That thread with all of the oldie members actually reminded me of a competition once held at Total klik. I think it was called the 4-bit competition. The idea was to make games loosely within the limitations of the original gameboy. Same screen resolution (160x144) and only 4 shades of one colour.
This isn't a competition just an idea that might be fun because I remember the original being extremely popular all over the community!
Okay now in all seriousness, are you proposing we do another competition Andy? In hopes of reviving some interest in TDC? If so, has anyone put any effort toward executing Eliris's idea? Or would we just do this instead?

Guys, those look fantastic! I might attempt something small, but I've already got a project in the works. That and if that christmas gift compo ideas go active I really want to do it Can someone post the gameboy specs please?
So cool to see there's an interest for this, I'm currently working on a little rpg with an engine havily based on Pokemon red/blue!
It's going to be classic rpg but with a business twist. instead of fighting battles, the game is about creating a business empire, so it's gonna be a managment game where you walk around with a single character!

Dear Andy I am REALLY dissapointed in you and thought you would know better
you are a retro gamer
youve been there on TK
so get your facts right
it was the 2-bit competition
TWO
2 bit = 4 colours
the game boy had 4 shade of green
seriously bro :C (i still love you tough)
btw the dude posting that M Bison video: aweome! one of the best things on the internet / the reason why youtube was made
Thats what ive got going so far. It's not a mockup. I wanted to wait until i got the basic engine working (and music) before posting something.
i know currently i am acting like a complete douchebag from hell and i am sorry about it but have you ever done something that ISNT a platformer?
i mean nice and cool you are making a game / ripping of kirby but it feels like the same thing over and over again like all your games just in green this time sigh
Yes true but you double posted you comeplete idiot!!! what the hell I think I hate you now.
I do go for the platformer thing. It's easier to reuse code and I have a lot of stuff already made for platformers and not a lot else for other genres.
You should wait to play the game to see just how much I rip off Kirby. Because damn I'm going to rip it off SO much it will hurt your eyes. I might even make my character be able to defeat enemies like all those other Nintendo games or shoot guns like Megaman/Metroid. Ive already ripped off Tetris' points system. Dracula is in there somewhere too because you can't ignore Castlevania. Hmm what else. Oh yeah there is a triforce shaped object hidden away in the background on level 3 for those with keen eyes. (This is starting to sound like a rant now, don't mean to mislead you i'm just bored and trying to be funny.)
To be honest I don't thik I'm capable of making small graphics I've got some art talent, but definitely not pixel art talent Probably why my games always have big sprites.
Anyway, if someone wants it, I have a pretty nice gameboy Zelda engine with the right resolution and scrolling and sword play and boomerang and cliff jumping.

Yeah my memory is bad, getting old. 2-bit it is.
Love you too bud
You've got me quite excited there so now I hope you better put Dracula in there and im serious. It would be hilarious and something no one would expect. It's just that I've made this platformer this weekend in a game jam where most people also coded platformers. It's so easy but yeh everyone does it so I'm not blaming you personally but not a bad idea to splice things up and do something new that will surprise everyone like Dracula or alukard.
Im wondering if anybody still has any of those 2bit tk games.overall I still miss tk. The front-page on here makes it look like as nigga stuff wasn't happening while there is stuff going on plus tk was funny.
I think it's a teeny tiny cowboy. Or Indiana Jones. Either way, it's a promising start. With so few pixels and colours to work with, you're doing well if people can even recognize what it's supposed to be (I know I'm struggling with my 16x16 sprites).
Right on the money Sketch! It's supposed to be an Indiana Jones Rip off. I thik I'm going to use the character concept from Vagabond PI, which is supposed to be a Dick Tracy rip off but the fedora still screams Indy to me
I've got an idea down, it'll be a short puzzle game about avoiding booby traps and trying to solve puzzles to open tombs and temples. Here's a bigger pic with the characters talking pic on it.
Have you ever played "Indiana Jones' Desktop Adventures"? http://sites.google.com/site/indysdesktop/home22
It was a really simple little adventure/puzzle game, with all the locations/puzzles/items/objectives randomly generated so it's different every time you play, and games only last about 30 minutes. It's actually the kind of game that would be totally do-able in MMF2.

