I'm most likely going to get the Nintendo DS because it's coming out at christmas time which is when I am going to Malaysia and it will be cheaper over there.
BOTH CONSOLES FEATURE 3D RENDERING!
With the PSP being as powerful (if not more) as a ps2
most likely i wont be getting either, ive kinda gone off the Hand-held consoles, but if theres a new zelda game released on it.........ill definitley get it
if i was to get one id get a Nintendo DS, Nintendo all the way!
Both consoles WILL fail. As we saw with the N-GAGE, no matter how powerful your machine is, everyone who wants hald held gaming has a GBA or simply can't afford a gba or anything else.
Yes sony has a massive user base, but the ones who want to play games on the train have GBAs.
The DS on the other hand is doomed because of its quirkiness, anyone remember the virtual boy? Even though nintendo is cool.
The only machine there that is likely to succeed is the "Shigeru Miyamoto". This is the first time a game machine has been incorporated into a crazy japanese guy who owns EAD, and such is bound to succeed. And photos of the special limited edition "Zelda Shigsy" look cool.
funny i was talking with my mate about this last night.
i strongly believe the PSP to flop and the DS to be very good. Why? let me first say that i was looking forward to the PSP (if it at least plays portable PS1 games im happy) and dreading the DS (gimmicky?).
but now my mind is set. There are so many faults with the PSP. ie; battery life! 8 hours IF the disc dosnt load? 2 if its always loading from disc (UMD, 1.8gb, similar size to minidisc [big!])? that really is pathetic. Also i dont understand the MP3 side of it. it promises 10 hours with MP3? 1) you cant record onto that new CD they've made. 2) 32mb RAM is good enough for what? 5 mp3s? 3) they will probably make you use the memory stick slot which is blaintently expensive cuz hey! its sony! but Memory Stick is also huge, hell you might as well get an i-Bead200 MP3 player for cheaper (14 hours battery life too)
Its also bloody huge. To say this is sony's only handheld offering its kinda sad.
the only good points i can see is the wireless abilities but GBA can do that (new adapter coming out)and DS and probably GBA2. Also that screen on the PSP is gonna get destroyed in most peoples pockets, if it fits.
The DS sounds much better than i first anticipated. The bottom screen is touch sensitive, it has microphone and wireless capabilities, plays regular GBA games, has pokemon, mario, metroid and zelda games coming out (Pokemon with wireless abilities is the perfect combination :|)... but if that fails, hell the GBA2 comes out in 2005/6
what it seems like to me is Nintendo are genuinly trying to put some new never-before used features in a handheld console yet Sony (apart from the CD drive) are just making something less-cutting edge.
all the DS has to do is get Zelda 64 and Mario 64 and its a sure winner
The reason why the N-Gage failed is because there were no good games for it.
Sonic-N: This was already released for GBA. The strange screen proportions make it almost impossible to see where you're going.
Tomb Raider: You call that 3D? The textures aren't even mip-mapped! Besides, this game was probably already released elsewhere.
Tony Hawk's Pro Skater: If you want a Tony Hawk gameo on your system, at least do the third one. I mean, the first game's pretty obsolete right now.
As for the DS, I'll want to buy that when it comes out. The N64 was pretty fine with 3D (Although frame-rates were crummy), although it really excelled in 2D.

1. Waaay too expensive. You're basically paying for a PsOne all over again
2. Its a huge inconvenience when trying to change games. You have to unscrew the N-Gage to take the cart out, put a new one in, and screw it back together again.
I'm looking forward to the PSP more than anything else. The Nintendo DS looks more like a gimick than anything else -- 2 screens, woohoo. It's 3D effects are about on par with a Nintendo 64, which is good, but pails in comparison to the power of the PSP. And before you say anything about specs not meaning anything, take a look at the PSP demo reel (the in-game graphics look to sit somewhere above a Dreamcast and just a bit below the current generation of consoles), then compare it to the screens of Mario 64 x4 and Metroid Hunters... it should be plain as the mud on your face which system is more powerful. This isn't to say that both cannot co-exist.
