I haven't been around much because of university, but have the next 4 weeks free to do things - including coding for the site. I bascially figured here would be a good place for you all to post your site suggestions, and we'll take a look at whether or not they should/could be coded. The list below will show any features that are in progress or that have been completed.
I seem remember there being a "site suggestion" thread knocking around which had a lot of suggestions - can't remember where it is though. If anyone could point it out to me, that'd be great. For that reason, I've stickied this thread so that it doesn't get lost!
Cheers.
Non-started updates
- Crediting multiple users in downloads
- Modify the forum post editing system
In-progress updates
None at the moment
Completed updates
- Added pages to DC mail to speed up loading time of page (40 messages are displayed on each page)
- Settings page now available to everyone
- Can now remove projects from your favourite projects list
- Polls can now be added by anyone
- Page titles in browser title bar
- Make changes to active users page (get rid of IP addresses .etc)
Heh yeah I think people have been asking for pages on mail for the last 2-3 years - figured it was about time I did it
The settings page is also no longer restricted to VIP members - the only reason it was given to VIP members was for testing purposes, and I think nearly 1 year is enough testing for that. Can now also remove favourites from your favourite projects list.
Ability to de-fav projects. I get updates sometimes for projects I couldnt really care about anymore.
Ability to hide user status on Active users list. I dont see why only the admin should have this privilege, if I don't want people watching my every move, I should have that right. Otherwise remove it from the admins, why the need to hide?
Lol, I didn't know admins could hide from the active user list.

Umm no The info on the active page is pretty limited in the first place. And besides thats why the page is so popular it is fun to see what other people are up to.
Only reason why the admins activity is blocked is because we test out certain sections of the site (new pages) we dont want other folks to see yet I rather would like the admins to be unblocked also but there ya have it

youre joking right? tdc shows the first 3 bits of every users ip address. i wouldnt call that "limited". a regular user shouldnt be able to see ANY part of another users ip address. also, whether its fun to see what others are doing or not, its a little thing called privacy.
i'd rather see a list of active users in one of the side bars than a page fully devoted to active users and what each and every one of them is doing and how long theyve been there.
I like the actives page, but there's no need for non-admins to see IP addresses, and I guess the last-visited page thing could go. It's occasionally handy though. Like when you see someone on a projcomment page, you know they're replying to something you posted. Or when they're checking the DC Mail you sent them.
Actually I agree about the IP address option, that should be removed for non admins maybe Flava can do something about that. Good observation
Other then that I stand behind what I said before the active page is pretty handy to see what someone else is doing, it is hardly that detailed (doesnt give out what particular download or forum page you are looking at) but it is just enough to see what general page someone is visiting.

I like the Active Users Page. It is nice to see what the community is upto. Too many users complain about the Community dying out and i for one would like to know how many people are on the site and exactly what they are looking at. If you ask me it doesn't show enough at the minute.
It shows EXACTLY ehich page they are on and it even shows Guests!! If you are concerned about your privacy log off before looking at the posts.
With regards to recommendations for the site I agree with Jon Lambert about giving everyone access to create polls but they would need to be moderated so that they are not abused. An option to sell back your tags/custom rating (at a loss - for example half of what they cost you) for when you get bored of them or a small fee to change your Custom Rating to something else would be great.
About the Arcade button at the top.. is that going to be merged into the Navigation Bar at some point because it just looks out of place on any of the themes available on the site.

Yes but you can also see what the mods and admin are looking at. As for "test out certain sections of the site (new pages) we dont want other folks to see yet" Just give the sections code names or none at all? I really don't see how that's much of an excuse to hide your activities?

