I'm sure there are millions of threads on the internet about this already yet I want to beat the horse while it isn't dead yet because I think the whole topic is still pretty "fresh".
Flash VS HTML5
Does flash even stand a chance? What exactly is HTML5 even capable of. I guess if this is cleared we can say if FLASH will die eventually.
What do people use Flash for?
1) Annoying ads
-> Annoying ads can be blocked easily with pop up blockers. Maybe it will get a tiny bit tricker to block those if they are embedded into a site properly with HTML5 so PLUS for ad agencies?
2) Flash animations
-> HTML 5 will play H264 videos just fine. SADLY the majority of people *sigh* doesn't care about SWF files. They rather watch them converted on youtube. Also a lot of people do very advanced stuff in flash so no one can play it proberly so they will export all the stills and load them into flash as sequence.
So while I think flash animations might not die we won't see them as PURE SWFs anymore (just for the sake of cellphones for example)
3) Games
-> I don't know how powerful HTML5 is. I don't know it's technical specs. Can it run a lot of parallax stuff smoothly for example? I have no idea
4) websites
-> blah blah blah all the points I already brought up above / I think they will all switch to HTML5 if it works well so iphone/ipod fags won't have to cry about it and it will also run smoothly on my android which is supposed to play flash just fine which it doesn't - lag-o-rama
I also just think you will be able to navigate way better inside a HTML5 page. You can link way better to HTML5 pages. You can do a keyword search , place your ads and have googles spiders crawl all over your HTML5 page. Nothing flash is capable off so html5 seems to beat this round as well.
-----------
So what's your opinion?
I hate Steve Jobs / hope he drops dead / I love Flash
but I guess I just have to face reality and stop dreaming.
I always hated flash (even tho I am making money since we got the swf runtime), I love HTML5. I am pretty sure anything you can do in flash is possible in HTML5, and more. It is just that currently the whole browsergame world is java and flash based.
oh wow hayo you make money with flash? how so? and how much do they pay ?
currently its java and flash true while i think java is pretty dead by now as well. people dont like to download java and often its a pain in the ass to get it to run on different PCs. flash seems almost way more common but with HTML 5 we dont need to tackle the plug in obstacle.
BUT - will clockteam support this?
WOW thanks man! this is the first html5 game i have ever seen. its just so weird. i alwasy right click to see the flash context menu but there IS NONE. this isnt flash- its html5
i am impressed
I am wondering where those people are from. The names suggest german and the fact it uses the great X & C controls and not fucking Z and X (i could punch people for using those) hints to them being German as well.
also the first thing I have noticed and I instantly loved this about html5: i dont need to click into the window so that it gets the focus and i can keep on playing. this still confuses people about flash lol
Shame it doesn't work on Froyo. Oh android why do you just suck so badly? First I get some annoying Flash ad which works well and wont fuck off so i click on "play biolab" and i get a loading bar and it stops at 1/4 :C
impact looks like a pretty interesting program. i am wondering how exactly it works / checking all the provided info.
also the game probably works in fire fox on android but i cant press C or X so i will never know haha

If you wait, it actually finishes loading. Works just fine on Froyo.

