The new slim model does reduce the "RROD" issue from previous models - it has better cooling and a system in which the console shuts down if it gets too hot. The issue isn't 100% gone - it's impossible to completely eradicate the problem (some PS3s and Wiis have been known to overheat too).
Basically, the chances of the slim model getting "RROD" have been reduced significantly. That still won't persuade me to buy one though
This is a signature. Have this one on me.

As long as your reasoning is other than "They break", then its a matter of preference and thats fine. It's just irritating to see people slander their opinion as fact and also people who insist that their half supported exaggerated ideas are facts.

A lot of MS and Sony fan boys on here. I had problems with my PS1 (lasers/CD clip breaking), PS2 (power supplies) and thus refused to buy another Sony console. My Xbox has been fine, only person I did know who had a RROD kept it in a very confined cupboard thingy under the tv.
Bring back the days of quality consoles... my NES, SNES, N64, Master System and Megadrive still work fine. The nes carts need a clean sometimes thats it. My newly aquired Atari 2600 6 switcher is also touchwood fine and built like a tank.

Ive never had any problems with any of my consoles ever. Even our Amstrad cpc home micro we bought in 1988 or something works fine to this day. Our Pcs usually break after about 3 to 4 years though. Still, having problems with a PC wouldn't make me rush out and buy a Mac.

Lol my "Mac temptation" was mainly for logic... I have not brought one and my PC is fine . Might just buy a copy of Cakewalk Sonar and a Soundblaster X-fi.
All my consoles are fine apart from my PS1 and PS2, which sit under my bed gathering dust in the hope that one day I will be bothered to fix them. My Sony HiFi aslo broke - I did not even bother looking at that, it went in the tip. I now have seperates and I am never going back to an integrated "Hi-Fi".
Even my Dragon 32 and Cassettes still work - which my Dad brought in 85 I think, and I got it when my dad got the IBM XT.

Sorry, it had to be said. I mean no disrespect to you, but support your claims if you're going to try to deface a console.
First off, bravo for assuming I don't have a Slim. Assumptions don't make you look foolish or anything.
(Also, @hagar: I'm a 360 owner myself, and I don't have a PS3. Haven't had any hardware issues with it either. Mines been going strong since 2005. Just mentioning it in case you were assuming I'm a Sony fanboy, which doesn't make a lick of sense; Bashing the 360 doesn't necessarily mean Sony fanboy! They could be PC gamers or Nintendo fanboys.)
The new Slim has the GPU and CPU on the same chip and a new larger fan is on the heatsink. Well, the fan is blowing air away from the heatsink. There needs to be a fan blowing air into the unit to replace the air that's blown out for efficiency, and the Slim doesn't have one. The fan is also pushing air 90° away from where the vent holes are, meaning the entire heatsink isn't getting cooled with what little air the fan can suck in. This inefficient cooling leads to heat build-up. (Also, the fan might be quieter because of it's bearing. Sleeve bearings are generally quieter than ball bearings, but tend to have a much shorter life expectancy!)
Heat build-up is no big deal though. The Slim doesn't have a red ring to display anything anymore. Like I said before, its treating the symptom (RRoD) without curing the disease (overheating). Have no fear, because instead it displays a red dot! The dot, and the fail-safe, doesn't exist so Microsoft could err on the side of caution. It exists because the unit will still overheat; When, not if.
And then sometimes the fail-safe goes overboard. In this video, the unit is said to have overheated after an hour of play the night before, and doesn't turn back on. The unit has to be replaced. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ou8qyWGwZJg
You can find a trove of more videos on Youtube, and reports from searching on Google. The Slim still has heating problems, and it still affects the hardware. The disease has not been cured.

that's too bad. Especially since it seems like something that could be solved real extra manufacturing costs since all that's needed is side vents for the cool air to come in.

Actually, my modified 360 has one PC fan on top blowing cool air in, and two PC fans at the back sucking hot air out. The original fans have been completely removed.
BUT THAT'S NOT THE POINT.
@ aphant:
The fan is not quieter because of it's bearings, but simply because it is larger and henceforth doesn't have to spin faster.
While you bring valid points to the table, you're still saying "OMGZ EVERY 360 CONSOLE IS GOING TO RROD" and that (further) hurts the 360's rep. A GPU no longer trapped under a disc drive and a fan far closer to both GPU and CPU are points you're ignoring for one small issue: not enough cool air getting in.
Then by posting one video and saying that there are "many others" on youtube and reports on Google, you're IMPLYING that it is happening to everyone, when in fact it is not.
In short, you're making a lot out of very little. Haha, kind of like what the media likes to do: THE SWINE FLU IS A EPIDEMIC IT WILL KILL EVERYONE!

We don't give a shit about the 360's reputation. Everyone knows it has the RROD, people buy them anyway because of its overhyped, sorry I meant superior online service.

Where did I say every new console is going to break? Oh that's right, I didn't. I'm not implying that the problem is happening for everyone, either. I'm saying (and showing) that the problem is still there, and it's not just a single oddball case of one unit out of millions that's defective. Hundreds of units are having issues. If there was a widespread problem, THEN THERE WOULD HAVE BEEN MASS RECALLS. No mass recall, not a widespread problem. But the problem IS still there, it's just being covered up better by removing the ring of light and having the overheat fail-safe. (And the fail-safe exists so that Microsoft can save money on repairing units!)
Speaking of repairs, the new S only has a one year warranty for General Hardware Failures: "Warranty Period" for Xbox 360 S, means 1 year from the date You purchased the Xbox 360 S from an authorized retailer; from https://support.xbox.com/support/en/us/nxe/hardware/warranty/warranty/ProductWarranty360s.aspx
We'll have to wait and see if the warranty period is extended to three years, like the warranty for the old model was.
It really doesn't matter if the GPU has been moved away from the disc drive or not. Just like a computer, air needs to circulate through the unit to keep it cool. Get air circulating under the disc drive (old models, of course) and it'll help. Get some cool air blowing into the unit (new model) and it'll help.
And yes, the type of bearing in the fan has an impact on the noise. A sleeve (or plane) bearing will typically be quieter than ball bearings, but ball bearings will last about 3 times longer than a sleeve bearing. I'd imagine that sleeve bearings are much cheaper to produce, too.
