I sharply disagree. I used to make games with ripped graphics, they blended together very well, and every single person I knew, pointed it out to me. I've even had a lot of people accuse me of not making the game because they recognized the graphics. So no, the average player does care, they do know, and it will look bad on you.
I have not seen a single click game with ripped graphics that blended well together =/.

From a legal view... that's very dangerous. It's like pirating. Sports teams make as much money from merchandising as they make off of tickets.. some make more. Making a game on them is stepping on their merchandising money.
But like with pirating things, unless you do it blatantly in front of them, they're not going to hunt you down. I certainly wouldn't recommend it. It's not a safe way to make money, similar to trying to take coins from a fountain.
