AGwaK2: DA is a platformer inspired by Super Mario Brothers 2 for the NES. It was made in MMF2 and likes to eat your CPU for breakfast. My sloppy coding could be at fault here, but I can't say for sure.

No time for vacations when you're the Imp King's arch-chancellor, oh no! How about you go on a quest to find the king's girlfriend's lost crown instead? And shoot stars at stuff? And kick some koala butt along the way?

Features:

-21 levels (secret ones included)
-New moves to learn along the way
-Original soundtrack done by Sean Cameron (thanks, guy!)
-No kitties at all

There are a bunch of known problems. You can find out about those and more in the game's help.

If the game plays slow, try fullscreen and 256 colors. Some effects look buggy in 8 bit, but the game should be faster.

I take back what I said about the gameplay. The running power up made the gameplay a lot more interesting.

I've been looking forward to this game so much! It's really fantastic

You definitely have your style bernie! Love it, though the gfx are still a lil confusing in places where colours are too similar But that's a teeny minor drawback from something so great. Thumbs up.

It looks like a game with a kitty without a kitty.

Posted by 29th November, 2006

It runs really slowly on my computer... Though it looks awesome!

Posted by Ski 29th November, 2006

0_0 What computer do you have? lol

Posted by bernie[FA] 29th November, 2006

Unfortunately, the game isn't very efficient. I gotta make more global code next time. All the enemies had their own behaviours and stuff, bogs down the speed immensely.

If it plays slow, try using the 256 color mode in fullscreen or windowed. Playing it Windowed 2x makes it extra slow, best to avoid that on slower machines.

OMG. This might be the Bernie game I've been waiting for. I've just played the first couple of levels so far, but great introduction and gameplay. I'll play this through as soon as I've got time.

Bugger... just got to the Aurora Road stage and found I need 800 of those gem things. I only have 200!

Posted by gustav 30th November, 2006

bernie is evil!! though finding big gems takes a bit of searching, it really isn't that difficult.

Posted by bernie[FA] 30th November, 2006

Go, Mr. Chris! You can do it! 1 big gem evaluates to 50 small ones, that means you'll need... wow, 12! There are plenty easy ones to find, though. Also, keep watching for different-looking tiles and shoot 'em! You can also get plenty of them with the wallrun/walljump.

Lucid - Thanks!

I'll stop by regularly to see if anyone needs help with the game.

Ah well. I spent three hours visiting Stage 2.4 and hitting the first four blocks repeatedly

Posted by bernie[FA] 30th November, 2006

Oh no! There's one such block at the end of the first area in stage 2-4, to the right of the door. But make sure to bring a few stars!

How do I defeat the mech with the ginger in it?

Posted by gemugemu 1st December, 2006

Hi There !
This game is so good !
Love the atmosphere, graphics,sounds,...
Congratulations to the FallenAngels Team !

Posted by bernie[FA] 1st December, 2006

Fenner: He does a special move where he reveals a weak point every now and then. His machine opens up a little and you need to shoot a star in there.

gemugemu: Thank you!

Excellent game, Bernie. So far I've loved the puzzles and secret areas which are quite clever (Like getting the bomb onto the raising/lowering platform to blow up the blue blocks on the top floor), although the movement and physics are somewhat frustrating.

Runs fine, as well.

Posted by bernie[FA] 1st December, 2006

Dustin - Thanks! I didn't want the movement to be too easy, but there's always a chance I've overdone it. It's hard for me to look at my own game from a player's perspective sometimes, especially while playtesting. And none of the testers seemed to have a problem with the movement, so I didn't see a need to change it. Gonna try to make sure this won't happen in my future games.

Phizzy - Haven't heard of that game before. The internet tells me it's a platformer by Sunsoft for the Genesis/Megadrive and the screenshots look like fun, so I'll give it a go.

"Bugger... just got to the Aurora Road stage and found I need 800 of those gem things. I only have 200!"

I reached this spot and was instantly sad. I hate it when games require me to go back through levels to continue the game.

I wouldn't take the thumbs up away, but it still made me a sad panda.

Posted by The Chris Street 2nd December, 2006

I remember Bubble and Squeak, although I didn't like it much. Too frustrating for my liking.

I have over 800 gems now Aurora Road is evil.

Posted by The Chris Street 3rd December, 2006

I isn't lying. Halfway through the stage theres a moving wall that chases you, and tries to squash you, but you have to use it in order to finish the area. Bernie will confirm

Posted by bernie[FA] 3rd December, 2006

I confirm partially! You don't NEED to use it. There's another way: You can get rid of an enemy on a platform and run/jump from there.

Posted by robin90 3rd December, 2006

Superb Game play with great sounds. A pity the game play is slow. Beaten the game. Have to admit that last few levels are quite diffcult. Managed to reach 80 % but there are some crytals I cannot get and a magical lamp I cannot find. Nevertheless, Great game with nice ending........ Is there a sequel ?

