AGwaK4: Herbert's Island Adventure

Release Candidate!!

Yes. The game may still have a few issues, and I'm gonna try to fix them if I can. I played through it a buncha times and so did a friend, so let's hope for the best!!

Story? What Story?!

Oh Herbert! Your house has been exploded and blob things are nibbling on the flowers in your garden. What are you gonna do?! Give the responsible party a real good scolding and maybe a good walloping if they're not too buff, of course!

And maybe you can help out an old friend, too...

The Game is a Platformer (again)

Ok. We know how this works by now. We pick a level on the map, collect as many of the hidden coins, bells or whatever as we can and beat a few bosses along the way.

In this game, enemies are disposed of by using Herb's spin attack and some other moves we learn about later on.

There are a bunch of secrets and 2 endings in the game. It's also a pretty short affair because I never seem to have enough time for this stuff.

How to play!

Arrow Keys: Moving
Space: Jump
CTRL/ALT: Attack
ESC/Space: Menu Navigation

The keys can be customized in the startup dialog window.

Tech Stuff for the Neckbeards

This game was made in Unity3D. It uses 3d sprites and 2d tilesets. The 3d aspect is pretty new to me and my model work is a bit all over the place, but it seems to work.

Thanks for playing!

It's funny how you basically make the same game over and over again
What's interesting is that you use Unity3D now, because for some reason I'm looking into that right now as well.
What can I say about this after playing for about 30minutes? It's good, but the bad 3d models give it a very bad PS1 feeling in my opinion. I think the game would have looked way better if you would stick to sprites (there's plenty of good tutorials for that for Unity3d). Besides that it's a good first try. It's a "Bernie game" but with less features and bad 3d models, but a solid A for the effort.

These games are relatively simple to make and always are a good choice when dealing with new engines or frameworks. If you connect familiar things with unfamiliar ones, you'll find learning something much easier. AGwaK3 and 4 fall into this category - Flash and Unity. Same goes for 3d. It makes no sense to stick to 2d just because it would look better when I also want to learn 3d.

I tried big-scale projects with a new dev environment, it never works out. So let's not do that.

yeh dark and strange times. thats exactly how i feel. i feel like 90% of the people on here don't even remember faind, acoders or natomic. i miss the days of big click groups.

I don't understand the graphics IMHO your pixel art is a lot nicer than this. Ive said it already, but this just seems really inconsistant. I actually prefer the orange cat-like enemy to the main character.

The engine seems solid enough, just think it could look a lot prettier, and Im pretty sure you're capable of it

Very cool game!

I only played the first level, but the engine was well made.

I played it in the highest resolution, and the 2D graphics were very blurry, I think you should bump the texture resolution up a tad and it would look a whole lot better!

It has a similar feel as that Super Mario remake on the Wii. 3D mixed with 2D assets.

Adam: Well, that's alright. I like trying different things. Doing another pixel thing would feel like standing still to me. I can handle both AS3/Flash and Unity3d now, which is what matters to me the most.

UrbanMonk: Thanks for playing! I originally made the game for mobile phones, some textures remained a bit on the low res side. I can fix some of them, but a few are at the mobile limit already.

I guess its not just the pixel thing though. Ive seen you do some really nice hand-drawn art on your website in the past ;_;

I'm not sure if I can do what you are expecting. These things already take so much time and energy as it is.

So how come with pixel art you can make a nicely proportioned character and know what looks good, but with this it's seemingly different. I dont want to offend, but its not just about the type of art, its the design side of it too, knowing what looks good, which colours work, sprite proportions etc. You seemed to put all of that into practice with pixel art, the same applies to this kind too

A different type of visual design or medium works differently. I can't be insta-good at something and will have to learn as I go along, and I don't want to limit myself to pixels only, as much as I like them.

You'll have to give it time :3 Maybe you'll like something out of my next game-things.

nvm.

Haha, that's one way to end a conversation. I know you mean well, but learning this stuff takes time. Here, have an e-hug!

I think this was really well done! And I admire you for diving right into a new program that you want to learn. You're right that the best way to learn something new is to use familiar characters and start with something simple.

I think when it comes to 3D art, it's very easy to make a good game look very cheap and ugly, just because the models aren't as polished or what I think in your case the animations look clunky. I can understand that you were just testing the waters with this, and I personally think your models look fine. They are no masterpieces, but I've seen way worse from professional game studios in the PS1 era (FF7 anyone?). I think if you could find a way to have better, more fluid and maybe more realistic looking animations, the visual quality of the game would improve immensely.

Thanks Hill Gigas and Blue66. I have some issues with 3D modelling, there are certain aspects that make it hard for me to 'get' it. Like gettting the faces/polygons look smooth. Practice...!
