I've visited this site for a while now and I've noticed there are a lot of visitors here but the editors and admins here really aren't working to keep them. The game of the week has become forgotten, the official x-mas compo this year was a joke and was outdone by a mini-compo held on the forum, the downloads page is just becoming more and more cluttered, the forum is empty of features (no paging system, no post numbers, and shadowcaster deleted a bunch of members/old posts so it's impossible to know how many posts anyone has really made)... not to mention that new highball admins have started banning anyone who mentions said problems. *cough*buster*ahem* (Look at the topic titled "IDEA" to see what i'm talking about)
Now.. I may not be the best to undertake this job but I believe it's time for TDC to make a fresh start. I'm pretty good with ASP, I think I have a pretty good idea of what klikkers want in a daily click, and I would be happy to help. If you don't believe TDC is in trouble then just look up a bit. Even the top bar is cluttered with brocken links and sections that are nearly impossible to navigate.
What needs to be done:
The downloads page needs a complete overhaul, seperating games into groups, adding a search by first letter, addig special demo and beta sections, added tutorial section, allow users to choose games that are similar to the game they're adding upon submittion, make the submittion page a LOT more user friendly with suggested codes and linking tips.
The Links page also needs to allow users to search by letter, also there needs to be a "report broken link" button for every submittion that sends the submitter an automated dc mail informing them that the link is down. (this could also be added to the downloads page) only one broken link notice can be sent at a time per submittion to avoid mailbox overflow and the user is given a timelimit to comply (click a link inside the dcmail) implying that the link has been fixed.
Articles are fine but it would be nice if admins could go from article to article and mark certain ones as "editor approved" so that visitors can have a list of useful articles and won't have to wade through so much crap.
The forums need a bit more substance, more stats, maybe even a collection type feature.
Game of the Week should actually be updated and other trusted admins (other than shadowcaster) should be allowed to add them.
Basically what I'm saying it TDC should think about starting fresh while the visitors are still coming.. otherwise i'm sure the number of members joining a day will slowly decrease as the amount of work put in by editors decreases at a parralleled rate....

I would love to be an admin actually, If I were one I would never let this site get out of date(I promise to you right here). But I don't think that this post will change everything. If it does I would be a really good admin though.

it's always bitch, bitch, bitch, isn't it.
strangely enough, we admins do have lives... even circy.
these life things are a problem. you see, they mean we can't be here all the time, and this is where the problem lies. now to address the individual issues raised:
1) gotw - this is completely shadow's jurisdiction and there's nothing anyone else can do to update GOTW. so if shadowcaster misses a week, then it's not our fault.
2) the xmas compo - a joke you say? i'm sure the first prize winner will be laughing when s/he gets his copy of MMF.
3) downloads page - what do you expect? with nearly 15000 registered members and no quality control (so EVERYONE gets a look in, no matter how good or bad their game is) it's bound to get a bit cluttered. but the thumbs up/down system should point you in the right direction.
4) forums - no paging system? why do you want one? and post numbers will just encourage spamming. and i certainly haven't banned anyone for complaining, seeing as this is a democracy and all.
5) fresh start - no one's going to let you recode dc. it works fine as it is. maybe you want to code your own community site? go ahead, we're not stopping you.
and as for your suggestions, yes, all nice little tiny things, but your not suggesting anything major are you? many of your suggestings mean more work for us admins, the links thing could be abused.
you have a few good suggestions but it does mean more work. and work means time. which is something not many of us have.

Your ideas for improving TDC are good, but you didn't have to be so aggressive about it.
The admins only have limited power - nothing to do with the way the site works fundamentally. Also, as Pete the Mattress said, we all have lives. At the moment, my excuse is that I'm on a very slow connection while at home for New Year - normal service will be resumed on the 10th.
Lay off the admins! Any of you ever try running a community site? I have, and it's tough as horse crap. They do a good ob, especially considering how many of thewm there are, and how many of us are here.
Remember, there's a little darkness in all of us... we just express it best.

its true that gotw has been going on for longer than a week (i think) but its not really a problem because the outcome will be the same as that (i hope) when shadowcaster gets around to doing it.(if he does)
"many of your suggestings mean more work for us admins"
Oh sorry, i wouldn't want to threaten you with the idea of work or anything.
I just offered my ideas and help in making the daily click better and get bashed for it. I wasn't saying that YOU should fix it, I would be very happy to do a large section (if not all) of the coding. I can't make my own community site because i don't have the money to pay for hosting and bandwidth... the daily click already has hosting and is in obvious need of help but apparently the current admins are to cocky to take a helping hand. I'm sorry if you are thretened by change, all i want to do is help.
Whatever, i'm sure this Pete Nattress has no idea of what level of help i am offering or even has the slightest concept of what ASP is.. Can I get a reply from a coheirent admin please? I know circy, clubsoft and shadow will know what i'm talking about.
Maybe you should e-mail Shadowcaster or somebody else who can actually do something about what you're suggesting. Posting in the forums is just inviting attacks from threatened admins and other assorted gap-toothed maggots. Like me.
Circy? Coheirent? Hell he's not even coherent let alone coheirent... fool!

