The point of this competition is to spur creativity and get people making fun games for fun (without worrying particularly about extension x and getting bogged down in "big game fever"/creating a super duper realistic engine) which is what used to happen all the time in the old days, and even so there was a fair few gems produced in that era.
Full rules are:
* Runtime rescaling or rotation is not allowed.
* Only 1 layer.
* Seeing as crude fast loops can be created via loop unrolling there is no problem in their use. This will be only exception in terms of extensions from the original TGF.
* It is vastly preferred that all level data is stored internally. But you are free to use the INI object with TGF 1 limitations (64k load I believe). Perhaps a percentage of the presentation mark will go towards "TGF1 era spirit" .
* All of the ink effects from TGF1 are valid, but HWA and HWA pixel shaders are disallowed.
* Try to be efficient with alterable values as possible. No one is going to be strict about this, but try to keep in the spirit of TGF era game making.
* 256 or less active objects.
* No trigonometry functions are allowed.
* Submission should be via a download page submitted to the Daily Click. Funtition entry: Game Name. Upon submission please pm myself with a link to source, should the judges feel it is needed.
Try not to worry too much about exactly meeting every single one of TGF's more obscure limitations, and make some great fun games for fun
Deadline is the 12 th of August.
I believe if you want to keep it in TGF spirit keep it in TGF spirit.
3 Variables per Active (+ fixed)
16 Global Variables (+Score and Lives)
NO FAST LOOP
External files via Picture, Vitalize, INI and audio/video objects.
That is what old TGF could do easily and I got Xplosiv version of 1.04
I'll make a Competition version and a Standard version because I already started doing some crazy parallax background scrolling.
Kind of like how the Amiga EGA could only show one layer and so most games only have gradient backgrounds but Amiga AGA chipset games could do much more. So some games had two versions.
"No trigonometry functions are allowed". How does basic math not fit into the TGF spirit?
...
Oh wait, it didn't support that, did it? So instead we have to go back to making something awkward with bouncing ball movement?
...
Or rather just the timer...
Chris only semi-transparency, 3 Alterable Values per Object + Fixed, 32 flags. 16 Global Variables + Life and Score... No Strings global or object wise. 252 AO limit. (not 256 lol).
It seems many people, myself included, are a little confused...
Are the rules "You may use whichever Clickteam product you please, but you CANNOT use any objects, actions, conditions or other features not possible in the original TGF1", or... are they simply as Hagar specified in his opening post and anything he didn't cover like alterable strings, global strings, object qualifiers and editing semi-transparency during runtime are all fair game?
Believe me, I really am "trying not to worry too much about exactly meeting every single one of TGF's more obscure limitations, and to make a great fun game for fun" but time is precious and it would be nice to know whether spending hours on various work arounds is actually necessary.
A 1.6% error in AO's is not worth fretting about Fano lol. Plus if you want to be really picky about it I just measured 261 hence your quoted number exhibits a greater error than I made to start with .
The more you stick to TGF's limitations the better. As SMR said "Use whatever tool you wish, but imagine you were making one with TGF".
For the record I have TGF open here:
* No global strings, no editing transparency at run time, no alterable strings. There is also the and, or, xor and inversion ink effects.
* Object Qualifiers do exist in TGF though.
* 16 global values
* 3 Alterable values.
* Object flags exist but there is no specifier on the number. Assume 32 as Fano mentions.
* Global event groups do exist
Try your best to stick to the TGF restrictions but do not worry about it so much, you will have to do something reasonably blase to get disqualified
What about list object? There's no such in TGF 1, but lists are present in MMF2. I need an array if I'm about to create RPG game ^^'.
If not...what about simple string operations - https://dl.dropbox.com/u/49372314/Screenshots/string.png ?

