No, but it's pretty easy to tell if you are/aren't using a grid. But no, the grid doesn't need to be visible.

What if the only purpose the grid has is how your charactor moves? Does the game necessarily have to revolve around the use of the grid?

No you can't make a game with an engine similar to Pokémon? Or is that just classed as Tiles or something?

One of his examples was "Classic Console Styled RPG", so what do you think? As long as there's some kind of grid or tile movement involved, it's ok.

pokemon uses a grid system, you are bound by a grid movement thus it is a grid system