indy's desktop adventure is the best game to EVER fit on a floppy. seriously i was amazed they managed to put this game on a single floppy. in fact i freaking bought it for my birthday when i was a kid like when it was my birthday i drove down town with my father and he was like "well son what do you want?" and I was like "squeeee iiiiindy!"
also yodas stories is pretty cool too and they even ported that one to GBC i believe lol
Yeah i played Indy game on a computer in my old middle school's library. Back then we still had some BBC micro computers in the computer room where you could play Sim city, Thrust or some clone of Donkey kong.
Seems like a good idea, I would like to join in if so, just that my head is full ofcompos =0
-NG holiday compo
-wayofthepixel pixel art compo
-Gimptalk digital painting compo
and even the christmas gift compo,
unless if we made this the xmas gift compo with the limitations you gave :0

wow this is fucking kick ass! one of the best things ive ever seen here on tdc. mostly people are just programmers but not so much artists. you sir, win the dc.
anyways NG holiday compo? just forget about this and don't bother. you had your chance to make a halloween game already so why do something now just a few month later. rather care about that christmas competition secret santa thingy you just started here on dc.
ha, thanks alot for your comment, well this was originally planned to be a little xmas gift for the fellows on pixelation network, but it seems I fell on the right little topic

Me too, only in 6th grade. That and Where in the World is Carmen San Diego. Those games were awesome. We had one Apple ][e and had to gather 'round and take turns playing it.

Apparently that picture uses 5 colours. But for some reason my screenshot uses 6?
I only started this after people failed to post in your compo thread and assumed there was no interest. But maybe TDC is just much slower than it used to be
Most of the work I've been doing has been kind of "behind the scenes", so I have nothing to show for it but an array full of numbers.
I'm making steady progress with the random map generator though:
Obviously still need to add all the decor, items, enemies, etc.
It is solid, in that it always creates playable maps, with the rooms all connected to one another.
There are still a few things to improve though - in particular, I don't like the zig-zag corridors or double-walls (not visible in the screenshot). And then I need to fill it up with "stuff"...
I'm not working on anything else at the moment - although I may convert this to use higher-resolution, full color graphics (it would be a shame not to, considering the code would all be the same, and that's the difficult / time-consuming part).
Anyway, I look forward to seeing what you and everyone else come up with.

Which thread were you referring to as the one with all of the oldie members? I might be interested in reading that.
I actually did a tiny game for the old Total Klik competition. It was just a silly little volleyball-type game called Slime Ball (or possibly Slimeball, I'm not sure). Wish I still had a copy of it. It ended up being the only game I ever released.
Actually, that's nothing like how a real Gameboy looks. The original Gameboy had poor contrast, but the screen was far more greenish (the colors in yours are very under-saturated). Later versions had colors more similar to your picture, but the contrast was much, much better.
Plus, if you're making it to played on a computer, you're not going to recreate the feel of playing on an actual Gameboy anyway - you may as well make it feel like you're playing through an emulator. In fact, my plan was actually to try and copy VisualBoy Advance, with the logo and name in the titlebar, and the same menu.

It's much more yellowish than that, I believe (or at least, when actually looking at my GB).
Personally, I'm just going to be using greyscales.
Some palettes are grey when played on an emulator, some are yellow, and some are green hen on a real gameboy, just as an example let's have these:

custom made.
So it all depends,

What kind of game is it going to be, a Diablo-like hack and slash? Looks cool!

I haven't decided on too many details yet, but the general concept is a cross between "Rogue" and the board game "Space Crusade".
It will be turn-based, with the player controlling a small squad of marines (about 4 probably). Missions will be randomly generated, with the goal always being to get everyone to the exit alive. And yes, it will be permadeath.
Baddies will be weak but fast, and more will be spawned all the time, so it will generally be a race to reach the exit before you are overwhelmed - however, ammunition will be extremely limited (esp. for the more powerful weapons), so you'll have to explore a bit just to replenish your supplies.
So yeah, the first challenge is choosing a balanced squad - ie. one combining firepower, economy, speed, and specialist skills.
And then you have to balance the potential risks & rewards of your actions during the missions - eg. staying together for protection or spreading out to cover the map quicker, or even leaving one guy behind to die so the rest can escape.

That sounds awesome and very different, keep us appraised!