Thanks for somebody finally saying this Phredreeke! Please guys, let's just have fu. The judges are being very relaxed about the rules. I've honestly seen more complaints about all these small rules than if they were to say something, "Alright, only use one frame!"
All I can say just try to get back to old days of when we made games just to have fun, back when we didn't make stuff for other people but for us to play and have fun. I won't be competing because I've got something in the works for the 64 Digits RPG competition, but good luck to everyone competing!
I think it's fine to discuss what features are missing in TGF1 since most people have forgotten or simply never used it. An unspecified amount of leniency means someone might think their submission is within the rules but might get disqualified come judging time!
i used to rotate stuff using the picture object in the old days, and keep many directions.. but couldn't we just allow rotation?.. please? hehe... i got something going and it would really simplify things.
Wiiman, seriously? You trying to be Mr Nice Guy or somethin'?
We are all working on games, every single day and for no other reason but the fun of it. We make trailers and websites, we stay up till sunrise tweaking minor and unnoticeable details, we spend countless hours perfecting single frames in sprites appearing only once in games we will never finish, and we know we will never finish them yet we constantly update our wives/girlfriends/brothers/dogs with our progress, they are disinterested at best, but we don't care, why?, cause we are having fun.
What I love about click products are the endless possibilities, and with HWA and the constant release of new extensions, shaders and exporters, the possibilities are... even more endless. Yes we remember when you couldn't do things, but now we can, and we wanna do them. Even TGF1 is a dangerous power to be held and with it, anything and everything imaginable is possible, yet the work-arounds for the restrictions imposed are unnecessarily time consuming and most of all, not fun.
Why not just make a game anyway? Do whatever makes it fun for you. Even in the worst case where it isn't eligible for winning a prize, at the end of the competition, you'll still have something cool to show for it- the game itself. Just like the 'prize' at the end of the Ludum Dare is the result of all the hard work you've put in- your creation itself.

I am fairly sure that the transparency ink effect is still available for use with the TGF1 toolset; it was mentioned somewhere.
"* Try to be efficient with alterable values as possible. No one is going to be strict about this, but try to keep in the spirit of TGF era game making."
I have game vars that exceed 16 globals and 3 per active. What is the leeway here? I can always make a whole bunch of actives with 3 variables each to be used as game vars but this seems extremely unnecessary. How about 8 per active and 32 globals? Is this reasonable?
Destruction Carnival? That was made with KNP and it's still a hard act to follow. Basically, you don't need an orchestra to make good music - you just have to take a different approach.

Not to single out SolarB, but I think a fresh approach is the next best step, not attempting to create exceptions to the rules.
I am happy to see people considering how good Destruction Carnival is, yet it is made in KNP
Do not worry about what your doing SolarB.
In regard to some questions asked:
* We have decided on a 50 megabyte limit - this should be plenty!
* Only one entry per competitor
* As prizes will be going to individuals, it makes sense for people to take part on their own.

Any chance of making an exception for using sine and cosine? Pretty sure I used those with TGF in some way.

@SolarB: well, hagar clarified that as long as you don't go overboard, a few extra Alterable Values here and there would be acceptable. We'll only need to review the source code/Events List if things are seriously far beyond the typical capabilities of TGF2.
I think his exact words were "don't worry about what you're doing, SolarB."
Well, I just remade something to only include 3 alterable values. I guess I don't really need to have done that?
Heh, having said that I do kind of need a 4th
You know what... I've decided that to save myself a bucket-load of trouble with trying to remember what I can and cannot do, I'm going to crack out my old Games Factory CD and re-install it, just for this comp.
Thanks s-m-r. I read only first post, my fault.
Can I use ogg format(Ogg is smaller than wav)? Tgf don't support it. I have huge library of my sounds and ogg resolve my problem.
I have started working on my entry and need some clarification on a few things please. Sorry if these things have been answered earlier in the forum posts but i am on my way out and wanted to post this before i went.
1. can i use If/or (if not how would i go about doing this using code)
2. can i use semi transparency (can't remember if TGF could do this)
3. i assume as code isn't being checked groups can be used (unless TGF used them anyway)
4. Variables can be renamed
5. did TGF use flags? If so i can get around my if/or issue that way
As soon as i have done a bit more work on my entry i'll post a project page.
Edited as Q's 1, 2 and 5 have been answered previously.

Awesome .
Looking good Andy and Akai .
Renaming AV's is fine. Does make things easier on the brain...
I am actually going to make a game in TGF just for fun (not fair for a judge to enter is it really ), I started on some graphics last night.
Game will hopefully be like the Bonanza Bros, but the Hagar Bros. The summer is approaching and a barrage of environmentalists have taken over numerous establishments, smoking herbal supplements and listening to hippy music.
This stops the good folk of the town from getting there summer groceries (ice creams, pork pies et al). So the Hagar Bros are called in to deal with them. After experimentation it is found that boom boxes playing "Slayer" can be used as hippy grenades and compressed air propelled rubber bullets momentarily stun them.
I am also pondering a trap (think ghostbusters) where a lid opens revealing a selection of humous and cous cous based salads. The hippies will gravitate towards this vegetarian friendly food source only to be trapped by a pair of hand cuffs!