Uhn. Well I don't have the ability to achieve ANY of those changes you mentioned Flaw...but I agree that the GOTW is very badly flawed. Tops has been there for about three weeks.

well, flaw, if you had any idea of the amount of work we do already, you might appreciate the concept of devoting even more time to a little website is pretty far out.
if you want to become an admin, talk to shadowcaster. but slagging us off and saying we don't do enough work isn't winning you any favours. in fact i find it pretty damn arrogant.
REAL adminship takes alot of time and effort, but (most of) current admis are just rare visitors with privileges. Hell, i don't even know how to spell that one.
i don't want to complain but hardly ever anything happens when shadow's not around, so what exactly are you admins doing? a front page news every 15 days? 2 accepted downloads a week? huh, bub?
Well there are occasional moments when there are NO GAMES TO BE ACCEPTED.
I visit the DC most days, and take the time to check out any problems and stuff. Whinge whinge whinge, thats all everyone seems to do these days. I've been making my presence felt over the last month with pretty frequent news updates.
Everyone who complains about TDC for unfair reasons, I consider to be spoilt brats. These are the same sorts of people who get angry when they dont get the Christmas presents they want. Want want want. Everyone wants something. We're only human...even me. The TDC is NOT a butler willing to cater to your every whim and desire. It is a library. An interactive resource. Constructive critisism is welcome, but whining and complaining when no-one can get their way really annoys us. We're providing you ALL with a free service, we're only human, and we're doing the best we can. If you don't like it then you can f*ck off and quit complaining. Don't visit this site anymore. TDC is, aside from the Natomic forums, the only place which is holding the community together so they can share games.
I'm personally sick of having to explain a certain topic to you all time and time again (like I dont do front page requests). People SHOULD know that its rude to ask... I'm sick of members who sign up fake accounts just to flood DC. I'm sick of members who try and insult others just to make themselves feel good. I make a point of being sick of all this, but I dont spend the rest of my DC days constantly moaning about it.

One of the first ever community site was run by someone called Pat and it was called Silky's. And I think she got really annoyed with the way people treated the forum so she posted something saying how she was tired of everything. And each sentence began with I'm tired with this... I'm tired with that... I'm tired of...
It was in the timeline section of the site before that got removed. So I probably should have said Pat's last speech or something. C'mon Circy, you should know your click history, I've been doing alot of studying, do you know why? Cuz I want to!
First off, anyone who told Flaw to "fuck off" for suggesting improvements and pointing out real and desperate needs of TDC is an idiot. Really constructive.
Flaw- I wasn't banned for posting IDEA, but the topic was locked. The entire post was a joke.
In the topic IDEA, I suggested we start something like GOTW(acting like I didn't know what it was) because there practically isn't a GOTW anymore and what's left of it sucks. Tons of good games don't even get nominated and horrible games win.
I think the most important things that need to be fixed are dead links and GOTW.
"many of your suggestings mean more work for us admins"
Oh sorry, i wouldn't want to threaten you with the idea of work or anything.
Um... in case you haven't noticed, they do a lot of work, uploading all those games and checking over the previews and articles and forums.
Though I agree it would be better to have the forums with some more stuff, e.g. that top posters thing again (even though it caused major spamming).

I think that there should be some kind of rating system with tha articles. E.g. thumbs system. And why they can't make ascending and descending sort system for download's score. That would be nice.
I still to the majority of coding here, but if people dont make suggestions into what they want I cant code them. If anyone does have any suggestions, either DC Mail me, or email csdc@uk.hn.org. The downloads section I'm going to recode as its running far too slowly and I'm not a fan of how it looks and works, alot of other pages are starting to show their age so need recoding aswell. The main problems with these ideas is that alot of modifications have to be made to the database which is now getting rather huge, and I'm on a lovely old 56k.
It seems to me more the people side than the code side at the moment, which unfortunately I cant do much about, but that aside, If anyone wants features or wants to make any suggestions, notify of any bugs and such, just contact me, I'm more than willing to give good ideas a go.
The revolution begins! Good job, Ashman. Soon, the people shall revolt to point where even the admins can't handle them. They'll nuke the place and turn it all into a wasteland. We shall rise from the ashes and rule of the leftover mutants. BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!
But seriously, Flaw, the only 'competent' coders here are Clubsoft, ShadowCaster, Rikus, and maybe even Andi. The others are just their gestapo sergeants, who just stop the fights and kill the troublemakers.
Clubsoft:
1. Thumbs up system for the articles. People have been begging for it for months, maybe even years.
2. Get rid of the DC rating system. It brings nothing but trouble.
3. If you really must reward people, just make a popularity rating system much like the old DC when people could just vote on each other.
4. There's not much of a problem with the downloads section. Focus on my 3 other suggestions first .