Posted by JMT 4th December, 2006

Beat the game. Still trying to get that damned treasure personally. Haven't yet figured out how to beat the jumping, enlarging fellow.

Posted by bernie[FA] 4th December, 2006

robin90: Thanks! Did you play at 60 FPS? I found 60 to be almost too fast for my liking, so I kept the option to switch between 52/60, with 52 being the standard speed. There's no sequel yet, but who knows what the future may bring.

JMT: If you're talking about the 2nd boss in the secret level, here's a hint: Make him as big as possible until he sort of explodes and shrinks again. Repeat this ~4 times.

Posted by DaVince 4th December, 2006

I downloaded this some time ago. I still didn't play it. Shame on me!

Posted by DaVince 4th December, 2006

Superb! Me likey!

Posted by Fifth 6th December, 2006

Hmm, that secret cube guy has me stumped.
I can kill him without much difficulty now, but it doesn't appear to accomplish anything.

Posted by Fifth 6th December, 2006

Oh, and I think I found a bug.
There's a blueish block that blocks you off about halfway through 2-2, where the other blocks start falling. I was able to walk right through it.

Posted by renkin 6th December, 2006

This game is simply awesome. It's just about everything that defines a great platformer. I recently got to what I believe is the final boss. Haven't figured out what to do with him yet, but I'll keep trying.

Posted by renkin 6th December, 2006

Ok, I beat him. Great game, Bernie. You really did it this time. From the title screen to the green vomit, it's close to perfection. Sean did a great job with the music, too. I especially like the title song. And you got the humor right, as usual. "Please hit the button on that console, will you? ... Thank you." That might classify as a spoiler, but I doubt it. =

Posted by bernie[FA] 7th December, 2006

Fifth: Thanks, gonna look into that bug!

Lucid/DaVince: Good to hear you liked it! :3

Posted by Fifth 7th December, 2006

Kweh-ha! Just 100%'ed it! And I must say that was VERY strange, but very amusing.
An excellent game on the whole. It had a great number of nice secrets. And your moving platforms were quite outstanding!

One more (very slight) bug: the secret level with that cube guy? Its in-level gem count is a little inaccurate.

Posted by renkin 7th December, 2006

Holy crap! I'm only at 81% so far. Indeed a lot of the secrets are really fun. They're varied in a nice way, too. And yeah, I love how the moving platforms and everything else interact in a consistent way with enemies and objects, and how that's used for puzzle solving sometimes.

I also seem to have found a bug (but I have no idea what spawned it). In "Beneath Ordok" I have 3/3 big crystals, but on the map it says 4/4.

Posted by renkin 7th December, 2006

85%...

Posted by bernie[FA] 8th December, 2006

Fifth: Thanks! Gonna look into that.

renkin: 85% is all you need for the secret level! The diamond count on the map is different because it also counts the heart diamond you can get there. However, the level should also show this. Gonna change it, thanks!

Good man!

However, I wish you'd have read the game's readme more carefully because then you'd have learned that the cutscenes, especially the pre-boss ones, are skipable! :3

Posted by Pariah Leviticus 8th December, 2006

Totally great game! It brings back a very SNES feel. Nostalgia is God. Out.

Posted by renkin 8th December, 2006

Bernie: I actually have 93% now, and 42/42 crystals! But I haven't found the secret level you're talking about, I think... unless... I think I'll try killing the evil man again.

By the way, if the heart diamond in Beneath Ordok counts as a diamond, shouldn't the one in Faraway Star do as well?

Posted by renkin 8th December, 2006

Oh, and it's apparently Orknok, not Ordok... what the hell did I get that from?

Posted by bernie[FA] 9th December, 2006

renkin: That one doesn't count anymore because it's not in one of the normal levels.

Your percentage will be 100% once you've finished all secret levels. 3 are on the worldmap, one is in Faraway Star. Good luck!

Posted by renkin 9th December, 2006

Oh my, I've actually managed to miss three secret exits in the normal levels? There are those empty spots on the world map where levels would seem to fit. I guess I'll start looking around those first.

Posted by bernie[FA] 9th December, 2006

The two levels with the book and the lamp in it also count as secret levels, so you should have found at least one of them. One of them is called 'Hidden Holy Hills', ther other one 'The Nothing'.

Posted by renkin 9th December, 2006

Yep. I had The Nothing, and I recently found Hidden Holy Hills, as well. Cool level. 96% now.

Posted by Taofeld 11th December, 2006

Seems you don't have to have two versions of the game saved to support multiple color modes.

Hey, cool! That's something to remember for future projects. Thanks!

Posted by renkin 12th December, 2006

Yay! I found Aurora Secret. (I had also apparently missed a certain sign that made the secret levels a bit easier to find. )

Posted by Farmer 20th August, 2007

This. Game. Is. Awesome. Seriously (Stangely enough, it's because of this game I bought a game pad)