Now there's a hilarious plot, if I ever saw one.
Had some questions of my own though.
Is there any rules against cursewords and things of that immature nature? I like me some o' dat profanity.
Also, I see Draq also asked this but don't see a answer to it, but can you have .ogg files in it? Wouldn't want midis or mp3s piling up towards the size limit, how unlikely it might be.
EDIT: Since it's prefered the submissions are soloprojects I was wondering if it was okay if another guy than the coder could make the music? Since we're all coders here and not everyone(Specially me) don't know how to make music.
When I 've got tgf from Computer magazine, I needed 2 day to find level editor. No internet and tutorials and minimum 200mb of game weight- this is tgf spirit for me... . I've make music always in wav(not mid), but this format is uncompressed. Ogg make it possible to me to keep the tgf spirit, when i create over 100MB music library to my game.
Sorry gents, been very busy lately setting up a company as a spinout from my research. Time is more on my sides now .
@ Deaval : Try to keep it clean (nothing adult), butvimmaturity is ok - like farting and stuff (I still find fart jokes hilarious).
If your music guy does not mind the possibility of you getting a prize and he does not - go for it. It's recommended as the prize(s) will go to singular winners.
I think it's best to stick to midi for now, as some people may already have done/aquired such music.
Eduardin: as Andy says, upload it somewhere, submit it as a download and let me know .
Midi is what should be used. One person I have had contact me has already had some music made or brought it. I am more interested in people finishing games than fretting about every particular aspect of tgf.
As i keep re-iterating the rules will not be enforced with an iron fist. I may give a small percentage of the presentation marks (say 10% total) to TGF spirit.
I did install TGF to remind myself of what was missing. Or rather what MMF 1.5 and 2 added. But it's been so long since i used it it felt all weird. I just feel more comfortable using MMF2 now.
Oh also Ive thrown in code from other MMF2 stuff ive got lying around.
I hope using midis from final fantasy games doesn't get a game an authenticity bonus over someone who made their own music. I think that would be an injustice.
I also installed TGF but it felt a bit wierd... And I've already made alot of progress in mmf. Changing code/programs/whatever is the best way to kill a project!
Andy, if anything, that should grant you an authenticity bonus! (EDIT, read that wrong)...

I'd prefer you include both in the download, as the judges and I may want to see the assets of the game in addition to playing it. Some of the criteria for judging are related to media files and coding.

So, if possible please include the source.
Ok, but can I have the source in a separate download? I just would prefer not to post it with the download, since it would make it about twice as big for anyone who just wanted to play it and wasn't judging.
If you put a million monkeys at a million keyboards, one of them will eventually write a Java program.
The rest of them will write Perl programs.
If you are worried about distributing sources, please PM me with the link when you submit your entry. I seriously doubt the source will be looked at unless a fairly serious breach of "TGFness" has been made.
@Andy: Any attempt at custom home made quality music will be rewarded.
At moment the judges are me and SMR - but there maybe some more TDC admins joining...
I am sorry to say this but my Laptop has just decided to die and as such has rendered my chance of submitting my game in time none existent.
I will still complete it though as soon as I can get it back up and running. I'll try and get it going again later but i'm too cheesed off to try now. Apologies, especially to my artist as they have worked hard on getting the graphics done for me.

Everything is going well, thanks. My girlfriend and I are packing up to move eight hours away at the end of September. We're excited about starting our new life in Nashville, Tennessee.
Meanwhile...We all have day jobs and/or other commitments, and quite possibly family obligations as well. We're doing our best to fit judging in during our free time. Please be patient.
I'm sure the competition would be somewhat farcial if we just quickly played each game and gave it a quick score to appease those who want their results as quickly as possible.
You guys have put the effort in with the game making, now we're putting the effort in with the judging, and naturally juggling this between other commitments is time consuming. So basically... what SMR said.
I'm wondering if it's too soon to start a new small competition? Could always pass the time whilst THIS competition is being judged lol.
Ive had an idea that I feel is quite interesting but not sure if others will feel the same.
A new console/computer wars competition only everyone defines their own limitations within a range.
or something i was messing about with recently, how it would be interesting if games that didn't get released on a certain console were converted. It could be a game released on what would be then a dead format (Final fantasy 7 on a Zx spectrum) or just a game that wasn't actually released on something (Sonic the hedgehog on an Atari st).
I did a mock up of Alex kidd in miracle world as it would look on an Amstrad cpc.