Now then, some of you mentioned the N-Gage failing. Well, that's because Nokia doesn't know anything about gaming, it had a miserable launch line-up, and it cost what... 300 friggin' dollars?!? On top of that it was nothing more than an ugly cell-phone that had sex with a Sega Saturn. DS and PSP won't fall victim to that. Nintendo knows it's audience -- the existing Gameboy fanbase (DS is backwardly compatable), and kids. DS's relative lack of power compared to PSP will likely be reflected in a lower price point (I'm guessing $99) which is more accessable to kids. PSP, on the other hand, is being targeting at the older crowd -- the new Walkman of sorts. The installed base of the Playstation product line is something like 25 million in America alone. The Sony name is a pretty big seller...
Now I could be wrong -- I won't deny that. Sega had a vastly superior product to the Gameboy back in the day with their GameGear. It fell flat, despite sales numbers of the Genesis that reached nearly 20 million units. Times have changed tho -- gaming became mainstream and cool with the Playstation, and gamers that were 10 when the playstation launched are in college now, with a larger budget, and want gaming on the go. Nintendo, as I mentioned earlier, is associated with kids -- like or not, bad thing or not, they are. PSP can appeal to this older generation of gamers, and co-exist alongside the Nintendo DS since they won't be competing directly.
If nothing else, Sony has a killer line up of software going for the PSP that will get it out the door fast: Devil May Cry, Metal Gear Acid, Grand Turismo 4, Tales of Eternia, NFL and NBA Street, Need For Speed Underground, Viewtiful Joe, and an unannounced title from Square just to name a few.
Oh, and Assault Andy... if you're going to post a screen of the PSP, at least get your shit together and post one of the new design...
Ive always supported sony and i still do.The psp is going to be the best portable gaming device yet.The Ds looks good but you know its going to be really expensive. Also sony hasn't realy made any mistakes on thier systems as far i know besides making the ps2 have only 2 controler ports instead of 4.But as you can see the gaming industry is playing follow the leader and sony is currently the leader and i think it will remain that way.Any way why would i pay alot for a system thats as powerful as the 64 when i can pay less or the same amount for a system thats just as powerful as dreamcast with better games on its line up imagine playing gt4 hendheld...*drools* Also the psp will be able to fit in your pocket unless your wereing really really tight pants.
yea the DS seems gimmicky but hell my sony-loving mate has pretty much given up after reading the stats and looking at it logically. It seems to just be another all-in-wonder machine that costs the same amount as all built-in devices but together but half the quality. ie. N-Gage?
what makes me think it should NOT exist at all is the measly battery life.. i mean cummon? 2-8 hours? that really is quite crap. if the DS, even GBA2 has a similar battery life id say the same about them too im not being biased.
but if stats are your thing; the GB destroyed the GameGear, the PS1 legally murdered the N64, the GB name alone is the best selling portable console. but meh. alls far in love and war.
If they rerelease SOTN for that new GBA, im getting it. But im not paying for the psp, looks like the buttons will get jammed way to easy, notice how thin and close they are to the actual system, thats how the buttons on my digital camera+MP3 player+ CD player were, all the buttons jammed after short amount of use.

Ok, half the info in this thread is wrong. Let me clarify.
Psp will only be out in Japan by the end of the year. It has also dropped a couple features such as the built in Wi-Fi, and the Mp3 player. These will both be avaliable at realease time as an add on card. Sony did this to drop the Psp price to a competitive level. $150 is the launch price for the Psp.
NDS will be out this year, play gameboy advance games, and have a 150 price tag also. This, at launch means that NDS is going to be the stronger system. There are a sick amount of developers signed up for it with about 20 games to be released for the DS within the first month of release.
NOTE: The Psp is NOT as powerful as a PS2. It's slightly more powerful than the ps1, sony has just figured out some texture wrapping technology to take away "jaggies" which is why the screens also look more like PS2.