Jesus christ... well, first of all, ash, check your rating. second of all, I'm faithful to the admins. They're doing the best they can. Wanna boss the admins? Then pay for the site. As the great sage Jonw0g once said: "Stop fucking complaining". And pete, circy, shadow, clubsoft, andi, rikus, wong, and any other admins, you're handling this ashman revolt rather well. And my friend's mom's sister was killed by nazis.Pete, circy, shadow, clubsoft, andi, rikus,or wong never killed anyone in their life Now, to get a point:

Karnage is right.
Ashman: Shut your pie hole Ashman you stupid newbie... go back to Newtopia! Lol, you said that to me. Now your rating is newbie. Is that fun? Good work, Pete!

Btw, Karnage I didn't call half those admin nazis ever! Pete is the main offender and if I'm not mistaken but I'm sure there are plenty of friends, mums, sisters that were killed by american soldiers or british soldiers in Germany as well. We said Nazis not killers, not all nazis are killers they just like to go 'Achtung' and dominate the world...

ffs ashman, learn some fucking history you idiot. the nazis delibrately exterminated 6 million innocent people. i hope for your sake that you were trying to be funny.
Pete and Circy I think you overreact a bit. Flaws post do not seem agressive to me. Its more his own oppinion of what the situation is, and then hes truely offering his help.
On a more general note I find it strange thats TDC admins holds a very conservative oppinion to anything that smells remotely like a change to the TDC site.
I know you propably spend considerable time here and try to do your best. I am grateful for that. However one should never discard a suggestion right off. At least read it and evaluate its value. Would it bring something to the community? Would it help the member? The admins? If you are not the ones to do something about it ... why not bring it to the right person? Surely not all know that Clubsoft is the person to ask.
If the amount of work is too big simply recruit more admins ... it really IS as simple as that.
Clubsoft. I think you should make a thread asking members what they would like to change. Then use that as inspiration when you decide what the "new" TDC should look/be like.
I think Flaw has a good idea, and half of you guys are shooting it down without a second thought. Even you Pete Natress, in your first post you struck out viciously, hell the way Flaw sounds he looks as if he has got shit together unlike half of the admins here in DC. His ideas would make this awesome site even more awesome, but you guys of course get sidetracked. Anyway I just think you guys shouldn't dismiss this in a heartbeat.
What I have to say to those who prefer to shoot down the ideas posted here is this:
This site is kept afloat by community submittions, community interaction, and community donations. ShadowCaster neither pays for nor does he own any part of this website. The site is registered under Rikus Kras' name and payed for with dontations taken from Rikus' personal Paypal account. If the community pays for a site and keeps it alive then shouldn't they have some sort of a say of how that site should be run? When Rikus was head admin he recongized this and appointed people to work on TDC that he thought would help keep it alive for newer generations of klikkers. I may have only visited this site on a weekly basis or so from school computers at the time but now that I am a registered member (as of last month) I have started to realize how great things were before Rikus hung up his administrative belt. Changes were slow but consistiant on the site. If something was wrong Rikus made sure it was fixed. Now as the needs of the community grow there isn't a headadmin around to make sure things get done.
I simply suggested a small list of fixes that would not only make the site easier to navigate but I also added in suggestions to help admins keep the site clean and in working order. The ability for users to be able to Report Broken Links, Games posted in Incorrect Categories, and Released Previews would releave admins of the heavy weight of moderatng and searching. The other day I received a DC mail that said the following:
"First time I saw this topic [TDC Needs Serious Help] 7/1/2004 and I was really shocked about the admins' and others' answers. I couldn't believe they didn't understand that you offered them your help. You saw many TDC's problems and gave good examples to solve them. You're really right. Admins of this site (how many there's them? 4? 5? 6?) are only telling that they haven't got any free time, because they spend it no TDC."
He went on to introduce:
"I'm admin of one of the polish community's website "Fabryka Gier" about klik and I decided to write a report about your topic on my site."
Oh... I hope TDC admins won't be angry if I refresh this topic.
I'd like to ask admins how are the changes going? I saw some of them (grades for article wasn't here, was it?).
Well, I think ShadowCaster's coming back to say something about rules made this topic a little too old :|
If someone is interested about translation of that article, which Flaw wrote down here, mail me (to make sure I should make it EN-languaged)! But know that was wrote 8 I 2004 (before going to change anything by the admins)