Good point - I think everyone should get to see what everyone else is doing (including admins). Maybe there was another reason this feature was put in that I'm not aware of - the only thing I can think is that Clubby didn't want people seeing the names of admin related pages. Maybe I'll look into just blocking those pages from being shown.
The reason for removing the pages admins are looking at, is it exposed the names of pages under development/testing, which sometimes ended up getting messed around with
I'll sort out the flash tag, I need to make sure everything is isolated away, so you can stick that one on my list
Oh, could we add a View Results (null vote) option to poll threads? Also a Java tag. And maybe pictures that function as hyperlinks (aka plain old hyperlinks)
Don't make it sound like being on the Active Users page is like a direct eye into your soul and every day life. It's merely what page you are viewing on the site. It's not like it's telling me that someone is openly masturbating to someones "The real you" picture - though, that might be kind of useful, perhaps too creepy to add. But still, I see no reason why the Active Users page provokes any invasion of privacy. You're on a public website, and plus, the page is generally empty enough as it is. Last thing we need is people who are on the site, hiding themselves.
I also don't mind the Active Users page being left as it is. What need is there to hide other than personal preference? The benefits for the site is it shows just how active the site is at any one time and by who. So i can't see where an Admin is - so what? I know they aren't watching me outside my flat so what difference does it make. It might if i was up to no good, but i never am.
Suggestions though - I don't think de-favouriting would be anything but de-motivating for the owners of those projects and may cause projects to get overlooked - not good for the new users on this site! How about blocking updates for Projects you no longer want to be updated for?
Also for a suggestion, how about being able to change the background colour and/or import a backdrop photo/picture for your projects/downloads? This would make the pages look more attractive and more unique. As well as this, a choice of fonts and colours would be useful too
Another Suggestion and I KNOW this has been requested before - change the Window Title to display the page you are actually on instead of The Daily Click. Just two levels would do.
For Example
The Daily Click (for the homepage)
The Daily Click - Forums (obvious)
The Daily Click - Klik Coding Help (again obvious)
The Daily Click - Individual thread name
This would make it easier for thos of us who use brwosers with multiple Tab Support and could probably be incorporated about the same time as the changes to the active users page..... I think

Just implemented this - it might not work on all pages, but should work on most (things like forum posts, downloads .etc)
This is more Arcade related, but what is the schedule for "developer center" where users could submit their own games for the Arcade without the need of sending mfa files around? And related to this, will it be possible for TDC users to select between "publish on TDC / publish on Arcade" when submitting content here?
Here's a suggestion! Either make the arcade banner slightly shorter, or have the option to disable it (and put a normal link somewhere). Three times I tried to click the thread with the latest post and three times I went to the arcade instead. Darn macbook trackpad.
Why don't we make it so that you can edit a post after someone posts after it, but make the little E green or something and/or display the time it was edited (if it was edited after a post was made.)

It used to be to prevent abuse, like people pretending that they didn't say something. It's not so bad now. Besides, most forums have that "Edited 5 mins ago" feature. I like it as it is, because it prevents a lot of annoyingness, but I'm not opposed to changing it.
I think that 4 word limit should go, though. Maybe change it to a 4 letter limit so people don't impulsively reply with "yes", "no", "". Sometimes all you want to do is post an URL, and most people figure how to get past the limit anyway.
Disclaimer: Any sarcasm in my posts will not be mentioned as that would ruin the purpose. It is assumed that the reader is intelligent enough to tell the difference between what is sarcasm and what is not.
I think the post editing system should stay as it is. If there's something you so desperately want to remove, you can always PM an admin. Like Muz said, it prevents annoyingness. People would start quoting all the time so that there'd be no chance for others to remove what they said later.
Probably makes people think twice before posting too, which is good.
Did you read my whole post? A blue E would show that you edited it before anyone replied. Green shows you edited after a reply. If somethings missing and theres a green E, it's probably because you edited it away. That's why the time and stuff would be there too, so you can check the last edit against any replies who can accuse you of not saying something.
Or better yet, why can't you just let the person who made a post, edit his or her initial post, so that we can post updates on something without replies. Mainly because if we have a thread and the original post is obsolete, people are probably not going to fish through the thread to try to find the most recent information. They could, but they wont.
Last thing we need is another thing for the admins to need to approve of. I say we just let people edit their posts, but under a confined set of rules to avoid abuse. I mean seriously, every other board out there lets you do it. Why are we openly reporting that we edited a post BEFORE anyone replies to it (no one cares), instead of after we edit it (when people might actually care).
The majority of edits would likely be typo or misinformation correction and not deceptive manipulation. And you know, nothing says that a new editing system would have to be permanent! So perhaps it should/could be changed.
I'd like to know what Club, Flava, and Rikus think about it.
I'm registered to about 5-6 forums at the moment - and people can edit their posts whenevever, and a time is displayed saying when they edited it. I think it'd work the same here. Though I'm not sure how long it'd take to implement due to the current database structure of TDC.
I dont know flava its a bit plain now? The whole point was for peeps to notice the arcade and granded while a bit big, i believe there should be a graphic still there maybe smaller? For new people to be attracted to it. Personally the big graphic never bothered me in the first place but thats just me.

