first play it the game can be hard and you soon find yourself dying quickly if you have not bought any guns.
I also think for future version that you can be assigned missions for money so you have a objective to keep you busy
since right now I got the feeling I just had to kill as many zombies as I could during the night. Having a objective
to complete would have made it more suspenful and fun during the night.
Other than that, there is a huge potential with this survival game and I hope Philip will keep working on this giant world
he has successfully created. As it is now there is still lots of work to be done but you will still enjoy the ride
with this version.
Silhouette is a interesting game. It reminded me a bit of the old Prince of persia games but also the Another world game.
The special thing about this game is that the animation is fluent, you can run jump duck and fight and all of this
goes seaming less, in the game you have to try and progress while using your knife sometimes and even to kill a werewolf.
While the graphics and engine of this game are amazing, the game is incredibly hard, I think I died a million times
before figuring out what to do next, and I don’t know if everyone has as much patients as I do. There are hint
scattered in the play field on what to do next but often they are too small to notice.
The music and sound effects to draw you perfectly into this creepy world and the game has a great original vibe to it.
I do wish there were more enemies instead of you wandering and jumping for 5 to 10 minutes before you first werewolf
appears, and maybe things a bit easier when you start. The game has lots of potential and I can’t wait to see this
game explored further.
From the very first menu screen, you know this game will something bloody special.
In the game you are slasher boy and you are the world’s only hope of getting rid
of some strange ghosts!
The graphics in the game stand out and are very well done, from slasher boys
animations to the background and blood effects lots of work went into these.
You have can slah the ghost or use them as a bouncing board but if you bounce wrong
you soon find yourself in a ditch. The game is very hard and you will die often and
hard. You do go back to a checkpoint that is not too far away once you lose a life but
it can be frustrating at times. If you keep at it you will be rewarded at the end of
the game with a very cool boss fight.
While the graphics and game play draw you into the game the sound effects almost draw you
right back out, it also does not help the game does not have any music, this is a bit of a
let down some scar music and if the sound effects had a bit more bit to them that would
have completed the package.
As it is now this is a great slasher action game that while being hard rewards you if you stick with it.
