It is easy to go off-topic and -like the case was last night- go into 2 pages of conversations about a persons sexuality and how someone looks. This however makes it tiresome for someone to go trough the topic by the end of the year if you just want to check out the pictures. The real you topics are often cleaned up with excess conversations like last years topic. You are free to take a big conversation outside of this topic when it strays to much, you can disagree with this and rebel with every admin decision that annoys you or think that in the end it make sense for this topic to be cleared of excess bagage, even if this means your posts had to be removed.

What you should do is something I've yet to see any other forum site do. Set up some kind of "Off topic reply" which creates a new topic with the post being replied to as the first topic, and the reply being the first reply to the new topic. That post itself will still show up in the topic it was initially created in, but inside the topic it was initially created, a button is created that says "Continued" in red text or something.
And to keep things from getting too messy, have a separate public group on the boards page for "Continued Topics" which have the name of the original post in quotes or something.
It sounds really complex, I know... but actually read it through, it might actually be a decent idea to at least run on a trial basis.
Oi, that sounds awful. O_O I hate threaded comments, waaay too much to read. And there's potential for misunderstanding when someone doesn't reply because they miss the aside.
In other forums I've been to the moderators simply take the off-topic discussion and then creates a new thread for it. It's a lot better than just removing it completely.