Super mario DS: Mario 64 - Expect to see it sometime.
Psp won't have a huge launch title list, it's looking like it's going to be in the 6 to 7 title range.
The short term winner is going to be Nintendo, their system can do more at launch and is coming out sooner than the competition. The long term winner we'll need to wait and see.
I think slightly more powerful than a PSX is a bit of an understatement. Take a look at the in-game videos and try to tell me it can't hold it's own against at least the Dreamcast. As for the prices... $150 sounds reasonable (hell, I was guessin' $200 for the PSP).
As for the battery life... anyone heard of rechargeable batteries? Besides, why would you need more than 8 hours of battery life? It's not like you'd ever play the system for 8-hours straight without recharging anyway.
a maximum of 8 hours battery is good? lol people critically flamed the iPod for that, people praised the SP for its 14 hour play. it dosnt seem bad now but it will be in real life
Yeah, PSP may be more powerful, but it probably won't have any good games for it. It would just have dumb stuff like military sims and all that other crap. I'm just into pure action. Sony doesn't understand that.

Yes, slightly more powerful than a playstation.
The small resolution means that the gfx processor doesn't need to make huge polygons, which frees up several cycles for it to run through. Combine that with the new "wrapper" tech, and you have PS2 esque graphics. No I don't think the Psp could run dreamcast games without major slowdown, but as the home and portable consoles are fundamentally different, this isn't a fair comparison. The memory bandwidth on the Psp is small, I believe it's like 16 megs a second, now this is for ALL memory usages(sound, Graphics, AI, etc.) Obviously there are some limitations, but that's true of any portable.
Craps, I'm an old man!

My thoughts were exactly the same as Jay White's. I was orignially looking forward to the PSP, because of the lack of information about the DS. But now that all is revealed the PSP looks sort of sucky compared to the DS.
Something to note: 9 out of 9 previous competitors in the handheld market have fallen to Nintendo's dominance in the area (figure taken from sources available to me because I work at a game store). Sony's the 10th now, and I personally think the DS will come out on top. I don't think the PSP will neccessarily crumble to nothing and be a complete waste of time, but it could happen and my bet is that the DS will be vastly more popular.
Dustin, maybe you should take care of your stuff so it doesn't get trashed. CD's come in jewel cases for a reason ... maybe you should use them.
I'd like to see both systems do well (No fanboy here... I own 3 Sega systems, an Xbox, a PS2, and 3 Nintendo systems), but right now -- with the information I have so far (specs, videos, what we know of the software line up and system design), I'm going to put my money on the PSP. While history does hold that, as Rick put it, 9 out of 9 competitors to the Gameboy have failed, history also shows that Sony has completely dessimated the N64 and GameCube in terms of sales. I really think the market is ready to support 2 systems tho (after all, it's fully supporting 3 consoles for the first time ever). Competition spurs superior game design and dictates lower prices. As I've said, the two systems co-exist without destroying the other. DS is clearly aimed at kids, while the PSP is clearly aimed at the high school and college crowd. The game design reflects this, the hardware design reflects, and likely the prices will reflect this.
Oh, and Chicken... I appreciate your efforts toward keeping this debate intellectual, but you did goof up a couple of things. Porting refers to recoding a game to make it work on another platform (what is different is the ease of porting -- which I'm sure is what you meant to say, probably just worded it the wrong way), and the Sonic E3 demo was shown on DS, not PSP.
Kinda depends on what you do with it actually... I mean, it wouldn't be hard for a developer to just make the action on one screen and make a map on the bottem or use it for stats and such without really doing much to change the code. You've got a point tho when it comes to software that will truly take advantage of the duel-screens.
It is a known fact that a disc will last no-where as near as long as a cartridge.
Discs can get scratched easy, you have to handle them in a certain way, while a cartridge you can grab onto any way you like!