oh wow i will try that. ive waited for 5 minutes and nothing would happen. that seemed like a long enough time for me especially given the fact my phone is faster than my shit ass connection ive got for my pc.
I do hope HTML 5 will take over, seems a lot is possible with it.
Although I fundamentally agree with that dude talking about the ipad I disagree with not being able to do what I want with my hardware. He is happy letting Mr Jobs control what he can run on it... I just do not understand that mentality at all. I really do not like some of Apples policies.
I really detest hardware platforms with built in OS constraints against software. I really wanted the crunchpad to come out and obliterate the ipad, but that fell through due to corporate greed... http://techcrunch.com/2009/06/03/crunchpad-the-launch-prototype/
Would have been ace, could have run any OS you fancy (within reason)... Thats life I guess.
The trouble with html5 is that it seems to be pushing the whole webapps thing down our necks, which I really hate (because I don't or rarely use webapps or play flash games). I am wondering what browser implementations are going to do to html5, and I wonder how many proprietary functions are going to exist. Back in the day of activex, Internet Explorer invented its own standards to grab a portion of the market and keep it. It appears that google are taking a similar approach in some aspects with their chrome browser (exposed javascript functions?) but it's not nearly as bad. The trouble with the web in general is that there are various interpretations of the standard. At least with flash the implementations are controlled by a single body of people who can make everything consistent, without having a bias towards any browser in particular. The canvas for video is all I really care about, and there have been arguments about the video encoding standards already, though I think we are converging to an open standard. Other than video I can't think of anything else I would appreciate html5 for. Flash isn't going to die unless people stop using it, but that means ditching all of the existing content. Perhaps flash will evolve into a minimal javascript runtime that uses html5 standards anyway, and this will take care of any cross-browser issues, much like jQuery does. That way adobe will still be producing tools for building web apps. I suppose there is the possibility of having an additional plugin to support the older content as well that uses the new technology.
Both flash and HTML5 will die, that's a fact. The only open question is "when".
But yeah, it will be interesting to see how fast HTML5 will pick up. To be honest, I don't have enough knowledge to be able to produce even an guesstimation, so I'll just sit back and see how things eventually turn out.
There's some profanity, but his points are valid and I agree with what he says.
this guy is so full of shit.
it just reminds me why i hate apple and its user base and i would just love to shit down his throat after ive listened to his BS for 2 minutes and thats put a nice way...
so when does he start talking about html and flash because after fapping to apple for a way too long time and telling everybody else they are stupid for not joining a big jerk off session aimed towards apple i just couldnt bear with it any longer.
Was glossy then . I am thinking of making a paper called "The Magpie effect in electronics consumer products", and it will discuss the marketing strategy of making a product extrememely glossy and shiny to attract customers, at the disadvantage of severe greasy figerprints during real life practical use.

I SECOND that. It's 2011 FFS and still 50% of the games people play are 2D.
You're speaking absolute nonsense and generating your own random statistics.
I completely agree with Adam. Just because it's 2011 does not mean 2D games are obsolete. Unless of course you completely forgot what gaming was all about, which is to be fun. Not every game has to be 3D. In fact, it's actually extremely annoying that 2D seems to be a dying trend.
Games like Limbo, Braid, Castle Crashers, and a wide variety of other 2D games are a fantastic and refreshing reminder of why we play videogames. If you disagree, fine, but do not shove your narrow opinion down other peoples throat like it's a fact because it's far from it.

Thank you!
If you put a million monkeys at a million keyboards, one of them will eventually write a Java program.
The rest of them will write Perl programs.
every time flash player updates it just get worse and worse and every time I am like "no i won't update this time but then can it really get any worse? why should they fuck it up again. i am sure they improved it" and BAM
its suddenly WAY WAY WORSE AGAIN
ignored the latest update (10.2) for ages- updated today and it's just a nightmare. it would even ZOOM onto a vimeo video and make it impossible to watch that way.
I agree with Hagar. As much as I don'T want to admit it Apple can do some good products- hardware wise (which is samsung actually lol). But then they fuck it up with their awful politics and rules and forcing stuff onto you -it's awful! I don't want a company to tell me what to do with my device.
I guess you can only unleash the full power of an iphone and ipad if you just jail break it and that's pretty much what everyone does anyways.

Also Adam - please stop invading my threads and start little flame wars with people. I don't want that negative stuff and I don't enjoy seeing people getting attacked since it always tends to come from your side.
Probably both will coexist for a long time and don't forget that microsoft silverlight thing. I don't need it and it don't want it so I hope that html5 will kill that thing first! And then slowly on flash ... However flash and silverlight are speedier than html5 at the moment. I am talking out games here. I would be awesome if the flash and silverlight sdks would only export to html5 in the near future ...