I think without something more than a regular link, the Arcade link looks kinda crappy and underwhelming. I didn't mind the old logo and liked the way it made the Arcade look more spectacular - i don't think the new way does it enough justice
The arcade has that little icon in the top-right corner leading back here, so maybe something like that... However, it might give me the same feeling the TDC icon in the arcade gives me, which is that the arcade and the main site are way separate. They seem like completely separate. Having the link on the bar is less prominent but makes it feel a bit more connected?
The active users page has pretty much been re-designed (might not look like it at first glance though). Took me hours to get it working how I wanted so hope everyone is happy with it.
I've applied changes according to requests in this thread, and also added the ability to view specific pages that others are looking at (so you can see what downloads and things people are checking out).
Let me know of any bugs you find or other suggestions you might have
OMG i hate the new Active page - now you can spy on me, the lady down the road can spy on me and the GOVERNMENT can spy on me!!!
Only being sarcastic - it looks great. I would only re-add one thing though - our avatars are now missing and i miss that, it made it quicker to read who was online
Originally Posted by Jon Lambert If you add the avatars back, make them a quarter of the regular size (half the dimensions). That way the list isn't too long.
Good idea - I've added them back but made them a little smaller
Suggestion: Add the big, small, red, blue, and green tags to the toolbox for formatting posts. Also, when making replies to a post, the box at the bottom really only needs to show the last 10 or so, and then maybe a link to view more. Also, when the "Thanks for submitting a reply!" page comes up, make the view reply button show just the page with your reply. Also, maybe you might have threads load up at the latest page you last viewed, for example, if I view a thread for the first time, it shows the first page, and if I go as far as the fifth page and then leave, the next time I click the link in the sidebar thing it starts at the fifth page.
What's the system for the words under the user name on the active users page? Mine says "Addicted to TDC " and I saw it say "Old tdc fart" and "uber member" for some others.
The words under the username are there as a sort of replacement for the stars on the forum. If you don't have a custom rating then a standard one will show up on the active users page based on the number of DC points you have.
For those interested, this is basically how it works it out (it's not really that important, but I know some would like to know). There isn't really much of a reason to them - they're just there to make the active users page look consistent for those who don't have custom ratings.

I suggest notification when I get post reply
I think he means that he would like a notification when he's written in a thread and there are new thread posts after his post (just like in many mainstream forum systems like phpBB etc.)
I have no idea what he means with the 2nd thing though
Would it be possible to add some kind of organization for the articles? Even something simple like programming, art, etc. Searching is great most of the time, but you have to be spot on to be able to find anything.

Searching is great??? I mean most of time it doesnt work, and when it does it ussually finds you some completely unrelated articles from the ones you were looking for.

We here at The Daily Click appreciate your suggestion, and please know that we give the utmost attention to each idea received. With that having been said, we like to think that tags on The Daily Click are special, and with exclusive tags (such as GOTW/M trophies and admin-assigned trophies), just as with exclusive ratings, people can enjoy a sense of appreciation for who they are, or who they are recognized as. As a result, your idea for custom tags will have to be rejected as of right now. However, please feel free to suggest more things.
There should be a a user of the month, like game of the week, where every month someone is chosen and they get a special tag for the month or something Idk, it seemed like a cool idea to me.
If you put a million monkeys at a million keyboards, one of them will eventually write a Java program.
The rest of them will write Perl programs.
The way I see it, the only people whose feelings may get hurt are those who feel they should have won, they would probably be the nominees. You could deal with the not getting picked feelings hurt problem with a consolation prize, orpointing out that they were awesome enough to be nominated.

That consolation prize would eventually be as worthless as the VIP tag

User of the Month is a really bad idea IMO. It could be too easily exploited, unless it's picked by the admins in which case people will whine and accuse them of being biased instead.
- Ok, you must admit that was the most creative cussing this site have ever seen -

Like the main prize would be worth anything to begin with.

I would win every month so not like it matters.
Yeah, with Gamester winning every month it would just get frustraiting for us all =(
I liked it when everybody got vapor ware ratings. When I was growing up and playing games with my brother. We had fun coming up with things for the losser to do. The vapor rating reminded of that.
I think that articles should need to be approved, like downloads. No offense to Dogzer, but his new article is a bunch of incorrect info that's only purpose was to get him points... I hat getting all excited about there finally being a new article only to find that it's poorly written or incorrect...

Would you mind making code work in signatures? I.e., make it so when you use html in a signature, it shows what the code does instead of showing the code.