Also another downfall of sony's, yes they may have some of your favourite games from Playstation BUT you will have to Re-buy them if you want to play them on your PSP because the PSP uses "UMD" discs.
while with the DS you can play your already owned GBA games.
PSP's Specs are alot better then DS, but the innovation of the DS will surely conquer over it: Voice Recognition, Dual screens, touch screen e.t.c
and lets not forget the DS ISNT the new Game Boy, the next Game Boy is in the making so the 2D-Handheld market is still in Nintendos favour.
with the DS you can play both 2D and 3D, PSP will most likely be all 3D games.
PSP will most likely have a library of ports and shitty games.
And last but not least, we all know that Nintendo have some of the best game designers in the entire world, and lets not forget that Nintendo has been in the Handheld business alot longer then sony!
Brazil? never seen it, i might check it out though.
Chicken14528: That was my own personal thought, and i didnt base it on a source because i couldnt be bothered searching all over the internet to back up that one statement.
its funny that Sony's biggest rival in the handheld market will be a spin off handheld machine from Nintendo. they still have the GBA2 coming out, and if stats (like Chicken) are your game then why dont you just buy that cuz it will be much faster
BUT smart people dont think like that. smart people dont want a half-assed platformer which came out on the GC over a year ago (Viewtifull Joe, though it was fun there isnt much too it).
dont forget, Sega was a competitor in the handheld market years ago. just like Sony is today, its an incredibly popular company with a statistically superior system. in the blue corner the GB sat there playing Mario Land 1 and 2 with a few rounds of Tetris but still it won. You may say the battery life is good at 8 hours max but the Gamegear had just a few hours battery life too (around 4-6 hours) which paled compared to the 14 hour GB. it smells like history is going to repeat itself, if not, nevermind! GBA2 is coming!
also i hate the disc idea, when i had a minidisc player i only carried around 5 MD's at a time because of thier size, GBA carts are half the size of them and 4 years older than UMD! and can take a huge battering. Also CD's do degrade over time, my MD in thier protected cases are wearing out after 4 years, spots are appearing on the recording layer, same goes for PC-CD's, DVD's etc...
I would not be suprised seeing a 256mbyte DS cart coming out containing Ocarina of Time, or something similar. Widely regarded as the greatest game of all time
but as ive said before, time will tell. i just find it quite funny that some die hard Sony fanboy mates of mine were converted with the GBA SP and now think the PSP is going to flop.
another thing which i think shows a typical but incredible nintendo cliche, is that they are really putting things which have never before been seen in such a device. voice recognition, touch screen, DUAL screen! wifi, etc. nintendo wont talk about such things with stats and stuff they will just give the package. its technology for people who couldnt care less.
i dont want to buy a PSP and then buy a load of addons just to make it equal to a DS, Sony are notorious for expensive accessories, even the stand alone product! it adds to cost, weight and size rather than it all being in one package.
*Laughs at chicken* you just keep making up that info pal...
After seeing your blatent plagiarism of IGN.com I can now fully say that you are as misinformed as IGN. More thought needs to go into the game design, IF the developer feels that they want to use the extra features. If you don't want to use the mike then you don't have to.
Your "ports" comment was probably one of the stupidest things I've seen all day, thanks for laugh. A port IS reworking the engine code, or sometimes building a new engine for an old game. If you don't want to use the 2nd screen it's not written in stone that you have to, but it IS there.
I never said that sony got rid of the Wi-Fi completely, it's now an ADD-ON card. If you look, you'll see that the Psp has a small PCcard like slot on the side.
Note that Viewtiful Joe was a 3d game given a sidescrolling camera view.
I have a grudge against them, They stole Some news from me that I painstakingly ran through a translator to get. And They have been wrong many, many times in the past. They just cover those mistakes up later.
It was for the Tales of Symphonia
I got into Konami of Japans financial report and translated it, but I got the subtitle of the game wrong. In fact, IGN got their's wrong in the same exact way about 2 days later.
